Sam's Mk2 Saloon

Featured Replies

So the Breadvan is still out cold and my mk2f wasn't up to scratch being a daily so I sold it pretty shortly after getting it as it was too much work and besides, it was ugly.

After months of looking around and becoming fed up of my lovely lady's pug 106 I stumbled across this gem.

89000 miles on the clock, one owner from new and garaged every night - as well as having some nice 80's fitting extras, such as chrome strips on the bumpers, windows (faded unfortunately), adjustable mirrors, rear headrests and cassette holders in the centre console.

A very happy purchase for a sweet £600.

Paintwork is lovely and clean throughout, little to no scratches on most panels and overall very well preserved.

Because of how remarkably clean this car is, the only planned modifications will be clean and tasteful.

Plans:

Exterior

- Lower a comfortable 60/40

- VW hockenhiem wheels

- GT/S front splitter

- 2.5" straight cut exhaust tip

Engine

- 1.4 ABD

- Sorg airbox if possible

- Newman 262 camshaft

- Twin 40 Weber/Dellortos

- 4-2-1 mani

- Full stainless 2.5" exhaust system with nice burbly back box

- GT or G40 box

- Polished rocker cover √

Handling

- ARB blocks

- Poly bushings √

- Poly engine mounts

- maybe a stage 3 subframe.

- maybe GT rear axle.

- upgraded brakes

I will get more pictures of the stunning interior at some point :)

Engine bay turned out lovely:

1376885_4897263688402_74688340_n.jpg?oh=

after giving it a good wash I found the radiator has a slight leak, will investigate over the weekend but for the time being will just be sure to carry a big bottle of water.

So first priorities:

- fix the leak

- replace chrome strips around the window seals

- respray badges silver

- replace boot lock rubber

nice - have fun.

After a long-ish drive home from Thorpe Park engine loses power and backfires causing a fist size hole in the backbox. Sounds fantastic although I should probably change it at some point. The radiator has been swapped for the one out the breadvan, and I've stuck some redex in the fuel tank to hopefully help it out.

Looking at something along the lines of this:

Hopefully looking at some wheels by the end of this week if they sell in my price range.

nice car man! Are the brakes a straight swap on to the standard carriers or do they need adapters made up?

  • Author

Cheers dude, I've got a couple of sets of adaptors to go with the calipers, they're second hand so I cant say if they were bought that way or machined down to size, I'll take a closer look and see if it's obvious. Discs are from a lupo and are all the same dimensions hub and centre bore etc bar the width and diameter of the disc itself

Edited by samwii

Hmm very nice. Cant wait to see pictures of these on the car, would probably have to look into doing something similar with mine.

Not really got much on the go however slowly been building up a nice collection.

Cleaned up and built my suspension with the 4 pots. required 15mm spacers to allow clearance for the wheels, so unfortunately they wont tuck meaning wider arches, however are looking the bollocks -

10659256_1468588150069986_51820810282765

Also bought some double valve springs (however no longer need them, more on that in a bit) which has left my interior with a nice lil german sticker from a company I've never heard of lol, as well as finally putting in a new head unit and nicer Edge rear speakers, but with the original speaker covers siliconed on for the original look (nice momo steering wheel too)

10646964_1469413656654102_89987487221624

Bought some CBR600 carbs and some cone filters (I still need to mount up), and a lovely manifold made up

More importantly though, I've bought a new engine I'm collecting next weekend from mattieboi6n with the following spec:

-1.4 ABD bottom end

- Ported Polished GT head

- 272 Cam

- Vernier pulley (I believe)

- GT gearbox

- Double valve springs

- lightened flywheel

However I'm going to be rebuilding it with a knife edged crank I've already purchased, with some titanium double valve springs and retainers for good measure. Probably will be a couple of months of not much happening as I will save to get my insurance for this engine before anything else, ideally I want it in christmas time.

For now though just enjoying keeping her clean

So I've been working on this for a bit now, I unfortunately blew her up in November, and have since been slowly but surely making her a fair bit more exciting.

Having been hoarding parts for a good two years I felt it was finally time to crack on. this is what I've been up to.

10659256_1468588150069986_51820810282765

4 Pot calipers on larger 256 x 20 mm Black Diamond Discs with EBC yellowstuff pads, cleaned up and resprayed with Galvanise effect paint, on budget coileys with 15mm spacers up front.

Picked up a engine which damn near fitted my specification from Mattiboi6n;

1.4 ABD bottom end,

1.3 GT head,

272 Newmann camshaft,

double valve springs

10802045_1499141763681291_11759700740920

and started to get to work on stripping and rebuilding the engine to how I wanted it, including a knife edged and balanced crank

10897917_1517763851819082_28045892630417

I started to add a bit of flavour, perhaps a little bit lairy but it's for an idea I've had in mind

I've always loved race cars, however I like subtlety, so to keep the car race pedigree I painted the inside of my tyres...

10980734_1529968280598639_21293721106575

Which I think is pretty mean. I only painted the 'Toyo' and 'proxes' in white on the outer sidewalls as I don't want it to be over the top.

