That dash conversion is looking great!! Have been considering doing a 6n2 dash conversion myself.. The amount of detail your've given I can see myself doing the door cards no problem (mine are already off infact as I'm going to have a go at putting electric windows and central locking in this weekend)

Only worry iv got about the conversion is the wiring for the dash..... :help: If yourve got the wiring diagrams you could pass on? Or even better which parts of the loom I need to play about with that would be a great help lol

Thanks mate, I wish I could've gone into more detail with the dash conversion with pics and stuff, but as it was, the weather was turning for the worse at the time and I did most of the wiring in the dark haha, it was done as quick as I could in one day while it was dry, and also the other half was getting a little annoyed with bits of car taking over the house LOL

as far as wiring goes, it is for the most part straight forward, however, every plug bar the one for the blower speed control is different, so try to get the item you need, the plug that plugs into it and 4-6 inch of wire for good measure.

when it comes to wiring them in to the existing 6n loom, it is mostly a case of colour to colour, either solder or connector block, there are a few discrepancies which I will detail in a post a little later on for you :)

Awesome that doesnt sound as mind boggling! I was under the impression it was'nt colour to colour so thats a relief :smirk: lol cheers dude I'll wait to here more on this later on in the mean time il source the pieces and probley get a spare 6n loom so if anythin does go wrong or it takes longer than expected iv still got a back up loom!!!!

Something I forgot to mention and that has just occurred to me is airbag wiring, if your 6n didn't have a passenger airbag, then no worries!

Unless you want the 6n2 airbag wired in, then I've no idea but you'll probably need to wire it in the the ECU and if you don't have an airbag at all it's likely you don't have an airbag ECU either. It might be possible to retrofit one in, I've no idea, there's probably someone who does know if it's possible though?

If you do have a passenger airbag, you'll most likely recognise the connectors are different like nearly every other plug with the conversion, it's just a case of matching wires.

I didn't wire it up straight away so I got an airbag fault logged in the ECU which can only be cleared with software like VAGCOM, luckily I have a friend with it so I could get the fault cleared after I had wired it up but please remember that an airbag fault is an MOT failure so it's best to get it wired in straight away WITH THE BATTERY DISCONNECTED FOR AT LEAST 20 MINS PRIOR.

I'll also stress the importance of making sure all connections are the very best possible, I'm sure you'd hate to go over a bump and a dodgy connection makes the bag pop :/ .

If you don't trust your wiring skills, disable the airbag through the ECU beforehand, this is totally fine MOT wise, mine is disabled because I have a baby car seat in the front sometimes.

Cheers for the heads up on the airbags... Could of been alot of hassle to sort out if id of gotten to eger lol

I dont have a passenger airbag so thats one less thing to worry about.

One quick question I'm now looking at lupo clocks and do you know whether the 6X0 920 900 A, or 6X0920901 will work with the conversion?

  • Author

The 900's will work, as thats what I run, not too sure on the 901's though unfortunately

  • Author

well I've still not got round to fitting the 6n2 rears (boooooooooo :-( )

but I now own and have fitted Dual Cupholder and trim behind it over my lunch break ( YeEAAAAAHHH :D )

Also, one problem that is hanging ovewr my head, is the window switches, I currently don't have anywhere for them, and I don't really fancy buying the drivers side switch to put in the door, I do have the passenger side though, so I'm thinking of locating the 6n switches as shown below, and obviously the drivers side switch at the other side!

How about in the ash tray?

I dont think they'd look out of place on you dash there. It might be worth while seeing if there'll fit in these blank spots if your not completely happy with cutting them into the dash?

I've tried a test fit in those holes polo-trigger, unfortunately they are too big, I could make it work with quite a bit of modification, but I feel the amount of work required to do it that way is equal to the amount required to get them in the doors, vdoubleu makes a good point about the ashtray, while I don't use it for much, it's a little out of reach.

We will see, sooner or later they'll get done :)

This thread has a lot of detail, awesome

Thanks dude! I know how daunting it can be for folks who want to do something, but don't really know how or can't seem to find the info needed!

Today it was dry outside, and maybe even slightly warm... that can only mean one thing....

I put my lights in :D

I followed this guide - http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=9117&sid=b0487261bed6e6df98284af677a78281

so all credit to him, but I have a little bit of info to add

firstly, obligatory before and after shot :)

XSqBLCu.jpg

secondly, in the guide, it's not explicitly stated that you must use washers, and while the image does show a before and after of the trimming work, it doesn't state that the foam backing needs to be removed for a flush fit.

