TOP TIP COMING YOUR WAY i've just done a gt conversion in my mk3 cl, and have had a few electrical problems and it turned out to be on of the loom plugs that go through the bulkhead wasnt clipped in properly and caused me no end of problems!

make sure yours is clipped in!

Well Not much to report today. Picked up some more nuts and bolts from VW and too the manifold off due to me snapping one of the studs to the down pipe... DOH!! I'm thinking it may be easier to buy a new 4-2-1 rather than to mess around removing it... ummm :-D

Anyway here are some pics..

Well still no luck in getting the dam stud out... but Steve (aka 86c) came by and purchased the tyres I had for sale and just so happened to have a GT manifold in the boot of his car (As you do :) ) so a deal was struck and I now have a new manifold!!! :) Cheers Steve :thumbsup:

Well I have spent most of the day removing and fitting the fuel pump wiring and the diagnostic plugs. Now I knew that I had to do something with the wiring for these things but not exactly what. So thanks again to Steve (86c) for helping with this.

I have gone for more of a how to with this post as I haven't really found much of this information when searching for GT swap posts.

Basically you need to remove 3 pins from the white socket that plugs into the back of the fuse box. These 3 cables lead to yellow sockets (see below) so they are easy to identify

This is the mk3 socket EDIT new picture with correct locations

As you can see I have marked out the pins you need to remove. You can probably demolish the plug to do this. The bottom one is the lead that goes to the fuel pumps via the yellow sock bellow

You can see the single cable on the left (which leads to the white socket) and the 2 cables on the right goes to the fuel pumps (1 to each)

Each fuel pump also have a brown earth cable which runs into a socket up behind the dash. You can just see this in the picture above (brown cable with the black electrical wrapped round it). This plugs into the same socket on the Mk2

And the top 2 feeds the diagnostic socket via the yellow socket below.

The lift pump under the rear seats also has the fuel gauge sender which is connected via the lilac/black cable and connects into the main loom via pin number 7 (as seen below)

Again I removed this so I can feed it into the same place in the Mk2.

I stripped the 5 cables (2 to the fuel pump under the rear of the car, 3 to the fuel lift pump/sender) from the rear loom A bit of a pain :)

As you can see 2 of the sockets are free but the one at the bottom needs removing and taping up. And the place the fuel pump pin diagnostic pin in the same socket.

The top 2 diagnostic pins simple remove and place them into the same sockets on the mk2.

The other diagnostic socket (the black one) follow it up and unplug it. you should see it works as a plug through so I believe that this is just some kind of power socket. Find the same socket on the mk2 and disconnect it and then plug it back in using the plug though.

All in all this took me the best part of the afternoon :)

There's just one more wire to add that I forgot to tell you about for the rev counter.

In the engine bay, on the coil, lift up the small flap to reveal two 8mm nuts.

Attach a piece of wire long enough to reach the dash clocks under the terminal marked 1.

Run this to the inside of the car, and with the dash clocks out, locate the original feed for the rev counter.

This should be red with a black tracer(pin 7 or KL1 on the clocks usually)

Cut the wire about a couple of inches away from the clocks and solder the new wire to it then protect with heatshrink.

I have picked one of these up from GSF today as I thought the old one was on the way out. It was either that or I hadn't bled the brakes correctly last time i did it. But as the engine is out and it is a cheap thing I thought why not :)

Also I have just got off the phone from Adrian Flux and I got stonkingly good quote from them for the car. So I will be taking that out with them when it is on the road. :)

Well Been a busy day today. :)

Fitted the new master cylinder which I got from GSF. The replacement one has fittings for 6 lines so 2 blanking screws are needed.

Next up was putting the GT engine into the Mk2 :)

So it is IN!!!! :) well chuffed. The harest part was sorting out the rear engine mount.. But with some pushing and a pulling it went in. I have plugged in all plugs that I can and so..... its nearly done!! :) (well depending how you look at it :) )

I have also added the steering rack bracket for the steering damper just in-case I want to add it in the future.

