04 Polo rear drum brakes grinding

Hi, I'm new to this club and have very recently aquired my 54 reg Polo. My concern is a grinding noise that comes from the rear drum brakes. This noise was only when I first drove it in the morning and would stop after the first 3-4 stops. Now the noise seems to be happening more regularly and mainly at slower speeds when braking lightly.

It sounds unsettling, like the metal to metal of worn out shoes but I don't expect it to be worn shoes as the car has only 28,000 miles, plus the fact that it's normal and silent above 10 MPH. The previous owner said he noticed the problem in the past and had the VW dealer check it out. They found nothing wrong and cleaned out the drums and the problem went away, but returned after a couple weeks (this was about 3 years / 5,000 miles ago. I trust this information as the previous owner is a close relative that has owned the car since almost new).

I was fairly reassured that VW service had a look and gave it the all clear, but since this grinding noise is so unnerving I thought I'd post about it and see if anyone can relate to this problem. I would hate to ignore it and have it become expensive due to neglect. Any replies or advise would be greatly appreciated.
