Even though technically you can file flat and stuff, love those college assessments ha. But would take FOREVER

Wasn't sure, cheers for that, brer.

But back to Eric with his ability to file stuff optically flat with just his eyes.

Or bung the thing in a mill/lathe and take less than 30 seconds to do it..

Need a large lathe to do something that diameter lol.

Totally use a marking out/flat plate & DTI to check it; get the surface finish comparison plates out.

Maybe some engineers blue, lap it til it's flat?

Or don't grind the flat surface in the first place :ninja:

i can file flat. its not rocket science adam

Meh, so flat that air won't get past?

I'm aware its not rocket science, but as Nick said, it's got a large area.. I'm not convinced you can file that whole thing truely flat. Only saying that because I never ran a gasket, just a little instant gasket - as pikey as it is.

Worked though.

did it on the one i made last time! lol

Fuck filing that anyway, steel is effort.

What's wrong with instan gasket? Just use fuel/oil/lambda sensor safe stuff

guy  for god sake, its a tiny little nipple on the crank pulley to help stop the alternator pulley from rotating. itd probably be fine without it I'm just doing it because i may aswell, whats the worst that could happen? the alternator pulley turns around?? oooh noooo

serious question Eric, are you retarded?

What happens if the alt pulley spins? It spins the bottom pulley bolt too, loose bottom pulley bolt results in a loose bottom pulley which in tern results I a very fucked engine when that spins. That alt pulley is almost constantly being loaded in opposite directions as the load switches between the pulley driving the alt and the alt giving drag under deceleration, without that tab there how long until the load cracks the bolt loose?

This isn't internet folklore type shit, there is a very real chance of that happening if you bodge isn't good enough. Doms did exactly this but luckily it was being set up in the rollers at the time so they noticed before it killed the engine, if it had happened out on the road you wouldn't know until the valves were being raped by the pistons.

its also a problem on the AAZ engines but on those the drag from the alt actually wears the cut out for the bottom pulleys woodruff key until theres enough play for the bolt to work loose and its dead engine time.

but hay, you know best, after all what's the worst that could happen?...

Oil pump sprayed black, sump is back on for now after painting. Looking fresh!!

Now before i out it back in, I'm going to put the head on with the old headgasket and headbolts.

I'm gonna spin the engine over like that amd see if i get any oil sitting ontop of the pistons like last time.

If i dont happy days and ill bolt it all back together with fresh gasket and bolts and wack her in!

You sprayed the pump?

Oh dear

flakyyyyy...

Shouldnt need paint ric,

Not going to rust anyway as its always in oil lol

He must mean the pump itself.

Not the pick-up pipe.

Surely..

Even then it's in the engine isn't it, so one, unnecessary and two, a risk of flaking paint.

Unless, and I'm going to go with this one, he means the cover plate.

Eric, don't bodge this one or else it's going to be 7 engines in one years :-(

The outside if the oil pump unit. You know, the bit OUTSIDE the engine?

You lot are a bunch of mongs sometimes. You always think the worst.

Eric isn't as stupid as some people seem to think, he's just tight. Lol

Ha! Gaaaaayyy!

Yeah I'd know too.

i cant believe you lot think id paint something inside an engine.. there is no hope. i may aswell give up lmao.

welded my second inlet runner on, so both the middle ones are done.

mate of mine reckons hes ordered the conrod bolts and they come to £50, i think he may be pulling a fast one as thats higher than i expected so anyone know the actual VW price? i thought they were about £38

About £44 I thought

cheers babezzz..

coming down next week sometime?

I used a belt sander with a coarse belt to make sure my inlet plate was flat. Did me fine!

I'm not getting involved in anything else

nice one jim! if i have problems i may try something like that :)

plate has warped a fair bit tbh, as I'm gas welding the outside this time, and doing it all alot hotter as i want descent penetration and no air leaks (lol penetration)

should be able to unbend it in a vice with some adjustables tbh, the old fashioned way  and a bit of engineers blue.

if not i may make a jig and clamp it to a bench while heating it.

oil pump painted. looks so much better. need to sort the bolts now.

Few parts to source and inlet to finish. Got 3 weeks to do it.
