Absolutely laughed my head off after reading that mate. Genius!

Haha, cheers man! :lol:Good to see people showing interest ! :)

Great thread and looks much better. Would look good if you put the plate back on, in my opinion.

Nice one dude  Yeah I agree, front end is starting to look the part! Mmmhhh, I was quite torn between leaving it off or getting 'German style' pressed metal plates. But I think I'm gonna take your side on this one and go with the pressed plates !

Ah another bog man on this good to see ha what part of the hood u from ha headlights look d j.o.b

Ah there seems to be a few of us anyway  I'm from Sligo, yourself ? Yeah they really help transform the front end ! no more manky, cloudy, yellow headlights ! :D

Well, I've got nothing much done in the past two days. Its all this f**king 'New Years' sh*te.

Rang up the fellas to order my coilovers .. closed .. prowled down to VW to order my front splitter and indicators .. closed .. went over to the shop to get a box of fags ..

F**KING CLOSED!

Looks like i'm just going to have to wait :-o

In the mean-time, to entertain myself, I made my way up to Halfrauds (of course the thieves would be open) and picked up a Haynes manual. I cant remember the last time i've read a book .. but you better believe this baby is getting read cover to cover

IMG_20140101_180612_zpsg3fjxbpd.jpg

So my plan, while I wait for my bits and pieces to arrive, is to give the car a good service and just make sure shes running as smooth as possible.

Will be picking up my wheels on friday, but I'm going to wait til' I have the coilovers installed to fit them .. as I think they'll look silly as f**k without the car being lowered

As for tires .. I'm gonna go stretchy stretchy. Will be ordering these online ASAP !

I've got so much plans to be honest i'd bore the lot of ye going through them hah , so i'l just leave it with that for now!

Will update with progress when it happens ! :D

Honestly lad the buffers from halfords aren't worth a fart, you'd be best going onto cleancar.ie, I got a rotary buffer from them and it's the best thing I've ever bought, serious job, I would highly

  • god knows how you'd break the speaker grill, they're quite tough! That window switch is in good condition especially if it works, you'll find out what I mean when the windows stick open when it snows

  • Welcome along Tidy base, older cars will always have few wear and tear bits that need doing but if it's good otherwise I wouldn't worry too much just do them as you go along

Kildare ha ye seems to b a few alri

Go on then lad spill the beans ;) what wheels are you going for?

  • Author

Ahhh now  , cant be giving away too much .. sure i'll be picking them up Friday, so you don't have to wait too long to see 'em

Lets just say .. they're 15's, I think they'll suit the car quite well, the rears are chunky, and i don't think id have a problem eatin' my dinner off them ..

  • Author

So just a small update ..

Was pulled there on the way home by the gards for driving with no plates .. I was kinda asking for it haha

Got a firm telling off, but managed to get away with it :D

So i'm going to scrap the idea of running with no plate on the front and just get some pressed metal ones.

Also managed to find a fella who is selling a set of 'JOM Bluelines', a year old, for practically nothing .. so if i buy them it will be saving me quite a few quid! :D

Now .. aside from checking that they are in good working order and half decent condition .. I have done quite a bit of research on these coilovers, and have come to a conclusion..

They are s**t.

But, saying this, buying them will be saving me upwards of €375 .. so I think i'll go with that

Will be picking up my wheels tomorrow and am ordering my tires now so hopefully will have everything by mid next week !

Joms are 270 new in MCG mate I had them and I will agree they are SHITE, very uncomfortable but hey oh most coils are :)

  • Author

Yeah the JOMs are fairly budget. I had my sights on a set of FK Highsports which were retailing at roughly £360 as they go lower on the rear (95mm) than the JOMs (75mm). Buuuuut, I think I may have a trick up my sleave to eliminate any arch gap that there may be running the JOMs .. anyway only time will tell

But yeah, I think I'm gonna go with the set of JOMs as they'll save me a bomb! :D

Truth , sure if your winding any coilover down to the bottom your just asking for shite ride quality .. Form over function and all that shite yada yada yadaa

good box of economy fags! only messing lad :L iv ta-tecnik coil overs there very comfortable hey!

