Well.... Nearly 2 years an no update...  Sorry about that.. 
So we headed out on a 2 month 5,800 mile road trip of the East Coast of the US via Canada. Loads of pictures and info can be found here :)

Oh yeah, when you add on that it did 2 European trips the year before covering probably covering the same number of miles it's pretty good! :)

 

So we got to Florida.. 

 

Then this is when things perhaps started to be come more real. We needed to find a place to live and jobs... oh boy. This was a shock to the system after not working for 6 months and being on the road for the last 2!!

We were both very lucky and we found a small place to stay and both got good jobs very quickly.. so we needed to increase the size of our Family!!

 

This is Clemmie... a 2015 MINI Cooper S. I wasn't expecting to like this car so much.. but its excellent...

So much so.....

This is Poppy, a 2015 MINI Cooper JCW.  You could say we are a small car Family!!

Now were in Florida we had to get Huyi some Floridian plates


And we could start taking her to some shows. Bearing in mind it gets really hot here so whilst I love driving her it's somethings not the most comfortable!!

Some might know that on the road trip I had a couple of issues with the engine cutting out.. like it was fuel starvation. My fueling set up is bike carb fuel pump up in the engine bay and its been running like this ever since I put carbs on the car. I've run it on trackdays and road trips and i've put 1,000's of miles on it like this and never had a problem.

 

Anyway I had the carbs rebuilt and cleaned on the roadtrip and I've also replaced the Dizzy. After talking to another mechanic down here in Florida he did give me some useful information that got me thinking. The heat for one it gets hot here in the US, also we are at much lower sea level. So this did get me thinking about the whole fueling set up again. The fuel pump was the highest part of the fuel system in the engine bay and also the pump is designed to push fuel rather than pull it. And finally when I was trying to start it up a few weeks ago I would have to manually 'pump' the fuel in the rubber pipes to try and prime the pump, but it would still only run for a min or 2 before cutting out. So my mine was made up, I was going to relocate the pump. 

So.. thanks to Yeti he shipped a mk2f fuel injection bracket and I relocated the fuel pump to the back of the car!

 

 

 

Already I have noticed a big difference in just starting the car. It starts up much more quickly and I've driven a couple of miles with it and it all seems ok.. so fingers crossed!!

Also gave her a clean for Eurotripper next weekend! :)

I had a similar problem a long time ago when I put a mini electric pump under the back on my old breadvan, I changed to an MGB one (so a "pushing" pump not a "pulling" pump and it sorted it). 

 

I left the accumulator on the bracket, they're worth leaving on as they help maintain the fuel supply in the corners.... should you happen to come across any in America! 

So update on the fuel pump.. it didn't fix the issue... but it did change what was happening. So I'm sure it's the fuel pump. With the pump in this locations it as soon as I start to go above 50 I get fuel starvation and as soon as I brake then you can her the pump suddenly pump a load of fuel as the momentum of the fuel rushing to the front of the tank pushing it through the fuel pump.

So it would appear that the CBR600 fuel pump is not totally up to the job, which is interesting considering I've done 10,000 of miles round Europe with it without issue. So there are a few things that might explain. The ambient temperature is much higher here so the fuel so the fuel would be less dense. This could mean the fuel pump is having a harder time pumping the fuel. Also with the higher temps it could mean the fuel vaporizes much easier. Adding to this the fuel over here has much more ethanol in it too. Which is more prone to vaporization. 

So after swearing a bit... I fitted a 1-4psi solid state fuel pump.

 

So this is pumping all the time but it max's out at 4psi so I don't think it would be any issue with the carbs. Took the car over to Orlando for the Air2Water show which is about a 2hr drive away and no issue with fuel starvation or it cutting out. So fingers crossed!!

 

 

How ever the journey back from Orlando was not trouble free.. The gear shifter ball decided to go wandering 5 miles from home so I had no gears!. Luckily was right outside a motorfactors and cobbled this together (the left is the OEM one!)

 

Its not pretty but it got me 1st and 3rd and the 5 miles back home.