Well.... hopefully tomorrow isn't as bad as the weather men say it will be and I can carry on working on it.... :)

Very unproductive day today as the weather was crap and I went out to lunch. So all I did was to freshen up the front struts that I am going to put on with some nice shiny black paint :)

I have tomorrow off work if the weather is nice so I have a list of things that need doing:

-Fit the cooling system

-Fit the resister to the heater

-Fite the Gear Shifter from the Mk3

-Remove and re-fit the rear axle

-Remove and fit the Mk3 Fuel lines

-Fit the Mk3 tank (I am actually thinking of just modifying the Mk2 one)

-Fit the fuel pumps and filters

-Fit the G40 Front struts

-Fit G40 Rear springs and Shocks

-Fit Braided Lines

-Fit lower GED Brace.

The aim for tomorrow is to get the engine started and then I can concentrate on the rear end :shock:

It would definitely be easier to mod the mk2 tank if its in good condition. You join the feed and return for the mechanical fuel pump together, and mod the lift pump by making it shorter (think you can remove the 1-way valve).

Tanks are a bastard to remove/refit!

Tanks in '85 - '90 cars need no mods to the lift pump to fit.

Tanks are easy to remove and refit :lol: (sometimes!)

Just read this entire thread. Looks like you've been busy. Found this will be useful reference as I'm intending to tackle a GT swap but into a mk3 instead. Seen the comment about the GT I-Drive and gotta say I have noticed a suprisingly high amount of MTBs about ClubPolo, I've got an 06 Kona Shred dirt jump bike for my trips accross the town (down the steps usually) and occasionally about the mountains lol. If you didnt sell the GT arches and skirts off the mk3 please PM me lol. I will be looking a set come the 31st of this month (payday). Car's looking great and dont forget to keep us informed of the progress of the Nurburgring beast!!

Well the pump is in and it fits like a glove :)

The fuel pipes are another matter. The seem to disappear above the tanks but I can not seem to get them out from there. I'm just wondering if they are attached up there with a clamp or something?? Any Ideas???

I also attached the rad, header tank and air box.

I have used the Mk3 Rad and Fan as they seem to be narrower than the mk2 one and as you can tell it is very cramped in there. I thinki for the header tank I am going to fabricate some brackets so I can use the original Mk2 fixings.

I have also stripped off the front struts so I can fit the new ones which are currently at the garaged getting the bearing pushed in as I didnt fancy doing that myself! :)

I was going to get the soft compound ones but after getting some feedback from a Yokohama guy my brother knows he said a Medium would be fine.

I also picked up a GT rear axle last night as I thought it would save me a whole load of hassle in removing the one from the donor car. Especially as I don't have to remove the fuel tank (well I hope I don't) This will be brushed down and painted in gloss black.

I have also removed the drive shafts from the old struts which are the ones I'll be using with the GT engine. Word of advice remember to removed the drive shaft nuts whilst the struts are on the car!!! :) luckily I had loosened them a few months ago but they were still a right bugger to get off!!! :)

The brand new discs that were on the car looked liked the had seen better days as they had got a bit rusty :shock: So i'll give these a good clean up as well as cleaning up the new callipers. I prob will order some new disc's and pads an just keep the ones I have as spares

So that's were it currently stands.. and it looks very unlikely that I will get the car running for the rolling road day.. :( oh well :)

this is exactly what I'm about to try so you sir are a GOD for putin all this on! did you have any trouble swapin the looms as thats the main bit I'm worried about as I'm sh*t with electrics!

Now I would never say I was GOD... second son of GOD maybe!!! :lol: :-D

The wiring was easy. It was the bit that actually scared me too but because I just the loom out of the donor car and put it straight in to the Mk2 the loom kept its shape so it told me (in a way and not by little voices they have nearly all gone :lol: ) where it went. I also labelled all the connections up so I knew where each one went. I didn't know what each one did but I put on stuff like 'Top of Distributor' and 'side of inlet manifold'. I also took loads of pictures whilst it was in the donor car so I have a photographic record and the wiring diagrams in back of both the Mk2 & Mk3 haynes manuals came in useful.

Obviously that is if you have a donor car :) if not i might take you a bit longer to work it out but VW was quite good and alot of the plugs are unique'ish so if you know of the area they are suppose to go you can find the right plug.

I have been following this thread with great interest and i have to say that it will be a beast of a mk2.

I also have a coupe S and it is my pride and joy. Due to the engine only having 40,000 on the clock when i got it i thought i would try and get the best out of it instead of a straight conversion. I went the weber on the GK inlet and a few other mods will see it powerful enough to satisfy me until a nice low miler lump of an engine turns up.

Your car will be awesome fun to drive. Good luck with everything and keep us all updated. I may need to refer back to this in the future!! :-)
