Its quite crazy what their doing and the insurance companies are feeding fuel to the fire by adding some kinda optional insurance. Use a decent insurance company is all I can say. I had an opel ascona in my younger days. It was impounded on me because of no insurance which I openly admitted I didn't have but I was not driving it at the time and it was not on the public highway. They impounded it on me for no insurance to do with another matter. I was able to go to the police station a week later with a friend. It still had no insurance or tax. I was able to tow it home from the police station and I incurred no costs for it. How things have changed so much now.

As far as that impounded car insurance thing goes. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Majority of insurance companies cover u to drive you are car anywhere in uk/Europe no matter what as long as u aint racing and it aint a hired vehicle. You probably find if you really want to follow up the legalities of what the police have done impounding you are car, u would open a can of worms so u could be banging you are head against a brick wall because u will be faced with so many people in the system that will try stop u revealing the illegalities that they are doing. Personally if it was me I wouldn't stop chasing it legally until I had a written letter of apology and compensation for the stress and hassle caused.

Go to police station and speak to the gimp in charge and explain situation. if nothing good happens, IPCC for a complaint.

ring AA and again, speak to a manager and make a formal complaint. speak to your bank if nothing good happens about claiming money back from them.

all else fails, rent a tank and storm the compound with force......

On my current policy it just says that I'm excluded from using this policy to remove a vehicle held in a police impound, doesn't specify if it's this vehicle or another not on the policy. They are just not picking as it doewnt make a difference I'm still named to drive this car and I'm licenced and the vehiclw itself is taxed and tested. Am I missing something?

Yes, your policy should look like the bit Metz quoted or you can't use it, if what you say above is correct. The reason for this is that anyone who got their car towed used to be able to turn up with someone with a trade policy or "third party only on other cars" and get the car back. As the reason a lot of the time for getting towed was no insurance this defeated the idea of the rules. Somewhere in the recent past either the law changed, the guidance changed or the insurers themselves got fed up with the situation. I have cover on a policy which allows me to drive anything I have a licence for third party only, EXCEPT I can only used that policy to get the specific car named in the policy out of a compound. It looks like your insurer's clause is wrongly worded and the guys at the compound are following procedure and not releasing the car. It doesn't help that they get this excuse/explanation from every other person trying to blag their car back.
