MK2/3 Petrol tank breather pipe inside rear quarter RUSTTTTTT

Featured Replies

Ok the sun is out so have just been having a really good look at my mk3 bready gt and have found the metal pipe inside the rear qaurter which carries a large breather pipe from the filler neck to the top of the petrol tank is rotted out at the bottom. Reached inside and had moist crumbled metal/rust in my hand. My old mk2 had the same problem which nackered the sill and around the hole for the pipe in the arch.

I have checked those areas and they seem very solid still. Just wondering whats the best way to fix this and possibly prevent it happening again? Seems to be what kills allot of 86c polos :crybaby:

Mine is exactly the same, discovered it by accident and wondered what the hell it was - you've answered it though.

I thought it would be okay to just leave it? Total bastard to get to

The problem is the water this lets in only has one place to go, into your sills

personally if its alread crumbiling away then I would try and get rid of all the rust. ANd the replacing the pipe in some way. Total pain of a job to do but it will save you pain in the long run.

Just found this myself too :(

Does anyone have a diagram showing where this pipe goes to once in the car?

I was thinking the same as @derskine about removing the internal pipe if possible ?

I've crumbled the pipe hoovered it out fully waxoiled in the quarters and por15 whats left of the pipe at each end.

You can cut it out and replace with a large rubber hose, or weld a new pipe in, re routing the breather would be cool if that was possible.
