mk2 polo clocks / wiring disaster

my polo failed its MOT due to the 'tell-tail' light for the high beams not working, I have taken my clocks out and checked with another set I had laying about but still the same problem, although when I turn the ignition on in the car the oil light flashes (pretty standard I have been told) but when I pull the stork to turn the lights to high beam the light goes out and stays out until I let go of the high beam stork, can someone tell me what is wrong, or direct me to a wiring diagram where I can get this information