Hahah, ohh the finest  .. A comfortable coilover? .. my lord .. this is unheard of! :shok: Ahno , sure i'll just keep my fingers crossed that all these coilover connoisseurs are talking out there holes, and that the JOMs will be like driving on motherf**king cloudsss :smirk:

.. fat chance though

I used to run FK AK's coilovers which are basically the same as JOM and now I run KW Variant 1 Inox and to be honest, they feel pretty similar comfort wise. As long as you copper grease them properly, they should be fine.

They all ride the same wound down ha and joms are only like 200 quid New lad and same with fks but from what I told fks do go bit lower

Yeah, sure once you wind it down past a certain point no coilover is gonna be comfortable  , i''l make sure I do ! , cheers for the tip :D

Truth , Yeah the FK highsports I was looking at went down 90 mm on the rears as opposed to 75 mm on the rears for the JOMs. Isnt as low as i'd hoped but il work around it

Alright, I've got good news.. and bad news. :disgust:

The bad news first.

While driving the car today I noticed a knocking noise was coming from the engine, which progressively got worse the more I drove. The engine is also sounding very unusual , very deep noise out of her, kinda sounds like a diesel and is awful 'chuggy'. I think that there is a leak in the exhaust system aswell, somewhere near the manifold. So have her booked into the garage for early next week to have a service and a thorough look-over. Hopefully it wont be anything big , dont have that much cash to be throwing about.

And now .. the good news .

Today I picked up my new wheels!! :unibrow:

bbs1_zps5a5ffdbd.jpg

Again sorry for the bad picture quality, my phone camera really does not like incandescent light -.-

Iv gone for a set of 15" BBS RS Reps , 7j front and 8j rears.

I chose the BBS RS as I've always loved the way they look, deep and classy  !!

Picked them up new for €499 from Pro-Parts in Dublin .. Clicky

Although the wheels didnt come with the BBS sticker on the centre caps(as they are reps),I had already asked about this and ordered a set off ebay, now thats what you call thinking ahead :wink:Clicky

Stickers are nice , are a perfect fit. I think the carbon fiber finish on the background really makes them stand out !

Anyway , I also managed to get my front splitter and German style pressed plates ordered today. Both are due to arrive on Tuesday next week. Also Asked, when I was down at VW, how much two indicator inclosures would be ...

€89 F**KING EURO !?!

Those boys down there are seriously taking the piss, bunch of f**king fanny bandits.

Picked up a piece of wood for the floor in my boot and a bit of yellow light tint also, fogs are going yellow :D

Progress unfortunatly will be slowing slightly in the next few days as college exams are coming up, but il try my best to get as much done as I can.

Will update soon, cheers for looking :D

Cheers man ! , I don't know to be honest, didn't really get a chance to take a look at it today. Will take a look tomorrow, but as I said I have her booked into the garage on Tuesday for a service, so I might just leave it to the boys

Good to hear ! :D

Yeah man do ! , I still got quite a bit to do, so will have loads more progress updates !

So just a small update ..

2014 hadn't really gotten off to a good start with the knocking noises coming from the engine .. and now its also accompanied by a horribly irritating vibration from one of the 6X9s and the death of the alternator in my daily motor .. (which is only going to be my daily motor 'til this baby is built) .. meaning more f**king money is coming out of my pocket. I kinda expect Halfrauds to replace my 6X9 free of charge though, as it is not really my fault its making that stupid f**king vibration.

On the brightside, today I managed to find the time to fit the wooden base in my boot and finally tidy up the wiring !

IMG_20140104_162101_zps71rac7xt.jpg

I ran the majority of wires for the amp and sub up though the carpet, still need to bring a few cable ties into the equation to keep everything secure but that'll only be a 5 minute job

IMG_20140104_185053_zpsdwf9bx6y.jpg

IMG_20140104_185325_zpsdltd1rem.jpg

IMG_20140104_185831_zpslqt2xq7a.jpg

As for the speaker wire for the 6X9s , I ran this underneath the carpet and up through the sidewall carpet.

