Well I got bored and the polo being to a state where I was happy for this show season. My mk2 not going to plan I decided another toy was needed after looking around nothing stood out that tempted me then after giving up and starting fiddling with my mk2 polo again this lovely mk2 jetta popped up for sale locally straight away got in contact same day went to view it then bought and picked it up the next day. I was told it had a running fault and thought cant be anything bad as its a 1.3 carbed engine what could go wrong so driving it back get halve way home and it dies so, I pull over pop the bonnet to see if the choke was doing what it was suppose to got the air filter top of and the choke was off so couldn't be that would start with throttle but wouldn't tick over once started and holding revs you could smell it was running rich. So the after getting my old man to recover me home. I had a little play the day after and managed to get it running spot on. Once running again all I could see was smoke coming out the bonnet which turns out it was a hole in the sump. The guy said it leaked but didn't say had a hole in anyway he gave me a sump with the sale so I got to fitting that.

When I got it home

So I decide it needed lowering so the hunt was on for a second hand set as I didn't want to spend loads of money on it, after a week of hunting some came up yesterday and so off I went to pick them up. So today after work I decided to get around to the lowering.

A few before pictures Note the rear suspension dropped down this is why

Rear top mounts just rusted away didn't knock though don't know how style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/lol.gif both side were the same

After shots on the steels

Then went to pick up my alloys and decided to fit them I originally had them on my polo but the sit on this so much better.

Didn't know the fog lights worked style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/lol.gif looks jacked up on the rear at that angle but the tyre all most touches the arch trim.

Future plans are fit the 5 speed and gt cam I bought for the mk2 polo and get a 4 branch and mod to fit. Roll and trim the arches all round then go a little low tint the lights all round just to make it look that more gangsta. Ohh yeah and give it a dam good clean as some. One has machine polished it and done a shit job. All the suspension work was done today such a diffrence to the looks. Needs top mounts all round though.

  • Haha yup u guessed it would of liked to stay naturally aspersted but was just pointless when the 1.8t is more than capable for decent hp figures. The main handling up grade was front and rear arbs kit

. There so nice to drive such a little cruiser

Amen!

Really quiet and roomy inside man.

Yours still fitted with a pooburg carb? Mines is, I had idling issues when it was hot... All sorted now though :)

Yeah still on that wonderful thing. It runs well though gotta change the base gasket as has a tiny leak so the revs will stick a bit and needs fine tuning in but it's in really good condition full service history and been stored in a garage since 2009.

On another note I found some old tax disc in the car and since 2003 it's gone up by £20 and the roads are shit lol

 can't lie, mine runs and goes well but Jesus, they just over complicated the carb..

And nice to know the extra money's gone to good use :(

What's it got on the clock dude?

112000. Done less than 5 thousand in 7 years though some old guy bought it 2nd owner then couldn't drive anymore so was sat in garage. It is a shit design of a carb but I am tempted by a pd conversion. Gunna try and give this beastly engine a few more horse first. Then decide

Jetta friends! lol

looks smart man!

Ah right, looks clean man. Swear it's only old men that own these ahah got mine off a guy selling it for his dad lmao

And PD conversion sounds very interesting!!

Jetta friends! lol

Yeah my mates cool it a grandad car

I think there cool as hell though.

I would like good fuel economy and I know you can fit the diesel out of the mk2 golf then using mk3 diesel stuff u can make a mk2 turbo diesel. But that seems a lot of hassle. Pd conversion would be easier in the sense of everything you need will be with the donor car and I've seen one in a mk1 golf before so it's doable

You can pick up mk3 tdi golfs dirt cheap and they are tuneable, you can build an mtdi out of it and get good power :)

  • Author

That's a fair point I've tuned a few diesil with good results so might have a look into that Got a few bit to do to it before I start getting to excited and go buy a donor car

Plus with a mk3 it's plug and play, and you can just swap over the fuel tank ect.

Only trouble is most of them have a good few miles on them. And not only do people want them as mk2 donors, but t25 peeps snap them up too.

Edit- my mates got a pre PD in his skoda running 130bhp

Yeah that's also a good point didn't know they was plug and play though. Mileage isn't really a problem as the are pretty bullet proof. I would like the pd cause of the tuning abilities. But if the mk3 is all plug and play it will work out cheaper so will proper go Down that route. I bought this as a cheap daily and I can see my self spending a small fortune in the future on it as I have fallen in love with it.

Gunna give it good wash and polish today try and get some of the machine polishing marks out

I believe they are, just need a fuel pump and pedal box I think :/

But don't take my word for it  I know nothing about diesels! Aha

Well loads has happened to this but all under the surface I rolled the rear arches and trimmed the arch trims so I longer get rubbing from the tyres. I then completely removed the exhaust and refitted because who ever did it before done a crap job and it leaked from every join. I then set about setting the timing and fueling and nearly got ot spot on leans out a bit on higher rpms but I will be getting bike carbs after winter. I then set the suspension up a bit better set all the corner weights so equal on each axel as the front is slightly lower to reduce under steer the wieght was higher only down side is the heavy steering but it handles amazing. Fitted a small rev gauge and a limiter just to make sure if dont destroy the engine. The diesle conversion is still on the cards and will proberly happen next year some time.

