Rules for SORN

This may have already been covered but if you buy a vehicle that is already SORN'd and you plan on keeping it SORN'd you need to re-SORN it as soon as you get it.

The best way to do this is to print off and fill in a V890 form off the DVLA website, don't wait for the V5 to come in the post so you can do it on-line. Do it straight away.

What's also a good idea to do is a vehicle data check before you buy the car to see if the car's current SORN is still valid. If it is about to run out, or just has. You should get the current owner to sort it out! You can give them the V890 to post along with the V5. This seems to be the preferred way to do it (rather than separate)

Following these steps should stop you getting fined. The fine is currently £80 plus any back tax.

I had been doing i all wrong. I knew that when the ownership of the car is changed the SORN needs to be re-applied for. In the past I have been waiting for the V5 and using the number on the front to declare the sorn. Which has been fine up to now. The DVLA is a bit slow in updating it's records so a few weeks isn't normally an issue.

What makes my situation worse is that the SORN had run out before I bought the car, about 3 weeks before and the V5 has taken two months to get here!
