1.3 polo coupe s project

Featured Replies

hey, things first my names Sam,new to the forum so hello everyone :) just brought myself a mk2 polo after wanting and vw for a long time. its my first car so forgive me if I'm not very clued up. but I have lots of plans and and would be great to get some helpful advise and feedback along the way. here is a little spec list for now with a pic and some plans I have for the car.

spec

mk2 polo coupe s 1.3

ported and polished gt head

gt cam

yzf600 bike carbs

stainless four to one manifold

facet electric fuel pump

80mm lowing springs

bmw bbs wheels

The guy I brought the car from, sorry if you read this but had no idea what he was doing and half the engine bay way bodged together with cable ties.. with a leaky fuel pump mounted by a cable tie under the manifold. so thanks for almost having me up in flames. the bodywork itself is in pretty good nick with some small patches of surface rust and some lacquer peel on the roof. the carbs need setting up properly wich I may need some help with guys? and there is a small knock to the front bumper, inside is almost mint.

wheels need a refurb any ideas on colours I'm thinking a deep purple with a polished lip?

Like it a lot! Saw the build thread on here before, can't for the life of me remember who's it was.

On the subject of wheel colour I think the silver looks awesome

Lovely car their

You must keep the orange!

silver and orange mhhhmmm!!

Or wrap them so you can change the colour!

The orange is in really bad condition and one wheel somebody has tired to strip already. Could always redo then orange but haven't had many good comments about the wheel colour lol. Had to cut the exhuast today as it didn't for properly with the new manifold all good now :) need clear garage out so it can be put in there and I can start work on the engine bay.

Or wrap them so you can change the colour!

That would take ages surely compared to just spraying them?

Nice first car, i have had a standard coupe s before, didn't want to modify it so now have a Polo C breadvan to modify to my hearts content.

Here is a better picture of the wheels after a long day flattening the orange paint (half of it fell of when I hosed them down) and degreasing with earbuds! still not sure what colour the centres are going but the edge will definitely be polished

would help if I posted the picture... :disgust:

Little update on the progress of the car, it's now stored in a garage jacked up and on ramps bonnet of so I can set to work on the engine bay, the fuel pump has been rerouted to a safer place for now untill I find the best place to mount it when the bay is done. Ordered all new hoses pipes so on. Need a new throttle cable as the old was held on with a... cable tie.. No prizes for guessing that one. Tryed to pull out as much of the dent in the front as I could. Got a nasty surprise when I took the rocker cover of and it was full of yellow crap! But diped my finger in the oil and it was a nice black? I was told the at recently had a new head so I'm hoping the crap is from the old head and the person was just lazy and didn't clean out the rocker cover. Wheels are still at the sandblasters and will be primed and ready for paint on Friday. That's about all I can think of for now sorry there's no pics phone died on me

I don't have a rocker cover breather on mine, so can't help you with that one, but as far as I know, you're right to point it at the catch tank. I'd be inclined to run two hoses - one from the crank case breather straight to the catch tank, and one from the rocker cover breather straight to the catch tank - rather than using a T-piece because you'd have a straighter/cleaner/easier path for the oil fumes to follow - but that's probably just my OCD...

Mine's set up to route straight from the crank case breather to the oil catch tank. The catch tank itself should have a filter on it, so no need to have one anywhere else in the setup.

From your diagram I'm guessing you still have the original VW hose on the crank case breather, which splits in to two pipes - one big and one small. The big one goes to a big canister - the name of which escapes me, but you don't need it for your setup. Just bin the split pipe and run a straight pipe all the way to the catch tank.

Hope that helps?

Also where does "under car" go? As far as I know all you need is a filter on the catch tank.

little update on the car, finally got it running http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPl3fiQdb8w been working away under the bonnet fixing or replacing all the wrongs of wich there was to many to list. water hasn't been circulating properly so had no chance to drive it still :( took the thermostat out today as it was shot. also this isn't helping...

think I read this went to the old carb what should I do with it?

I also made a nipple for the advance

I'm still waiting on my wheels and some more goodies I have on there way..

this is what I have

so what you are saying is loose the bottle and block of the large pipe and run the smaller pipe straight to the catch can? somebody else told me this but I was worried it may cause to much pressure? also the reason for the t-piece is because the catch can only has 2 inlets so one will be the rocker and crank breather t pieced into it the other will be a pipe run (under the car) to let any extra fumes escape

Ideally you want a nipple on each of those runners boss otherwise you'll get pulses of vacuum resulting in erratic timing. I'm not sure how much this will effect the drivability, but it means you'll have advance at intervals, rather at all times when needed. Isn't the most efficient method

yeah I had a feeling I would, eventually once the car is running decent enough and it comes to setting up the carbs I want to get a new manifold mad up with nipples on them

you need a nipple on each runner of the manifold t pieced together to use the advance properly.

if not just dont use it and set your timing a bit higher, say 10 degrees ish.

dont worry about that coolant hose, wont do shit to your cooling system.

the small pipe on that oil breather should normally go to the rocker cover. on mine i instead just have a straight pipe then the filter, then a straight pipe at the top of it to another filter.

carbs sound like there either way out of balance or one isnt operating correctly. check for air leaks - spray WD40 around all the manifold/carb joins and if the revs pick up you have a vaccum leak you need to sort.

nice looking coupe s :)

Just block them hoses of then so they look abit neater? Hopefully it was just the thermostat messing it of then. Yeah the carbs are well out but atleast it's running now. Dumptank is already paid for now anyway plus will look pretty cool so ill just put it on anyway cheers mate

you can block them off or just leave as it is, makes no difference really just looks.

fair enough just run a pipe to that filter then a pipe from that to your catch tank then.

if you dont have the breather on the cam cover it does make these engines breathe a little heavy but not a problem with a tank