10995923_1529968573931943_35958109462236

I've made my own exhaust using 2" tubing and a heat wrapped 4-2-1 manifold. The exit is a 3" megaphone for a cafe racer motorbike. This is how it looks:

11025795_1535174830077984_37165224053023

and that is all! So I've been a busy bunny, she's booked in with Austec Racing on the 6th of march for her initial fire up and tune! Videos shall be posted as and when :)

Awesome, nice to see a conversion that isn't 16v :D

Awesome, nice to see a conversion that isn't 16v :D

Yeah man, I didn't want a 16 valve because I think that it looks a bit too obvious if that makes sense, where's I wanted to make it look 'suped up' rather than 'swapped'... kinda doesn't make sense but it does in my mind haha. Hot rod is what I'm going for I suppose.

anyways; I test fitted the exhaust and.. well it didn't fit. So today has been getting sun burnt with welding and completely redoing the lot. fits snug now and the 3" exit looks mean in my opinion

So as always things get held up because fuckups occur - was close to completion but like a dick I put the gearbox oil in the inspection hole, so new clutch was needed, whipped the engine out, put the new one in - now booked for the 13th april. bummer.

either way though, it's given me time to leisurely crack on.

So the car's now roadworthy, I took her to the dyno however she's still not making the power I'm hoping for - around 65 at the wheels - should be more like 85/90 I would have thought.

11009180_1564793563782777_40921615435165

11219001_1564794453782688_42933124329613

The AFR was too lean though on wide open throttle and changing the jets from 150 to 165 made very little difference to the AFR - so it was suspected to be an airleak somewhere.

in the mean time though I purchased an AFR gauge and better clips to secure the carbs. The AFR gauge is reading 14.7/14.8 now, however I can't tell if this is a difference in instruments or if securing the carbs with better clips has fixed a leak - to give you an idea, they were falling off when I went over a big enough bump!

11203009_1564792723782861_22914282026717

It does feel a little more punchy now it's reading 14.7/14.8 however I understand really you should be in low 14's to be making power - so I have purchased a stage two carb kit from DynoJet, with adjustable needles, stiffer springs and the likes - hopefully allowing me to richen it up the necessary amount.

In the mean time, I've been enjoying driving her again - however the wheel suspension setup is pretty harsh and proving to be incredibly twitchy. The brakes are great but she's a little bit too keen to turn, and with the road conditions near me it's less than ideal.

Also, I've mounted a NACA duct in the bonnet so I can have Ram Air some point down the line, however since she's running lean as it is at them moment I have it disconnected.

11268940_1564790683783065_56450317876529

SO that's where I am at. Awaiting the stage 2 kit to proceed, plus bought an ally header and radiator to help keep things cool.

How have I only just seen this thread!!

That looks sooo cool! :)

Damn, boy!

thats a really poor bhp for the work done, should be alot higher. lookforward to seeing what it can do once adjusted. top build by the way

65bhp equates to about 85 at the flywheel?? So I would have thought it should be 100-110bhp at the fly.

This might sound daft but is the throttle being opened fully when you put the pedal to the floor?

That's exactly what I have thought - I have been hoping to get around 130bhp at the fly which I guess is around 100 or so at the wheels - few bits on their way which will hopefully sort this issue out. Thanks though man.

I must admit - I don't know if it is or not.

I've used the same method of attaching the cable to the pedal and carbs as other's on the forum so I don't see why I wouldn't be - I'd have to figure out a way of seeing if it is or not; perhaps remove the carb and see where abouts the cable ends up in relation to full throttle and then test it on the car.

It currently doesn't have the Vernier Pulley attached so the timing isn't spot on however I doubt that would make such a big difference.

Either way, there's a bit of jiggery pokery to do as she's certainly not running to her full potential, and I'm very much looking forward to when she is

You can do it on the car it's how I did mine. Get someone to put the pedal to the floor and then see if you can turn the throttle wheel any further with your finger. If Its happened to a few people :)

So I have a week off and decided to get on with some bits - finally decided to sort out my cooling and hoses - I've spent the last 1000 miles driving with the header tank just kinda sitting nestled in the engine bay not attached to anything. Also bought myself a nice shiny radiator (50mm core I believe) which needed some brackets made up to mount. My fabricating skills aren't exactly top notch however it is nice and secure.

1517474_1564792660449534_505282947729234

nice new header tank

all mounted and hosed up

11709743_1586199878308812_52348389876571

another angle - just have to mount the coil a little bit further back in the bay and it's all good. also made a hose to go to the NACA duct in the bonnet for fresh air

bought this gem from germany:

11705211_1585544165041050_44986229214630

and on the car mocked up:

11214071_1585544421707691_30267543159693

so on my to do list for the remainder of my holiday:

- replace front wheel bearing

- mount kamie splitter

- wire up rev counter

- wire up rev limiter

- get the carbs running right

how much for the kamei splitter if you don't mind me asking? do you have plans for a full kit?

Will everything be colour coded with the kit or staying black?
