Today made the repair plate for the rear arch

Mike cleaned out the rear chassis rail back to clean metal

which got bigger

and bigger

It seems the water was just sitting in this area. But even though a lot was cut out it actually makes it easier to repair :)

Wow that is some work being undertaken there. Will be worth it in the end :-)

Makes me worried about my mk2 now but this proves that a lot of dedication can fix most things

I wonder if one or two more small drainage holes could rectify this? Theres a few dotted about from factory, but they either haven't been working as they should or have maybe become blocked with road grime?

New metal will be going in and once the whole car is done all the cavities will be wax oiled, this will stop any of this rust coming back. It seems the water got in and soaked down into the the corners of the rear chassis box section. If I had done this a few years ago it wouldn't have been this bad. And to do a whole car is rather cheap.

And also cut out the Mk1 rear arch to use as the repair panel for the Mk2 inner arch

Coming on nicely Mark :-). Be nice to have this and the MRS meet at a show after all they've been through .

Massive respect for this. Anyone else would have just re-shelled it.

It worries me that from the outside the shell looked pretty dam clean, then after inspection its a totally different story.

You are probabbly wright about the re-shell but it just wouldn't have been the same car!

Yeah that's the worrying thing there was just a small bit of rust by the filler flap and the rest of the car was almost mint. But its only when you start pealing stuff back that you finally see the whole picture!

Heading down tomorrow to work on her, should be fabricating the inner fuel hole area. The rear quarter should go back in in the next couple of weeks hopefully :)

I say bronzey, coppery could would suit the centres so nicely. Don't do black, you lose all the detail in the lattice of the wheels.

Yeah I want something interesting as the rest of the car will look standard so the wheel colour are the only think I can change to make it stand out a bit :)

I was thinking that about black.. Gold is good but everyone has it (perhaps they do cause it looks good)

I'm trying to get it finished... I'm going to see If I/they can put a few extra hours on it during the week just to get the body work done and into primer..

A lot of people do gold but also a lot of people do black and i just think black on lattice wheels makes them lose a bit of the detail and then they just look like any 13" with a polished dish.

To say how fresh the car will be i think metalic centres are a must. The reason i like the coppery/bronzey look is that i think it does well with the red/orange light clusters. Sure you will come up with something good but i say make the most of those sexy wheels you have.

Hell yes.. this weather really isn't helping as its perfect for it.. and I really want to be taking weekends away with/showing the car.

Yep externally its going to be totally standard apart from the wheels.

how about a black chrome centre with diamond cut rim?

Quite a productive day at the shop..

this is the mk1 outer arch test fitted

and you can also see the metal work that Mike has put together to fix the fuel filler area

I marked up the quarter panel for cutting...

and then fitted it to check the inner arch

What we found was that even though the arch was similar its not quite right. So Mike is going to make up his own inner arch edge to match the mk2 outer panel :)

Mike welded in the brand new fabricated plate. This was made just out of 2 pieces

He stayed on after lunch to get bits done and I got a picture from him... all welded, sealed and painted
