basically i want to replace the old tired things with something a little newer, I'm a bit clueless when it comes to audi equipment and i was wondering if anybody could simply tell me the size speaker i need to get please

6x4 speakers is what you need...also has a space for a single in the dash

iv decided I'm going to remove and adapt the center console to hold speakers right at the back out of sight so thats not a problem just yet

as my headunit can only handle 4 x 40w

Its not a case of "cant handle" you can wire 400w speakers up but you'll only get 40w output.

I have these in the back of my breadvan, in the original speaker locations, I just put nuts onto the plastic rods, creating threads on them and hence holding the speakers up.

I'be got some JBL GTO 6429 in the back of mine... find they are ok for small speakers.

i haven't had chance to look at how the speakers fit back there yet, didnt realise they didnt have nut n bolts for securing anyway

You dont have to, not sure how you would do it otherwise, but basically they have 4 pegs which stick downwards, I just put a similar sized nut on each of the pegs and it cut threads into it.

The pegs are plastic

I've got some boxed Pioneer TS-874 for a long dead Mk2 Golf in the front. I'd hope VW would share such components.

Looks like pair of 8cm (or cut dash for 10cm). So I reckon the 8.7cm Pioneers I had in front of my Golf would fit.
