Just bought my first Polo

Good work cracking on! Yeah can't tell 100% with the top mounts because of all the crap but looks like they're in upside down. A new set should be about £15 - £20. You will probably find it's quite obvious which way they go when you've got a fresh set. Also if your worried about your top caps having a big gap under them, go down to your local breakers and get some top caps off a 6n (mk4) polo. These are the same except they are a lot shallower so will sit flush.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice, I have a pretty good breakers yard near me so I'll have to go check them out. My mate is currently putting a 6n back on the road so I'll have a talk with him and have a look :)

Today I managed to fit new bulb all round, I have upgraded to xenon bulbs with blue tinted side lights, but I have to say the side lights are a little chavy I suspect I will go back to the old ones. Also I have fitted the new crystal lensed side repeaters which look really nice :)

But most importantly I got my new air freshener fitted :D

Just bought a new grill of the bay :) When that arrives I will finally a have badge and can proudly pronounce the VW to the world :)

New tyres fitted yesterday with new values and balancing, £23 at Kwikfit. Couldn't, complain at that, and my new grill and badge arrived as well. That will be fitted today along with new oil, and 5.1 brake fluid. One more issue to sort with the top mounts and then it will be ready to MOT.

Get used to doing top mounts, I can do them in about 15 mins in the work shop now, these old olops seem to eat them.

Also make sure the ball joint on the TCA is snug in the hub, some times even tho the bolt is tight there can be slight play which wears through the bolt and then the ball joint pops out and demolishes the wing and driveshaft in the process.

You got the exhaust fitted yet.

That top mounts been fucking raped

Coming along nicely, should be a pleasure to drive with all those new bushes

Thanks the advice on the hubs, Ill be sure to check they are all snug and greased properly. I am going to get the top mounts down in the next two weeks I hope. And, yes the exhaust is fitted, I'll get a better picture added soon, it sits a little lower then I would like, but being an Alfa exhaust it was a little bigger so we had to drop it, to accommodate it. But it sounds awesome, without being at all Saxo Cherrybomb chavvy :)

Exhaust is sitting a little low but sounds fantastic :)

Just bought a set of 3 strut braces for £50 which seems like a pretty good deal all things considered. Hopefully get these fitted in the next couple of weeks.

So at long last I have finally been able to finish off the work to her. After sitting for a few months because I ran out of time I was able to start work again. A few minutes on the jump leads, some new fuel down the hole and a bit of PSI and she was ready to go. Immediately pulled the suspension off and replaced both the track rods and the top mounts. Cleaned the brakes up (just because they have been sitting a while) and got the whole lot back together. I still need to fit my strut kit seen above and I now am going to embark upon a service before being sent in for a MOT, but at long bloody last the car will be on the road!

I need some help guys!

I have been working in this for some months now, but as the gap in this thread suggest, I had to stop for a couple of months unforuntely and leave it to sit. When I got back to it, it hasn't been running very happily. I need a new battery now, it just want charge, but it would start when jumped. My issue is that the other day, while on jump leads it would turn over but not fire. It has got a tenners worth of fresh fuel but it just wont fire. I can hear the fuel pump priming but it seems the SPI isn't injecting fuel.

Have any of you experiences this on engines that have been sat for a while and do you have any idea what is the most likely cause?

I think/hope it is just that the battery is so shot that it doesn't have the power to fire the solinod to inject the fuel. But I am guessing right now.

Thanks

They need 12v to start even with a jump pack 12v can't be achieved due to a dead cell in the battery so it restricts the power. Also have a check to see if u have a spark it could be possible that dampness has got in the dizzy if been sat for a while

Thank you for the advice, I have a slight oil leak on the dizzy because of a worn oil seal although I am not sure where to replace that. But would explain moisture getting in. Ill replace the battery and also replace the spark plugs simply because I do not know when they were last changed and it is good servicing pratice. Your advice is greatly appreated :D

Fitted a brand new battery and taken the SPI apart, seems the injector isn't working but the ECU is fine. Now need to find a new injector. Also put 4 litres of fresh window washer fluid in which is -10 degree rated but more importantly it is berry scented for an extra 10hp yo!

After doing some extensive fault finding today all I can say is I am more confused. The injector that I thought was broken only showed a resistances of around 0.8 ohms which is too high, so I fitted the new one with a residences of around 0.6 which is within range.

But still it made no differences, this was made more confusing when you consider there is a live feed to the injector. So we fitted an oscilloscope to watch the wave form from the Hall Effect sensor on the cam shaft, this produced a normal square wave form.

So then I tested the spark and found that there was no spark either, this lead me to suspect the ECU. For a car to have good voltage but to not fire the injector or spark is very odd. There was 12V going to the ECU so we know power is making it there, but obviously the injector earths through the ECU so if this is faulty then it would not fire the injector. My next move is to replace the ECU and see if that gets it running.
