I think this is right. Are they Google Ads? They tend to go off what's on the page as well.

I remember having a lecture from the web editor at one of the national newspapers while I was at Uni and he was saying it could be a mixed blessing. Good for revenue raising, but it's a bot so it doesn't think about what it's doing.

His example was a news story about Hurricane Katrina, alongside which Google had brainlessly put an ad saying "Click here for an unforgettable holiday in New Orleans"

They had to cover the ads with a white JPEG.
