I have a HK head with 34/28.1 widening the inlet to 36.2

It's a GK head. I'm pretty sure it's the same as an HK- but for having a 292 camshaft (once upon a time).

And I might finally fit it. Been mending a GRP spoiler and saying, 'Hope it doesn't rain next weekend' for too long now.

I got me head done for £50 quid + what ever the valves cost about 6 quid each £80 in total.

I am still quite tempted by the Newman but was planning on using my GF camshaft. no point mapping my car twice though...... hmmmmm

The DBilas re-grinds are exchange and are a similar price to the newman 284.

I've heard Piper might do a suitable fast road cam my friend has one in his HK powered Mk2 Golf. not sure if they still make them?

The Schrick cams are the dogs danglers but the prices they fetch second hand on ebay.de is silly and a lot of them are silly profiles.

wont really matter as the valve angle will deflect the flow, better off aiming directly at the back of the valve and let the flute do the rest, filling downwards across a valve works better on turbo'd engines, also, massive charge area (silly big port area with small in and out) is useless on an aspirated engine, its aimed at turbo's as flow is irelevent with forced induction, aspirated you want everything working with the shape of the port/back of the valve.. the ford pre crossflow engines you speak of drop the valves almost completly virtically downwards.. for maximum power and most consistant recharge of a cylinder the port MUST point in the direction the valve moves... unless your trying to sacrifice hp for torque, in wich case the [port entry will want to be bigger than its exit (compresing in port tract)

I'm trying to reduce the angle of the port and make it as close to a downdraught head as possible. I've seen and helped out (slightly :lol: ) with this sort of work done on ford 105e engines, so I'm hoping to repeat it on a polo.

It'll work well.

I had a scrap AAU head I did this to, and was lucky enough to get it tested on a flow bench. I don't have the figures to hand but it was more airflow than I could get it to flow with the standard port arrangement, with a smaller diameter port aswell.

Only issue I could see is with this type of modification is weakening of the valve spring seat area, and having to relocate the manifold bolt holes.

Do these heads have chambers? Because you could pick up some flow by welding and reshaping the chamber if they're anything like the other VW heads I've seen.

I just spoken to ken at newman and he said they haven't done a cam for a early slipper follower head for three years.

he will try and dig some information out but the best he can do is re-grind an existing cam which I don't have.

Catcams have one buts its £400!!!!!!!!!!

So where have you guy got you camshafts from? and what is the part number etc.

Well that's stange, I've just looked at some emails from david at newman cams and he quoted me £150 plus VAT and delivery,

for a 272 camshaft, for a mechanical lifter head, he even quoted the rocker arm ratio of 1.5 so its obviously for the right head.

I think i might ring back tomorrow and ask for David.

Did the cam have a part number or reference.

Managed to talk to David and got the right answer 272 camshaft, for a mechanical lifter head and made sure it had the right connection for the dizzy.

Ordering one when I get paid and when my shiny new pully comes back.

In the upcoming months I'll be selling my ported and flowed 1.3 GF head (only selling as I'm doing a 1.4 16v AFH conversion). the work has been done by JMRacing, with 3 angled cut valves (std size) with new valve guides (short so flow well) and stem seals. all in all its done about 3000 miles on a VW GF cam since installed.