I opted to use washers, because without them, they stuck out really far and don't align properly with the shut lines.

However, I opted to keep the foam backing, because these cars are renowned for leaking, it only makes sense, especially in a critical area like the lights, I will probably go back and remove the foam at some point, and replace it with something thinner that will keep the water out equally as well, as it happens I had nothing to hand today and its sunday :P

anyhow, these images show the massive difference using the washers on the drilled peg make, especially if you keep the foam on.

yKblpRc.jpg

AQ0Xus3.jpg

so there we are, not perfect, but as I said, I will probably go back and use something else so that I can get that hella-flush (see what I did there?) fit.

oh and please excuse the dirty whore, a wash is definately due!

Thermostat time!

x8qMVSb.jpg

wasn't even aware mine was faulty until I saw a post on here with the same issue!

also got some tape for the exhaust as a temporary measure until I get a full piece.

and does anyone know why I have a flat spot/flutter at 3000 rpm, hot or cold?

I've recenley done a throttle body alignment and car is error free vagcom wise.

another day another dollar! or maybe a couple, but anyway...

was missing the plastic surround that the 6n2 has, managed to get one from a GTi with the gaitor with red stitching to match the seats!

TxuXIk8.jpg

it's the little things <3

Glad it's not just me that gets a tad excited at the smallest of mods ;)

coming together man, planning to de badge and wiper delete the rear?

Edited by BoWzER

  • Author

haha yep, got a heatgun for a couple of quid, so going kamikaze on the rubstrips and badges at the weekend, weather permitting.

and probably going to get virtually slapped for this, but I like having a rear wiper, I'm a bit of a clean window freak while driving, and I like visibility, so the wiper will be staying :)

haha.

Just go steady with the heat gun on the paint, have fun getting the bump strip glue off  I hear toffee wheel attachments for the drill are a god send.

As for the rear wiper, I really don't see the use for it tbh, a lot of saloon cars don't have one stock so they can't be that important, I can see it being removed in at some point :spiteful:

So I hate people who bodge things :-(:x

Took the thermostat cover off the change the stat and found a fuckton of silicon in one of the screw holes and round the O-ring/seal.

Turns out the thread had been overtightened had been stripped, meaning I couldn't get it back on.. So now I've got a car with no coolant and a fucked thermostat housing.

Luckily I've got another housing reserved at GSF so will pick that up tommorow and hopefully get it sorted, pisses me right off that a 10-15 minute job has resulted in this mess :(

Wish me luck!

fOi4m7r.jpg

edit: well it went on alright, but broke the clip that secures the rear coolant pipe in, so still leaky and undriveable :(

Edited by R10tz0r

  • Author

Well I got the clip in and the o-ring on, bled the system, poured fresh coolant in and took her for a little drive,

I'm a little bit useless and forgot a clip I had to put on, so got about a mile and half down the road and coolant light came on, pulled over to see my car having a quick wee.

got the bus home, got the clip and plug (which had gone because the clip wasnt in) and went to the car. put it in with some more coolant and now we are rolling like a trooper* :D

*fingers crossed

So my wife-to-be is in hospital ill :sorry:

gives me a bit of time of work while I look after the kids, so rather than watch Jeremey Kyle i decided to get to work on relocating my window switches

removal of the ashtray on 6n2 interior is a royal fucking pain in the backside, for what it is!

6n = push metal down and pull out

6n2 = unscrew lower centre section, including studs at gearstick, unscrew panel that holds heater controls/rear window heater/switches and then lift up so you can undo two small screws to drop it out.

no pics of that process atm, will show what to do when I reinstall it

anyhow, the 6n2 ashtray/12v socket peice has a hole in it, which is near enough the same size as the switch body when trimmed back, allowing a good fit, its a little wider than two switches together as you will see in the pics.

the actual process took me 30 mins or so, including stripping down the unit and rebuilding it

tools used:

T20 bit for dash/centre screws

10mm socket for gear stick studs

Junior Hacksaw to trim a little

Torx bit so small i doesn't have a number to take lid off

Tiny flat head screwdriver to aid disassembly of 12 socket

Stanley Blade to make score lines to snap off plastic, and trimming

No fouling or problems with fitting, it all sits snug as a bug :D

apologies for the dirty car and low quality pics :P

Good work man, look much better there than they would have stuck in the dash somewhere.

I'm still undecided where to locate my switches since doing my centre console, was thinking maybe routing them to doors like on a 6n2.
