My Polo Coupe S - Project Part deux

So am i going to have this same problem on the mk3?!

Did you have any issues with the drive shafts or they fine?

Well it depends on how the manifold is made, and Heg doesn't have a problem with them in his car. I know Bogg Brothers lost the template they had for the AFH engine as I had to send up my original inlet manifold so it could be the case that they lost the dimensions as well.

If they just go off at the same angle off the head then they will fit. I think it's that they set it to be at 45 degrees when the engine is vertical but on polos the engine is canted forward which means the carbs are at a much steeper angle, which means they go higher. I'm pretty sure that if the inlet manifold keeps the same angle coming off the head and not have the second bend then it will be fine and be an acceptable angle for the carbs to work.

Well I haven't attached the drive shafts yet but there wont be any issues with them as the gearbox hasn't changed so they should just slot back on :)

Well I spoke to Bogg Brothers yesterday and they are basically just going to make them so the just come out from the inlet face in the initial angle. This should give them more than enough clearance and almost perfect working angle.

But this was a picture before I took them off :)

Its getting there slowly :)

its looking fantastic 8-)

how does the afh compare to the stock 1.3 block in terms of weight? are you going for a limited slip diff?

wish you good luck :-)

to be honest I'm not too sure but I think its pretty similar.

Yeah I would want to get a LSD in the future but at present there is just not the funds to do it. So I'm going to see how it goes for now. I think LSD, Subframe and better suspension would all have to be done at the same time.

Well fitted the rad and pipes

DSC01108.jpg

and then I realised they were on the wrong way round.. :)

and lets just say that the engine compartment is a bit tight..

DSC01109.jpg

Yep the exhaust manifold is touching the rad shielding nothing a hammer wont sort out though :)

Also I changed the oil, plugs, oil filter and the Gear box oil. But to be honest I'm not sure why the stuff that came out was really nice and clear but as I had the stuff and I don't know if it ever had been done I thought what the heck

List of things to do:

-Fit the remaining Manifold nuts

-Tighten Driveshaft bolts

-Get some Trumpet socks

-Attach the accelerator cable to the pedal

-put in coil and wire up

-fix temp sender plug

-block off fuel return at tank

-wire in fuel pump and impact sensor

-plumb in fuel pipes

-wire in rev counter

-set the initial timing

-get it rolling roaded and set up

Dibbs on first passenger ride please mark!!

Great progress, love all the work you have done looks sweet! I have just got my AFH engine ready for my conversion, just wondered if anybody has any info on running standard EFI in a mk3? Cheers

Cheers, :)

Apparently its not too bad... saying that I've never looked into it. Probably the hardest thing will be is finding a Wiring diagram for the engine. :)

Tar Very much :)

Itsss back and it fits!!! :)

£540 that doesn't sound that bad if all the mod's and engine swap is declared

any way how old are you and what ncb are you useing for that car ??

  • Author

Well I got another quote for £360.. which is much better :)

I must admit that a lot of the stuff in the picture is not actually connected properly.. I just did it so I could see how they look.. :?:

So its not running yet. I'm going to work on my list (see below) this weekend and then hopefully get someone who knows how to set the timing on engine to come over next weekend to help me do that. It then should give me 2 weeks to get it to Aldon for them to play around with.

Right the list has got longer!

It started with a list......

100_0753.jpg

And I can now say I would gladly pay the 300 odd quid for a subframe as long as I never have to mess with the Bloody G-Larder arb blocks again!!

But....

Got the tyres fitted to my rims

And this is where my list currently stands as of saturday

Well this is how the list now stands after today.

100_0777.jpg

Fit accelerator cable is half ticked as its not done properly.. as you can see in the picture

100_0775.jpg

The reason for this is the available pull on the carbs is less than what was on the standard engine. So using the standard point would mean the peddle would only go half way down or it would only come half way back, this set-up means I have full peddle travel. But I still have to work out a nicer set up... :-p

I've wired up and plumbed in the fuel pump and also fitted the fuel cut off switch(red button).

100_0776.jpg

Painted the fuel pump/regulator bracket so it won't rust.

100_0773.jpg

now the car is on the floor i have realised how low it actually is. Its great but doesn't half hurt you back bending over all the time!!

Its going to be a dam good event, something that may not be repeated again... I'm really looking forward to it, it will be a bit of a baptism of fire for the car, If she is ready... hopefully firing her up on Sunday!! :)

oh and....

th_ef3555c6.jpg

:eey:

Not all great though, as I'm having a problem with the accelerator cable. Just touch the pedal and it shoots up to 4000rpm So I might be replacing the cable in a trial to get it to work properly with a mount point as close to the pivot as possible...

i want your wheels and down pipe lol lookin gd mate

could be the tiny throttle wheel, larger one might cure it, or custom accelerator pivot.

I'm very curious on the result on the road, have you driven it yet?

I'm curious as I'm planning on doing the same swap on my white mk2 gt :-D from all the engines that i have seen that are "not dificult" to fit on the mk2, the afh is the only one with bigger bore than stroke and the best choice to make a screamer I'm my opinion ;)

dont forget that you have lightened the flywheel, throttle responce is much sharper after that :)

i really love this and even to the point where iam looking through ebay for an engine! complete car for 350 accident damaged! intriguing! i have a mk3 loon at the mo, but fancy a coupe mk2/mk3 to do this with!

are you still without a servo?? bet that will make for some hairy moments!

good luck with the niggles.
