  • Right a bit of an update is over due me thinks. Last August I noticed some rust under the sill trims.. Luckily is was only light surface stuff where there was a thin covering of paint. So after cryin

  • Cheers Simon. I does go well and the more miles I put on the engine the quicker it seems to get :) Not really done much apart from completing the 2000 mile european road trip. Hit Polo Treffen in Ho

could be the tiny throttle wheel, larger one might cure it, or custom accelerator pivot.

I'd go with this...

Only just read this thread again after many months off here.

Last I knew, the GT was just going in

Credit to you though Mark 8-)

Cheers Steve yeah its changed a bit :) Hows yours going?

I managed to make it so it mounts closer to the pivot point of the pedal but I had drill a hole in the bulk head

Fitted my remote oil pressure pipe

Had a bit of fun

and also :)

Went out for a drive on Thursday night and while it was quick is wasn't that much quicker than my GT... then I realised it wasn't opening the throttle fully so a little adjustment and my word!!!!! 8-)

I'm very curious on the result on the road, have you driven it yet?

I'm curious as I'm planning on doing the same swap on my white mk2 gt :-D from all the engines that i have seen that are "not dificult" to fit on the mk2, the afh is the only one with bigger bore than stroke and the best choice to make a screamer I'm my opinion ;)

dont forget that you have lightened the flywheel, throttle responce is much sharper after that :)

Yep its a bit of a monster on the road. very quick, quicker than my 328 :-D It wasn't that bad to fit really. It was all initially a bit of an unknown but not its ok :)

i really love this and even to the point where iam looking through ebay for an engine! complete car for 350 accident damaged! intriguing! i have a mk3 loon at the mo, but fancy a coupe mk2/mk3 to do this with!

are you still without a servo?? bet that will make for some hairy moments!

good luck with the niggles.

Cheers, It seems a few more people are going to be doing this conversion know. And I don't blame them. Yep no servo.. just big leg mussels

Cheers,

Its on the road.. just being tuned and then popping in to have some changes to the exhaust :)

it sounds great m8, please do some onboard videos 8-)

the only thing u had to manufacture was the alternator mount, so, the engine mounts are the same, right?

I could watch that video over and over, sounds awsome :-D

i got to the end of the thread :(

Picking the car up from the garage today.. so there will be some more to report this weekend :)

Just read of all this, true dedication...Love it!

Great work

you sold the gt engine and loom and refitted the S loom from what i can gather through the read, is this due to the un-needed extra sesor wiring of the GT? i assume you have also used the S dizzy to eliminate the need of the coil pack? so if i was to look into this conversion i would only need basic wiring as the carbs eliminate the air/fuel meter and the older style dizzy removes the crank sensor wiring (if it is fitted on the AFH) for spark control.

with the carbs are you engineering a choke set-up? dont know bikes to well, but have quite a good knowledge on cars - i teach mechanics in a college. did they manufacturte bike carbs with chokes? i would assume so, but like i said I'm not too clued on them!

what engine mountings did you need to modify? just the front one by the alternator? are the mk2 the same mounting points as a mk3?

sorry for all the questions.

awesome thread. i have a budget of around a 1000 to have a go at this conversion, which i would think is plenty, just for the engine/carbs/exhaust (already have carbs) so manifold! i will probably go ahead with my mk3 saloon forst and then transfer it into a coupe in the future. already have the saloon whilst i look for a family car! A6 i think.

great thread, keep up the good work and very informative thread. hat off to you.

Well What you are doing is running a carbed engine again so I just used the wiring for my old carbed engine. This was easier than trying to modify the GT loom and I could then sell it with the GT engine.

The carbs came with a pull choke and I just wired to the a Mk2 choke leaver. But I actually disconnected it as it doesn't seem to need it.

Just the one as listed in this thread. Yes Mk2 and 3 mounts are the same.

sorry for all the questions.

Not a problem and further questions just yell :)

The car is bloody quick.... :)

The guy at Southam Mini & Metro Centre was saying that the engine really is amazing. It pulls right from 1000rpm all the way to 7000+ with no flat spots or anything. We got it up to 6750 on the road and then we bottled it and it was still pulling just as hard with no sign of backing off. We did decide that I need to have some kind of rev limiter on there as I don't think it has one as standard.

My brother followed me back in his 200sx and he said he really had to work hard to keep up and it was pretty even on the acceleration front. get to 5000rpm and the power just comes surging it and it just does not stop. Under 5000rpm it just great you can just pootle along and nobody would know any difference. On the motorway 60-90mph is just amazing it fly though it. It is a really hoot to drive.

I've ordered new brake fluid and some DS2500's as it now shows up how crap the brakes are. If this doesn't make it any better I'll look into a remote brake servo that I've seen for £150.

Brilliant topic, can't wait to get my 1st car now, although any work like this will have to wait for a couple of years while I build up a no claims =[

sounds like an amazin' car mate. you gonna be takin a cruise down to plymouth friday then??

Well not Bristol Bristol, just Cribbs Causeway as we have to pop to M&S... as you do.

No Spare cash for a sub frame at the moment :( you say spare... do you have 2? :)

one on my car, the other is my spare, taken from Danny Lees car i bought. if you can spare half an hour i'd love to see the car.

sweet ;) dont get carried away with all that power now and get here too early, gates don't open til 2  i'll keep an eye out for you car to have a ganderzz.

When you taking me for a ride then?! :-D

Loverly thread max, great work! It's wicked seeing people use the AFH, has so much potential.

Any plans to stick the AEE 1.6 bottom end on it? :D

will this beast be at stonor ??

  • Author

Cheers guys. :)

Dan, Next time i'm over Kiddy way I'll let you know :)

No plans to do any further engine mods as it really doesn't need it. It has all the power I need and I think any more it would just be a bit unusable.

It won't be at stoner as I'm heading out for lunch.

It made the 500 mile round trip to plymouth with out a problem. The only issue I think was the fuel pump was getting a bit hot in the engine bay. SO I might have to make a heat shield for it.

Just changed the pads to DS2500 and already they are so much better than the Green Stuff. I have got some Castrol Response Super DOT 4 which will be put in this week. Also I'm going to do a coolant change before Bovington next week.

I dont know how i missed this build, great work! Good to see a proper build thread going on.

How do you find the G40 shocks and 40mm springs? I'm thinking of a similar combo myself rather then the cheap lowering kits..
