Featured Replies

Brakes: G40 fronts, vented.

Wheels and Tyres: Smoor Roadsters 13x7 all round, yokos 175/50/13

Interior Styling: Brown and beige striped interior, rev counter mounted in dash

ICE and Security: No speakers on show, Sony Bluetooth CD player.

Comments: New to club polo so this is almost a summary... so far. Owned the car for a little while now as I bought it of a mate, and all the above other than the engine change was completed since I've owned it. It was bought to be a running project I would slowly work on whilst using it for commuting to college. I'm now at uni, and manage to get home to do the odd job on the car and hope to get it back on the road this side of the new year (:

Future Plans: Full exhaust system, upswept back box, tidy up the outside, full respray in original colour, possibly whole new interior but still keeping to brown and beige theme.

This is how she sat, now long before I bought her back in 2011. Previously been lowered, however only on springs.

To start i wanted to clean the car up, sprayed the wheels black for tidiness and this was when I purchased the weber. This was the first problem I came across, the car was running (only just) with a 'pooburg' carb and this brought with it all the known problems such as stalling, bad idle and so on.
So a weber was the only way forward and the cars ran lovely since (:

I then bought a donor car with lots of goodies (: The photo is just after I fitted the new suspension all round. The white mk3 had not seen the road since the previous owner had fitted all new polybushes, suspension, race clutch and lightened flywheel, so this was all transferred. Along with the 5 speed gearbox and arbs.

I ran the car for all of one week with the suspension adjusted to its lowest as seen below.

Then this.

Had to raise the car for practical reasons (2011) however I prefered the more level look rather than the reverse rake. Also got a desmo roof rack. And tinted lights yellow.

A little while passed, then decided wanted a change, this was this summer, as the car went off the road, so out came the paint stripper for the bonnet, and off came the arches. The sanded spots on the bonnet were from when my mate flatted back the bonnet previously to paint it black.

This is since I've been at uni, too far away to tinker at the weekend, however when I'm home I can (: Hopefully back to the road in a few weeks, as still MOT'd aswell (:

  • I have heard quite a few people mentioning the b reg, or early year mk2s are getting slightly rarer. After some thought, it definitely wouldn't be right to break this car. Found a few bora's I want

Had a feeling you would make a thread :p saweeeetttt!

Glad this found it's way onto here :-). The Mars Red Coupes are rare beasts!

Looks very smart on the Smoors 8-).

Thanks, they're the most recent addition after a long time searching for wheels.

Plan to have it on the road begining of next month, few tasks when i visit home from uni:

Front pas wheel bearing was on its way out before it went off the road, replace both.

Service the car, start fresh. (:

Exhaust blow and issues... The bend in the pipe leading to the backbox hangs really low, I've twisted and adjusted this as much as possible before just to get it hanging higher but still scrapes :/

is there anything i could do?

its already on really tight short rubber hangers, if not I'm getting a quote in the next week for custom pipe and backbox with small angled off centre upsweep. any suggestions? (:

looks sweet as! dont see too many nice mk2's on here really

Hey Guys, I haven't been on here for a long while, but it has come to the time where I am going to move on from the polo as i am 21 soon and can insure lots of other cars i have always wanted.

I really need some help and advice from you guys in whether to break or sell my car as whole.

Model: Mk2 Polo Coupe Mars Red 1985 Milege reads around 70000? MOT AND TAX MAY 2014 but I will have to check as I am at uni away from the car.

Bodywork: The car is structurally sound, really clean engine bay with white sprayed rocker cover, (new gasket was fitted when removed to spray), the paint is not the prettiest in appearance but it sure adds character and this doesnt take away from the fact people do love to look at the car and always comment positively, it is a 28 year old car. the previous owner sprayed the bonnet matt black so this is now rattle canned red, front passenger wing is primer grey, and the passenger side door has slight different colour blown into it, and odd dents here and there but nothing major. Rust wise again it is great, my friend always comments on how it has so much less rust than any other vw he has owned. The front and rear valances on the corners show rust, a common place but it appears to still be solid. Being at uni i cant put as much love into it as i wish, however it wouldnt take much atall to address these points, or just love the car for what it is. Like many people do.