IMG_20140104_185343_zpsu3uwjbqh.jpg

IMG_20140104_185245_zpsfs9emav9.jpg

I know its not the best piece of handy work but f**kit , she'll do :D Its alot tidyer than it was before anyway !

Will get a picture of it all tomorrow when its bright, was working in the dark today and my camera wasn't able to pick up a good quality picture of the entire boot !

Heading up to Halfrauds tomorrow aswell to try and get this speaker predicament resolved. Fingers crossed they can sort me out :smoke::good:

Had some spare time tonight so I decided to tint the ol' fogs yellow

So out came the fogs and the hairdryer and I got crackin'..

IMG_20140105_202317_zpsjnapzoom.jpg

One down , one to go! :D

IMG_20140105_203808_zpszh3nub04.jpg

And boom !

IMG_20140105_204858_zpsckiu5ed1.jpg

Pretty shotty job, I know. Again it looks like I cut it with my elbows .. I'm pretty sure most peoples mothers good lingerie wouldnt have as many frills ..

But behind the foglight grill .. they look the job :D

Again it was dark when I did this, so I wasnt able to get a good snap of them on the car. Will get a half decent photo of them and the boot tomorrow

Oh yeah .. I also went up to Halfrauds about my dodgy speaker .. turns out I made the f**king simplest mistake .. I wired the positive and negative speaker wires in the wrong terminals on the amp ..

:doubt: Halfrauds 1 - Me 0

Dropped the car into the garage this morning to get a good thorough look over and a service !

Got a bit of feedback this afternoon, luckily the 'knocking noise' I thought was coming from the engine.. was actually one of the wheel bearings, which needs replacing ... good diagnosis on my be-half... :doubt: Also the back box is fucked and the exhaust is blown out at the front near the manifold.

Other than that shes mechanically graaaand! :D

Tomorrow the boys are gonna go over the electrics, just to make sure everything's working as it should be. If everything's A-OK i'll be taking her home :D .. I've missed the bitch :cray:

Anyway, while she was away I collected a few goodies for her!

Pressed metal plates

Picked these up from FK performance, cost me €35, not a bad price.. and they are ALOT nicer looking than the standard plates.

IMG_20140107_180425_zpsbfumqcgv.jpg

IMG_20140107_181523_zpsygtxc7nm.jpg

The fella down at FK also gave me these sticker 'badges' for the plates. He threw them in for free, so I wasn't complaining . Although i'm not quite sure whether to put them on or not .. hmm ... what do ye reckon ? They could look nice .. they're only stickers aswel, so if I don't like the look of them I could always just peel them off.

IMG_20140107_181408_zpsaxyo7toc.jpg

Gti Front Splitter

Fianlly picked up my front splitter from VW. This is one piece I cant wait to fit, its going to be the icing on the cake for the front end!! :D .

IMG_20140107_181845_zpsmurgl4qp.jpg

IMG_20140107_181702_zps9i5lmibu.jpg

So plans are going to go ahead to put the coilovers in sometime this weekend. Have college exams tomorrow but am then off then til next week .. so it might even be done before the weekend :spiteful: Just have to get my hands on some spring clamps and we'll be all set!

Tires also arrived today.. 165/50/15's for the fronts and 185/45/15's for the rears. so there'll be a wee bit of stretch going' on :spiteful:.

Will be slappin' them on the wheels ASAP !

Edited by Ganjasaurus

Coming along nice! The Splitter and the plates will make a hell of a difference :) i'd leave the stickers off if i were you though

Thanks :D , still have quite a bit to do yet, loads more ideas in store though  Yeah I think so too, i'll be fitting them tomorrow so i'll throw up a pic if I get the chance !

