A guy I work with just put a bike engine in his, much more exciting. Especially 6 speed reverse

it is probably worth noting the pedals are very much to the right, looks ridiculous but feels fine as long as you aren't the sort of person who just sits on the clutch for ages in traffic. with regards to people fitment its all in the seating position. I'm 5ft9 and I'm about two inches from the roof because I sit forward and upright (bad back from the crash that wrote off my polo) but you can adjust the seat just so to fit. It's nice having a central armrest too but the cupholders in a mk2 are shit, but then again this isn't about cupholders. on the gay argument, the first person I knew to buy a 5 was a homosexual man but he does have the most manly one out of my mates who have 5's and is the aforementioned Miata turbo as seen below. or at least it is till you pop the bonnet and see everything is pink (rocker cover, manifold boost hoses etc.)

Similar money and performance. Probably more involving to drive, more likely to want to spit you off the road anyway. Manlier. Mechanically, possibly even more reliable.

That Midget looks a right laugh, i've always wondered if they're as much fun as they look.

It was a lot of fun, it was the same sort of basic, fun yet scary sort of driving experience you get from a mildly tuned classic mini. Different driving characteristics ect but the same "by the skin of your pants" kind of thrill, never quite knowing if its gonna kill you or not

Was great in the summer but I think you'd need to be pretty hardcore to use one as a daily through the winter

I used to be well into minis, you wouldn't believe how many problems you can fit into such a small thing though. I worked on many although i only actually owned two myself, countless mates had them, they were forever needing work (and money). A mate has one, final edition with front-mounted rad, seems fairly reliable. Still, whilst i'd love another i don't have the spare time these days!

Not sure how good the heater was as it was summer when we were pissing about in that so never needed them, but I would imagine it to be very drafty and not very pleasant in very cold weather, wind chill factor and all that. Bet it would be hilarious to drive in the wet tho

The roof of my old 306 cabrio was bad enough and it was in good nick, the hardtop for Midgets must be like gold dust.. There's a nice black 1500 on eBay but the picture with the relatively tidy hood up, you can see a gap between the window and the hood!

I see the hardtop on the white kiwi MX5 above has a rear spoiler above the window, never seen one before, some fabric roofs have one big enough to diffuse (Saab 900 I'm sure does). Must be effective for a subtle one to be engineered into a fabric roof.

I personally love them, I always stayed away from them with all the gay crap that comes with them, and they always fetched big money few years ago!

But then after taking up drifting few years ago, and seeing guys roll up in there 5s with tyres strapped to them, Drifting all day not using loads of fuel, no servicing then just driving home, they seemed awesome!

So last year I went and bought a mk1 eunos vr model, they come with 140bhp low ratio Torsten diff, and all uprated lowered bilstien shocks and loads of under bracing all standard!

Paid less than a grand for it in amazing condition, with full service history,

Drove it home about 100 miles and it used more fuel than my 328 drift car about 25mpg but this wasn't helped with the low ratio diff

But fun factor was frigging amazing, so predictable, felt quick, stopped awesome, really twitchy, but felt bit nervous overtaking lorrys on motorway as you sit so low,

But then drift events it really came alive, leave the start line screw it to the limiter through the gears and it didn't miss a beat, all temps stayed fine, and still averaged over 20mpg witch it nuts

But saying all this, using it daily (6ft) it does gring you down a bit, you feel like your in a yoga session just getting in it!

Then go shopping and struggle to get more than two food bags in the boot, nightmare to get a bike rack to fit, and my skateboard would only fit with the roof down.

If I could swap my afh breads for another similar model I would but it would become a weekend warrior

Guy, you certainly don't come across as objective on your assessment of Mx5's. It appears to be the hype and community thing that has tainted your impression of these cars more than the cars abilities themselves.

It was he'll of a laugh mate:-) only sold it to fund a big holiday round California, the plans were wider minilites and more Manly NATO green instead of the pearl green, but still the best cheap out of the box car for drifting fun I've had that can be used daily! Below is in 3rd on the limiter, it certainly keeps you on your toes
