Mark3 Clocks FAQ

Featured Replies

All diesel models that I know don't have a rev counter.

For the petrol ones the signal should came from the ECU or not?

The diesel don't have the ECU but the clocks receive signal.

The signal don't came from the same source?

Thanks

The rev counter clocks get their signal from the ECU and I think the hall sender too. If the disel unit isn't ECU controlled this might be why you're having the issues you are.

I didn't realise that the Polo diesel engine didn't use an ECU to control it, though having said that nor does the Seat Terra van which we got over here that uses the same 1W engine as is in your Polo.

Karl.

They use a mechanical rotary Bosch VE diesel pump.

In which pin is the signal from the ECU?

I´m thinking that maybe my needle is not correct, somebody take it off and didn't fit in the right way.

any simple process to setup the needle? Or a earth problem...?

Thanks

For thoughts of you that have early clocks and want to fit into a late car then using a small (thin) peice of wire join pins 8 and 3 together on the back of the clocks.

This is the main ground for the instrument panel and the oil pressure sensor for above 2000RPM.

this means you do not have to chop your loom about and can be removed if you wish to sell the gauges on :)

NB. adding the wire is trick/fidlily but make sure that it does not touch and other pins than above beth method iv found is to wind it on using tweezers.

would it not be better to connect bin 8 to the corresponding pin on the other oil sensor?

thus letting the clocks pick up the one sensor on both pins?

thinking about it, the clocks would receive different signals from each sensor thus producing fake errors on the clocks

slate me if i'm wrong!

Just opened up some clocks, i think it may be easier (for the soldering advanced) to solder a small wire from the terminal pin of 8 to terminal pin 3

answered my own question today.

Connecting pin 8 to pin 9 (both sensor pins) still gives an oil warning.

but connecting pin 3 (earth) to pin 8 works ok!

I solders straight onto the circuit board (not for the faint hearted)

Got some pics.

Sorry to post in faq, but iv just bought some dials for my cl, and everything works except the rev counter. iv plaugged it all in and the couter just doesnt mover at all ? :? Any ideas?

After putting a new clutch in the polo and finally MOTing her I quite fancy a speedo in it! Does anyone know if the one from GSF part no. 76126 will fit a mk3 91 1.3 CL. I rang up and they said it will only fit the earlier polo with round lights? Surely they can't have changed the speedo cable? I just don't fancy forking out 20 odd quid for one from VW.

Cheers

Check the wiring going into the coil. There are 3 wires that go into a plug that plugs into the coil. I think its the one in the middle of the other two that is the feed for the rev counter.

If you're refering to the speedo cable, they are the same between Mark2 and Mark3.

updated broken pic links on my reply

wired mine up properly today, after a "learning experience" with the clocks haha, that beeping is the most annoying sound i have ever heard!

cheers for the FAQ guys :-D

Remove your old speedo and fit it to the new clocks. Its only held in using screws.

before I go and mod my little bros clocks for hi, does bridging 8 to 9 still give the oil warning if it all goes wrong and the oil pressure fails? (I know that by the time the buzzers on the engines toast but Id still like it to work properly)

cheers

I'm 99% sure it will still work as the oil light flashes with the engine off on mine where I have done this.

To be absolutely sure, once you've done it, ground the oil pressure switch wire at the switch on the head (or unplug it, I don't know which way round the switch works) and see if the light/buzzer goes on. That will simulate the oil pressure switch switching, so you can see exactly what will happen.

hi has anyone encounted a problem the temp gauge, fuel gauge, hand brake light oil pressure light indicator lights pretty much all of them apart from main beam lol stop working on the clocks my polo is a cl catalyst but has a 1.3gt lump in and i am using standard clocks and for some reason i have that problem now can anyone help would it b a case of just swaping the clocks or is it further in depth cheers jim

I'm having that same problem with the same car except my fuel gauge works, and handbrake and indicator lights dont stay lit, and speedo isnt working. I'm thinking connections on the back of the clocks are corroded, I'm yet to check them though.

the loom i used doesnt have the second plug for the thermostat so I'm hoping running wires from there to the clocks will sort out the temperature gauge

it also didnt have a plug for the oil pressure sensors so i wired them into a 5 pin plug i swapped from the old loom in front of the fuse box using haynes wiring diagrams for the wire colours

iv got a mk 2 ranger with rev counter so

i could change them to mk 3 clocks

like this but with rev counter not clocks

Just adding to this thread a bit, taking the clocks apart.....................................

Once you have removed the clocks from the dash , this is the view from the back....

SDC12314.jpg

To take the clocks apart you need to remove the six screws as pictured , gently twist out the 2 bulbs at the top and very carefully lift the green ribbon from the casing......................................

SDC12315.jpg

SDC12316.jpg

There you go , obviously at this point if you are swapping to Rev Counter clocks just put your existing speedo and odometer into your new clocks.

SDC12317.jpg

Easy........................................... ;)

Thanks alot Boys!

I have a problem with my clocks - 1992 1.3 polo cl, and i just fitted a rev counter cluster that was removed from a 1989 (i think) G40

The problem is that the temperature warning light is flashing, it doesnt do it on initial startup, but starts flashing after 30 seconds or so. The temperature is definitely fine and swapping in my original cluster cures the problem, so its defo wiring related.

Any ideas?

The Gt/G40 models have a low water level sensor on the coolant bottle , I'm guessing your model doesnt have this and i dont think they have the loom for it either. Cheers Mark
