Is this round the right way?

Well I think so.. They haynes book of lies says that the bend in the front section of the bar must face upwards. which it does. But the bar is touching the Down pipe and it is also touching the gear box. So is the book lying to me?? :)

The book is lying cos my haynes said that the bend must face upwards, whereas on my mk2 it doesnt fit that way cos of the arb and all the geometry looks wrong

Swap it round

Well I have finally added a mod that will increase BHP by a promised 10%... I've added some go faster stripes!!!

DSC00509.jpg

Also I picked up this bargain today for £3!!!

DSC00510.jpg

I have fitted the sender and I just have to get a pod and run the wiring. Also I'm after a oil temp gauge to go in the pod! :)

Those sprint images are great! I want!

Why did you have to faff about with wiring the rev counter? Mine was pretty much plug and play - something I miss?

something to do with the mk3 wiring loom i guess

Cheers... I'm quite liking the pics.. Its nice seeing the car on the move

Well I have swapped the the ARB round and i think it feels a little softer at the front which could be good to reduce a bit of the understeer.

I forgot to get pics before I swapped it round but here are some pics

You can see at the front that the bump actually sits flat when its on giving some extra clearance to the manifold.

0803080008.jpg

Here you can see how it clears the end of the gearbox

0803080007.jpg

And here you can just see the marks where it was fouling the gearbox

Another round of applause dude.

Any figures yet? I.e. 0-60?

Well I have just been down to a public weigh bridge and I have found out that in its current form the car weighs 760kg (with a full tank of fuel which I have worked out to be 30kg... i think). So 730kg with 75bhp That's 102.7bhp/Tonne :). I am going to try to take down to Aldon this week or next to find out what power it is pushing out before I start messing with the engine.

corner weights for the win

EDIT to boast - 800kg at 96bhp = 120bhp/tonne

I'm not sure if its actually going to save any weight but it should hold me in a lot better :)

I have dealt with a cooling issue today.

I was using the coupe S radiator (which has the breather pipe to the header tank) with the GT fan but I was finding that the fan was not kicking on until well up in the temperature range (just over 3/4) which I wasn't liking.

So today I switched to using the GT rad which, according to ETKA, is 525mm vs the Coupe S's 380mm. I kept the GT fan unit as the socket on the Coupe S one is different but I swapped the fan blades over. The GT one only had 4 blades but the Coupe S one had 6.

These changes make a big difference. It now takes a lot more 'effort' to get the temp over half way on the gauge and when it does the fan kicks in just before 3/4.

I have also fitted a Poloace chip. Initially I didn't feel any difference so I switched back to the std one but after trying it again I feel it has smoothed out the power and increased it a bit high up in the rev range.

have you got round to fitting that bucket seat? did it come with proper subframes or you gonna hash some up?

Not yet. I have a Mk2 Golf subframe and I did a trial fitting but I don't know if its mk2 fittings or this this subframe but it doesn't fit right. The rear legs are too high. So I'll get them cut down and re-welded so they fit.

Its the cable that is red with a black tracer as shown here.

RevCounterWire.jpg

Run a cable from the coil in the engine compartment through the bulk head and up behind the dash. You will then have to cut the the wire that goes into the plug (give your self a good few inches.) Attach the wire you have fed through to the one you have just cut. Soldering them together then using some heat shrink would be the best solution.

Once you have done that attach the other end of the cable to point 1 on the coil (under the flap). I would recommend you use one of those connectors with the hole in it rather than just wrapping it around the terminal (but I am sure it would work fine :) )

DSC00503.jpg

I traced the Gt loom today on my Mk2 and the rev counter signal wire is connected, via the 20 way plug in the fuse box, to the other end of the red/black wire you cut. I assume the Mk2 counter cannot use this signal. But surely rather than running another wire you can just use the red/black wire where it comes out of the 20 way connector in the engine bay. You could then just soldier to it and run a cable the 2" to the coil. Not forgetting to insulate the other half you cut off. I may be missing something though?

I'm sure there are a few ways that it could be done and to be honest I never investigated any other ways of doing it. It was just easier for me to run a wire from the top of the coil to the dash than trace the wire through the loom.

What you say though I think should work but my brain isn't working too well at the moment :)

I know what you mean, it's just quicker to get on with it sometimes. Oh well as you say it seems like it should work. I'll wire it up in a bit and post the result.

did you do any runs at the pod on sunday?

i saw the car there but not on the strip

Unfortunately I didn't get chance to do any runs. Next time maybe! :)

Got a quote for my new exhaust system that I should be getting at the start of May, But I just need to source a 4 branch first.

Also I have tidied the front speakers in the car as they were beginning to annoy me..

DSC00554.jpg

They aren't great but do the job!

Also I picked up this head the weekend. I'll be looking to get this ported and polished
