Looking at the pump, what would make it fail? There aren't any seals inside as such just a rotory paddle type thing ( technical term, that is) and its held together with the cover and bolted down. I would think it's after the pump ie in the galleries? Or the connection between the block and pump cover?

I read somewhere that the oil filters have a pressure valve in them and the cheaper ones cause problems, maybe this is what's happened?

I just thought id put this thread to sleep and finish what I started.

I tried a genuine oil filter in a last ditch attempt to save it from the scrappers but its made no difference. Oil pressure dropped away to vertually nothing after about 4/5 mile. My mum had just took her last drive in it to the scrap yard. She got £120 for it. I thought that was reasonable.

Shes going to look at a 1.4 seat ibiza later on today. I understand they use the same VW engine. Is there anything to look out for. I know some of the 1.4 engines are made of chocolate. Which ones the rubbish 1.4 engines - By this i mean the one with the camshaft caps built into the camcover. I'm lead to beleive some of these 1.4 engines suffer with oil pump issues. A mate in works 2001 1.4 golf just had a new oil pump for the same reason as my mums polo. Is this a common problem or a one off?

Depends what year Ibiza your looking at? the 96~99 ones use the same engines as the 6N and the 99~02 use the same engines as the 6N2 and all the 1.4's in that range use the shitty camcover design, but for some reason they seem to be more reliable in the Ibiza??

The only difference is in the engine mounting, on the Ibiza it's mounted at the rear onto the subframe and also has a front mount onto another sub-sub frame and a another on the gearbox, where as the Polo uses a single mount on the timimg belt end to the chassis and two on the gearbox???

I have the AUD in my Ibiza and apart from noisey tappets it runs fine

I would say the most of the time or lately for a service! should of had the assistance indication come up on the meter ? If it carries on as an alternative low stress change or a stress evaluate to see what stress it is operating at. Then You may change the meter accordingly.