Any parts that have needed replacing have been done so straight away e.g. the fuel tank (was new summer 2011)

Engine: Formally 1.0 4 speed, now 1.3 with 4 speed box. still registered as 1.0 so would be up to new owner, Lightened flywheel, race clutch, manual choke weber carburettor and k&n. The 5 speed was high mileage and started to make noises to I changed back to a 4 speed box.

The engine change was done before I owned it but I have since added the clutch, carb, and flywheel.

I have recently spent a lot of money to have a custom powerflow up swept exhaust made, this is a full system with the smallest centre box to reduce scraping. It goes all the way to the original manifold including downpipe. Nice little raspy tone nothing too noisy. (May 2013)

Suspension: Lowering Springs and shocks, Adjustable rears. Poly-bushed front end. Doesn't scrub on the wheels, occasional scrape as car is low. But can be raised.

Wheels and Tyres: Smoor Roadsters 13x7 all round, yokos 175/50/13 plenty of life on the fronts, and excellent tread on the rears, could be switched when fronts run lower/

Exterior Styling: Mk3 Golf Splitter, arches and sill covers removed, quad grill yellow tint film, Webasto open air roof, desmo roof rack which i have now added wooden slats to. Black paint around rear window.

Interior Styling: Brown and beige stripey interior matching door cards, brown carpet and parcel shelf, wolfsburg steering wheel, 8ball gear knob, rev counter mounted in dash

I have serviced the car myself since I owned it. I also have the original arch trims and sill covers which i took off, but no front valance plastic.

Now here is the issue that i would like advice with:

I can either sell the car as whole, or part it out, however being at uni in sheffield and the car is at home in suffolk this isnt the easiest option.

The car was a Cat C write off when my friend purchased it, it had all the relevant work to make it road worthy again and has been VIC checked.

Since I have owned the car it has passed 3 or 4 mots without issue

What price would you put on the car as whole, or whats it worth to break?

This car is a great 1st car, or even 1st dub for any enthusiast

these are the most recent photos of the car, and the exhaust pictured.

I hardly do many miles due to my situation but it easily took me my girlfriend and a loaded car up to Sheffield without any problems. However is mainly a great town car

(car from behind in Sheffield showing primer wing, but before exhaust fitted)

don't you dare scrap the shell, they are way too rare!

If your breaking i may be interested in some parts dude

Breaking a car is hard work and most of the time you get left with a load of shit no one wants and if your not at home it's going to be even harder.

The car seems sound has tax and mot, there's no reason it shouldn't sell.

You might make a bit more moneys breaking it but personally id rather cut my losses and send the car to a good home, knowing it will get looked after and someone will enjoy it.

As for price, just pick a number you would be happy with and go from there.

Thanks for the replies people (:

It is a strange situation, knowing I want to move on, but after owning it for a while deciding how to, haha. Also the location of uni etc.

I would rather it go to a good home then see it be stripped and torn apart after what has been put into it like you said lupoluke.

think ill have to decide what the honest number I put on it, true to the valuation of the car as is, not overvalue it being emotionally attached :L

If you can afford to buy a car with out selling this one and have room to store it keep it.

B plate polos tended to be well built. We had an old bread an and it was solid. Your car looks really nice difficult to value as its had an engine conversion. Did you keep the arch kit.

This is my cars brother! my plate starts B188, same color too :D

Oh I did see a 1ltr mars red coupe for sale over summer with the reg starting b188 around Essex, did you buy that one? Yeah I did keep the arch kit and sill covers, all but the front valance plastic. Still researching, but I wont be able to store this car if I choose to get another. Looking at getting a bora tdi or similar, putting my touch on it, but it would be a nice comfy car for motorway journeys between Sheffield and Suffolk.

Please don't break it! :( B reg are getting rare now! :/

I'd have the swept exhaust though! Where did you get it

I have heard quite a few people mentioning the b reg, or early year mk2s are getting slightly rarer.

After some thought, it definitely wouldn't be right to break this car.

Found a few bora's I want to go and look at, but this would be most the funding towards it, meaning this will be up for sale around first week of November, as I will be home from uni then.

  • 2 weeks later...

Let me buy the splitter pleaseeee!