You reckon? .. Mmh I'd say they might look a bit tacky. Plus i'd also probably be pulled over more often with them on .. and I don't want that :retard: haha

Anywayyy, gonna go get the tires put on my wheels tomorrow and pick up some spring clamps from Halfrauds. Tempted to pick up a machine buffer when i'm up there too ! :spiteful:

Will be putting the coilovers in on Friday if everything goes to plan. As the Jom's only go down 75mm on the rears i'm going to remove the helper springs on the back shocks to ensure I get an equal drop :D

Also, unfortunatly the fella i'm buying the coilovers off doesnt have the height adjustment tool, so fingers crossed hes greased them enough and the rings haven't seized with all the dirt and shit.

Anyone have any tips of handy ways to adjust the height rings without the tool before I go mad with the sledgehammer again ?

Honestly lad the buffers from halfords aren't worth a fart, you'd be best going onto cleancar.ie, I got a rotary buffer from them and it's the best thing I've ever bought, serious job, I would highly recommend them :)

As po-low-grey said, you are better off with a proper machine polisher, I recommend the site as well.

Cheers lads , I'll take a look at clearcar.ie as a machiene buffer is gonna be an essential :D !

Just a quick update ..

So fitted the plates and splitter today. I could of swore I took a photo of the front of the car but it seems to have vanished. :-( Will put one up tomorrow !

Splitter unexpectedly was a bit of a bitch to fit .. this corner just would not go in !!

IMG_20140109_081616_zpslobyrxmq.jpg

it was as if the splitter was a fraction too small :x but after bending the clip with a pliers I managed to get it to slot in !! :D

Also replaced the worn gear knob and gaitor with a slightly less worn gearknob and a black leather gaitor !

Old

IMG_20140109_075557_zpsh5arbb2y.jpg

New

New

IMG_20140109_080811_zps7oke30gu.jpg

I know the 'new' gearknob isn't in the best of condition but at least you can see the numbered gear positions :D

Also as promised a picture of the boot. I know its not amazing, but at least its tidy

IMG_20140109_082551_zpsq0f2dhd3.jpg

Anyway, picked up the spring compressers and got the tires put on the wheels today, so gonna go ahead with putting in the coilovers tomorrow.. also I managed to get a height adjuster tool for the Joms off a lad I know with a kit so things will be alot easier !

Il post up a few pics up tomorrow of the work .. and the outcome :spiteful:

Leave ye with this for now, pic of the ice on the bonnet of the car last night .. kinda looks like the moon :retard:

Alright, so I haven't got much time for updates in the past few days with exams and shit :-(

.. but the good news is .. the coilovers are in :spiteful: shes finally sittin' pretty !

Unfortunatly didn't get too many photos of fitting the coilovers .. kinda got lost in the work  but still managed to get a few.

How she was sitting on the stock suspension before we started

IMG_20140110_110953_zpsjvtghfth.jpg

Rear shock with helper spring removed

Greasing the threads , was well needed !

IMG_20140111_183921_zps7h7lecie.jpg

BBS all wrapped up in their new tires :D

Unfortunatly only got pics of the fronts , I have no idea why I took none of the rears -_-

IMG_20140111_164611_zpsxoqzzu4v.jpg

IMG_20140111_164749_zpsengcgdi5.jpg

How the rears were sitting when we got them fitted , left a big enough gap as it will be needed for future plans

A nice bit of 'splitter on ground' action as we pulled her out of the garage :spiteful:

IMG_20140111_203029_zpsl17otl3c.jpg

And this is how shes sitting now , took these photos only about an hour ago :D

IMG_20140113_111657_zpskebxuey4.jpg

IMG_20140113_111733_zpsuicvfoap.jpg

So shes looking alot better, but I'm not 100% happy with the stance  So gonna raise up the front a wee bit and pick up some spacers to hopefully fatten up the stance 8)

Over the next few days I'm gonna try sort out all the small bits and pieces, removing stickers, changing disc holder, etc.

Also still need to fit my new tailgate and wing, but that will be a job for another day
