Awesome mate! Glad it all worked out and is back on the road!

Can you get personalised plates ? (HUYI 1) I know in Florida you could.

Cheers guys, she has just passed inspection (MOT) so she is fully road legal..... thank God.....

Yes you can Nige, I'm either getting G609HUY or HUYI when wdgdt to Florida :) the uk front plate is staying.

Does this mean you can now put the "proper" engine back in ?

Need to find a track day and show them V8's how it's done :)

How long did that take then? 5 minutes tops? You took it in and out that much in the UK it must have been nice and easy this time :)

Haha brilliant.

Well this was done last weekend the the old original engine was only really 'loosely' put in. So no driveshafts, exhausts or wiring. so it was a simple job. :)

Reversing light has decided not to work and the horn has packed up. Light must be corrosion as I'm getting 12v at the light socket and the bulb works and the horn must have just had enough as again I'm getting 12 volts going into it. New horn from VW USA.... $125....... I'm going aftermarket for now.

Have you checked the fuse contacts are clean? as if there is crud on the contacts it might not allow the current to make the bulb/horn work.

How did you go about passing the test? Was the old engine running? Did you take the crane with you? 🚗💨

Yes I took the crane with me.. and the 16v was in for the test :)

I've got a 17in air horn. Hoping I'll be able to cram it into the front cross-member from underneath.

Probably small-fry compared to the horns on the trucks over there though, if my memories of Convoy, Smokey and the Bandit etc are still any reflection of US trucks today..

Horn and reversing light now works thanks to Nige and MartinB. Nige was right and the fuse was cruddy. Cleaned it up and all good! :)

Now that she is all legal we will be heading out on our road trip to Florida in about 2 weeks time. So now's the time that I'm going though all the spare parts and deciding on what I'm taking with me on the trip and what can stay up north.

10mm, 13mm, double ended screwdriver, cable ties, duct tape and WD40.

... And an engine crane

TPS are selling 5 litres £7 +vat

you're all total n00bs, erm.. hammer?!

Use the side of the 10/13 spanner and hit it with the handle off the double-ended screwdriver.

Clever buggers VW, they thought of this stuff.

Thats like an accurate 'tapometer' proper hammers mean business 8>)
