Mikey i think I'm winning then. This will be the 6th engine conversion in a year. Lol

David, unfortunately they all have to have an ugly yellow frontend by law haha! But yes, its is railway yellow on the block :p

we didnt hone it as such, just deglazed the bores.

The guy that helped me do it is a pretty experienced car mechanic, used to build race engines ect and he was pretty confident itl do the job.

Cheers!!

my bores are pretty much the same as yours Eric, mine was done by a long running mini specialists who have built engines weekly for decades

Thats good to know guy. Nice one!!

I have to say the difference in the rings is crazy. The old ones are completely nackered. No idea how. Maybe it overheated or something?

Mikey - that is fucking class  you deserve a medal for that hahahaha

i dropped my scrapper rings down the bore and they didnt want to know .. Guess the spring of the ring goes after a while lol

started my inlet, got the runners cut to length, and i tacked the first one on, allowing me to heat it up and use a hammer and punch to match it to the port.

going to blank the injector holes on this one rather than shaping the runners int them.

left to do :

  • shape and weld on inlet runners
  • blank off injector holes on inlet manifold
  • replace conrod bolts with new items
  • shorten oil pickup pipe to fit my spare mk2 sump
  • weld locating tab back onto crank pulley
  • fit modified pickup and mk2 sump
  • fit head with new headgasket and headbolts
  • fit cambelt and time up
  • finish yellow paint on cam cover
  • paint spare engine mount and fit
  • buy new stainless 4-1 manifold
  • fit into car

weld locating tap on to pully ?

How come ..

Avy should work fine ?

  • Author

Its somehow sheared off mate! Lol just needs like a lil nipple sorta thing.

got a crank pully spare somewhere..

Might actually be an avy too ..

Can have it after i built my engine mate ?

  • Author

Need it sorted quicker than that mate. Probs just fix it.

Cheers though

I can send you one out today, need to know if it's a pre-'99 or post-'99 crank fitting though (i presume it's an AVY crank which is obviously post-'99).

I had one slip and nip the locator off as the bolt was loose, torqued it up and ran it like that until the next build.

Thanks for the offer mikey its appreciated but ill have the gas welding stuff out today anyway to weld my oil pickup anyway :)

Yeah it'll take literally half a second to tap a nipple on there if you've already got the welder on. Just a case of that first arc sticking. I'm thinking warm the pulley up a bit first with a torch? You don't want the weld too wide, it'll be a bitch to trim, though you could always open up the hole In the aux pulley.

I'm worried about this failing..

Bigga baaaada boom..

Bits of valves firing out the exhaust like a machine gun, blasting holes in the front bumper of the car behind..

FFS Eric, just take the offer from mikey and do it properly. If the bodge fails that rebuilt engine will be beyond fucked. Is it really worth the risk for the sake of waiting a couple of days more to get it back together?

Is this the bit that drives the alternator pulley

Or the bit that fits into the actual crank key way

  • Author

mikey id be doing it with the oxy-acetaline gear, i can gas weld pretty well compared to arc.

guy for god sake, its a tiny little nipple on the crank pulley to help stop the alternator pulley from rotating. itd probably be fine without it I'm just doing it because i may aswell, whats the worst that could happen? the alternator pulley turns around?? oooh noooo!

anyway did a couple things today, didnt have much time though.

gas welded one of my inlet runners on fully, and filled the injector hole with weld. getting the shape with the weld pool was hard work!!

20130521_182529_zpsa67c4ac1.jpg

ground the weld back, looks sweet. bit of tidying up and itl do the trick!

20130521_182447_zps14080e83.jpg

also modified my oil pickup. cut an inch off of it to fit the earlier shallow sump. again gas welded it, was gonna braze it but its effort.

then gave my sump a quick paint and shoved it on to protect the bottom end while i wait for conrod bolts.

Aw, I think we all thought you were just welding another keyway onto the pulley - the one that stops the pulley slipping from the crank, not the nipple that holds the alternator pulley on.

In that case, it's fine.

It's a tiny nipple mind, I think it'd hold with just friction alone.

  • Author

nahh course not

i did use the word nipple earlier!! lol

Wouldn't bother tbh lol.

And you gonna mill your inlet mating face ?

Can I ask an unintelligent question?

Why cut the hole for the injector to just fill it back in again?

gonna finish the runners and see how bad it is. may file it flat if its not too bad.

File it flat?!

You gotta be kidding, right?

Generic eBay base plate.

Need to mill/surface grind