Update time. So someone on here was selling a gt head gearbox and Newman 272 with vernier pulley so I couldn't resist buying it after a 6 hour drive I returned home with my bargain parts. Couple days later I took the head into work and stripped it down to find out it had been ported and polished to a very high standard so I got it checked to see if it was flat and it was so win win there. So the weekend came and I set about fitting the head and cam. post-118433-0-15020400-1382808348_thumb.

So I got it all timed up and put back together still on the crappy pie burg carb and lovely cast iron goodness they called a manifold. So after a major busy week at work I then decided to start chopping a 4 branch up from a polo to make fit this. They don't sell one for the small block golfs and the polo one needs shortening a lot were it joins the exhaust as the jetta one goes over the subframe. So about 10 hours of chopping grinding welding I got it down wrapped it in some titanium heat wrap to help keep bay temps down then whacked on but of a pain beings it's welded to the loop that goes over the sub frame so you have to remove the front crossmember.

post-118433-0-79572300-1382808623_thumb.

Overall not a bad couple off weeks. I have welded a lambda boss in so i will be fitting my afr gauge tomorrow and can then set fuelling accurately instead of guessing. Then go about setting the timing up. Next weekend will probably involve removing the crappy poo berg to be replaced with some goodness.

Well I planed on getting the guage fitted up early this morning then over slept then thought I would watch moto gp before I get started. So finally arrived at my garage at 12 o'clock I was just gunna mount it in a vent something nice and simple. But then had a great idea to make a switch panel to cover the storage compartment that would also hold two gauges. I already had my rev gauge mounted there in a pod type holder. So I set about making a plate cut the holes out then only to find out that the rev gauge couldn't be mounted like this so I then modified that gauge and made a holder and welded it to the plate. So got both gauge mounted up then got all the wiring hidden and lambda in.

post-118433-0-50401700-1382902381_thumb.

Not bad for a few hours work nice and clean install. Left enough room at the bottom for switches if I choose to add later most likely be for fuel cut off and ignition cut off and possibly a start button just for the cool factor.

Also I'm glad I spent the money on the gauge as I learned that the thing was running super lean after the addition of the head cam and manifold. It also doesn't like to tick over so will be setting it up tomorrow after work.

14.7 isn't it meant to be, where did you get the gauge from mate if you don't mind me asking, I've sceen a few for sale recently lol, nice jetta mate :) are you planning on keeping the 4 speed?

  • Author

Wel if it staid at 14.7 it would be fine but once warm and off fast idle went up to 16-17 so not good at all. I got it of the bay and cost £150 couldn't recommending more it's an aem item and was simple to install. I have already changed the box just never changed the knob. Haven't had time to make a aluminium one yet. Ideally the afr needs to be around the 13 for ultimate performance 14.7 is for emissions it's the best mixture for the cleanest burn.

Ahh good stuff mate.need an Afr gauge soon :)

This will be for sale soon I just don't have the time for it and would like the cash for my other projects it will come on steels and stock engine only mods will be the coilovers and the manifold. O and a 5 speed box on the plus side my mk2 bready will be coming out to play again

Well my dad convinced me to keep this saying its a much nicer car than the mk2 polo and having a better spec it feels much nicer to driver mostly the servo brakes meaning brake upgrades a lot easier and so much more comfortable. So I decided a bit more power was needed and as the clucth was on the way and I wasn't convinced on the 5 speed I had fitted it had a really long 3 and 4 gears. So I went with the option of of doing the 1.4 gt conversion. Some will say that why stick with a small block engine when bigger engine conversions are easy well it's simply I'm restricted to a 1.4 engine size on insurance anything apart from that is free for me to do. So I got my self an bad engine from a late spec mk3 golf and a few days later I pulled the engine out. While it was out I cleaned the years of dirt away and wrapped the wires. Then painted the block and new box and put it in. The abd head then came off and the gt head went on fully ported and polished Newman 272 cam. So it all went together and I thought y not get some bike carbs so a set of zx6r carbs finish the engine of perfect. Will get it all set up and fine tuned on the rollling road in the new year but have set it up nearly spot on so will only need some minor tweaks. For a 1.4 I can't complain at all for the level of torque an the power.

A few pics of it along the way.

Also as can be seen in the last pic I fitted a slim line fan it's a 12 inch item and just fits on the rad. I believe the rad is the same as the mk2/3 polo ones so for anyone looking at upgrading the old one and getting rid of that big heavy fan shroud. This is perfect so much more flow of air without the restricting cowling and when the fan quicks in it pulls double the air through.

Christmas came early a few days back with parcel force delivering some bullet sixties 15x7 for the front 15x8 for the rear. I was looking for some Porsche wheels but there all over 450 and most with strecth tyres which I didn't want for this as I plan on doing a few track days and maybe some passes at the pod. I looked and looked and found nothing I liked if u guys have seen my polo u will see I'm can of steels so got opted for some bullets.

post-118433-0-09803300-1385924863_thumb.

So I needed some tyres to go with em. So I found a cracking deal on some toyo proxes t1rs and went for 205/50's to give no strecth up front and minimal strecth at the rear which I will still need to get the the clearance on the rear arch. Am yet to fit them as the weather is turning shit and don't wanna damage em. A pic of the rear tyres fitted

Good choice on keeping this!

I rather like the 5 Speed in mine, a fan of the long gears, much better for cruising than a Polo box!

And my spoiler will be staying on the car buddy, sorry. Still got the valver you had at that Lupo meet?
