Hi mark, It's your cousin tom (peters son)

Was round your dads today with my dad, he mentioned what your car was running and had to check out the thread, and it is unbelievable what you have done.

I've currently just started working on my car ( mk1 saxo vtr, on saxperience)

will be keeping an eye on this, wouldn't mind seeing it in the flesh to get some advice/inspiration

Good Evening :-D Fancy seeing you on here... I won't mention how old you were or how big you were last time I saw you!! anyway....

Cheers, word of advice don't start messing with cars... they cost money!!! not that anyone pays any notice to that.

I'll pop over to Saxperience and have a look... good cars those saxo... bloody great fun to drive!

So... have you/are you going to track it? ;)

Well next time I'm back over I'll have to pop round.. you back in stourbridge?

Mark.

ha! Yeah I'm back in stour, finishing degree in birmingham uni living at home.

As for tracking my car id love to, but its my daily and only car so cant strip it, only had it 6 months, is lowered and k and n induction kit on it. Just finished paying for it. Next plans are 4-2-1 manifold and new exhaust maybe decat, student loans will help.

Will think about stripping it when i can afford another car.

Whats next for yours?

Cool.. sounds like a good base. I would recommend a Longlife exhaust as I know quite a few people who have had them and they have all been good. I've got one on mine. There is a place in Brum and one here in Leamington.

I wouldn't worry too much about stripping the car it more of a placebo than anything. The only thing I've really taken out of mine are the rear seat but I've left all the carpet and stuff in. It gets a bit loud otherwise and I like to use it as much as I can on the road.. road trips and the like.

Actually me and Jon where thinking of doing a track day soon so if you fancy giving it a try come up with me and my bro. I'm sure Jon won't mind doing a bit of tuition if you wanted it.. (got to exploit the Family connections! :) ) Not to sure what track yet but there is one an Mallory Part in Derbyshire (I think) that is a ok and its quite cheap.

Well I think I'm done for this year really, next I think is suspension. Get some GAZ coilovers and you can get a subframe to hold all the suspension together better. Also I really need to get a roll cage as I've saw a couple of rolls on one of the track days I went to and it didn't look pretty. Luckily they all had cages. But don't let that put you off as if you drive with in your limits you will be fine! :)

Well i wouldn't even try keeping up with you or jon but would love to come for a track day. Went to rockingham a few weekends back with saxp for the french car show, would of loved to of gone on the track there but time was fully booked.

The coilovers sound good.

Whats the spec of Jons skyline?

You would be surprised what you can keep up with by just driving well. :) I know some one with a 80bhp polo that was owning RX-8 all day long... :)

He's got a 200sx Turbo. It basically standard apart from an SS exhaust system and uprated brakes. He's trying to resist buying a M3 now! :)

hey up max, i have gotten myself a complete 6n 16v so i may be quizzing you more in depth soon.

cheers

Ha :) No worries.... I'll try my best to have some answers :)

Mark..

sorry. . .Mark.

I'm really excited!

mark, why do people use bike carbs? i have been thinking about dropping it all in and using the 6N injection/loom etc.

what do you think?

Cause they sound fantastic :)

The main reason being in this conversion is that you don't have to worry about the wiring. You can use the injection part but you just have to work out how to wire it all up. Also using Bike carbs means you can get quite a bit of extra power out of the engine as well.

Mark (sorry - keep calling you max!) i need your help!

i may have found myself a distributor/coil but what is the 'module' you mentioned?

a guy is breaking a coupe S and i have asked for the coil/distributor/module and wiring, but what exactly do i need? he is stripping so should i just ask for all wiring in the engine and the above bits (what is the module?)

sorry to be a pain, but at the moment you are the 16v conversion god! we all salute you!! LOL!

cheers

It kinda looks like a small ECU. But its just the coil module. I would get the whole engine bay loom (so all the wires in the engine bay) Plus the coil and the dizzy and cap off the engine. and I think that will be fine :)

No Probs :)

how much would that lot be worth ??

  • Author

Not a lot really.. you can get a whole engine/gearbox and loom for £50 :)

Hi Mark (sorry about calling you max again!)

ill let him know what i need, i had a route through hegs topic on his rally mk2, awesome build and read, i was sat here for about 2.5 hours reading and then he rolled it! gutted!

i spotted what i think is the right part and sent it to the person selling the stuff.

i have a spare engine mount so i can get that modded whilst I'm still using the daily and if i can the wiring and stuff then i hope i can do this conversion pretty quick, thanks to your great topic.

Cheers

Rick

hi mark, do you know whether i would be able to use a distributor with points on the conversion?

cheers

excellent looking project!

sorry to send things backwards again but can you give me anymore info on the engine mount?

do the bottom 2 bolts go into the lock, and the top 3 hold the mk2/3 mount in the correct position or do the top 3 go into the block aswell?

and i seem to remember a thread somewhere with a drawing of the bracket you made up, with dimensions on, any chance of posting that up pretty please :D

keep up the good work though, you are an inspiration to speed freaks everywhere :D

just re-read your thread, looking for jet sizes, but you didnt mention changing them, so i assume you left the carbs alone? am i right?

i have made up/butchered the original afh inlet for my bike carbs and have managed to get them mounted, bought a bike fuel pump as well, I'm going to be manufacturing the plate and trimming the engine mount tomorrow, ignition is on (used a CoupeS one off polo pete) so I'm nearly ready to go in!! well its going in on saturday! i have a week to get it running for the local show - tatton.

is there any chance you can give me some information on the starter motor you have used? this is the only part thats holding me up!

and last but not least which clutch kit did you use? a performance one? i was wondering if the g40 clutch kit would fit.

cheers

nope they have been re-jetted ... twice.. Once when the carbs went to Bogg Brothers and the second when they got properly set up by Southam Mini and Metro centre. Bogg Brothers set them up so the car will run and then Southam Mini did the fine tuning. They need to be enlarged but by how much does depend. I think mine are 1.48mm or something like that but I can't be sure. I totally recommend you get the car to a rolling road.

As for the starter motor I used my Mk2 one. You be better off looking at Renagade440 thread as he's posted up about it.

The clutch I used a standard Mk3 one but a G40 one will fit but apparently the standard 1.4 16v one will fit with the Mk2/3 flywheel and its the same size as the g40 one.

The standard mk3 one in mine seems to cope with the power fine.

Mark..

thanks Mark, i have been on renegades as well, he used a late model mk3 polo starter, but they were only available for one year, so I'm a bit limited, hence why i asked about your mk2 one - theres more mk2 polos than M reg mk3 polos!

ill get the jets ordered then, ill go with 145 to start with.

Thanks

Rick

(i cant wait!!)

Hi, fantastic thread! Really inspired and and very nice car! probably a silly question, but can i just ask why you didnt use the afh gearbox?? Does it need a different mount?

Just been thinking about this conversion for my mk1 golf (don't hate me!) and was wondering if you could tell me..

its a 1.3 by the way

1. Could i use the golf driveshafts? It currently has a 4 speed gearbox so i'm sure this wouldnt handle the power effectively! But if i used the 8P or gt box?

2. Could i use the golf dizzy, coil and wiring? :?

3. What sort of mpg you get out of the car?? Heard bike carbs are quite bad but yours are properly set up?

Thanks very much!

ill have a go at this one mark - or try!

1, if you use your 4 spd golf box then the driveshafts will be fine, i would assume the 8p/gt box will be the same as your 4sp box just going from engine size, i didnt use the mk4 box because it wsa cable change and i couldnt see the point with me having a good 8p box, but mikeymk has used a mk4 box in his 1.6 conversion, so it must be possible.

2, i would say that as your mk1 is carb based it would work on your current ignition set up, but would highly recommend sourcing a mk2 polo coupe S as this gets rid of your points,

3, cant say what the mpg will be as i haven't really had mine out much yet.

hope that is of some use, and if you search for renegades topics, he has a good diagram for making up the engine mount.

mark, i am running and even been out for a drive!!! can you tell me if you added a return spring on your carbs as mine seem to take an eternity to return to idle!

thanks for all your help during my conversion.

Rick

Cheers..

as my answers would have been ummmm don't know :)

As for the MPG I don't think its been affected that much but the temptation is to drive it hard so yes it does drop :)

I did add a return spring but alot is to do with how and where the cable is run. Also the type of cable used. I've got a teflon coated cable with a high quality outer. I tried to remove as many tight curves as possible and re-drilled the whole where it entered the cabin to make it straight down to the new fixing point on the pedal.

where did you get your cable mark, did you have to file down the barrel tip of the cable to fit the carbs?

did you take the original motorbike cable with you when buying the new cable?

i bought a universal rear brake cable and used the bonnet pull sleeve from the donor 16v 6n.

but i have a few tight bends in my cable, so this may not be helping.

sorry for more questions! id stick a pick up of mine but computer is not playing ball.

cheers mark.

I got it from halfords. Its one of the expensive brake cables and I just used the cable and outer that came with it. You need a high quality outer to stop it binding. Yeah I had to file down the tip to get it to fit in.
