Just a quick question. I'd like to change my gearbox oil but am getting conflicting advice:

Manuals/forums say 75w90 and I have had recommendations to use 75w80.

Obviously I don't want to use the wrong oil! - is there a massive difference between 90 and 80?

My car is a 1.6 aee 6n 1998 - no idea of the gearbox code (is it easy to find out without crawling underneath?)

Original vw manual gearbox oil is SAE 75W90.
Your gearbox will thank you when you fill in 2,7 liters of that oil.

So three 1L bottles of G 060 726 A2 and you'll be fine and most of all on the safe side.

VW doesn't offer another oil for a manual polo gearbox.

I did the same after the repair of my AEE / gearbox DKE 2 1/2 years ago, as you can see here:

You dont really need VW stuff I'm guessing its expensive. I just use Comma or any other decent brand.

The fill and drain plugs are a little odd though, you may need mole grips.

Oh and gearbox code is in boot, underneath the carpet on a sticker.

it should start with an E or a D - mine was EQW or EQY.

dont use mole grips. get the proper 17mm hex plug coss thay are tight if thay have never bean out befor. or you can use a wheel bolt and a 17mm spanner to take the plug out

This is a much better idea - I only use mole grips as I've never found a plug remover tool big enough :(

anyone know why vw swapped from the 80/90 grade oil used in the early 085 boxes used in the mk2f and earlier polos? I'm sure mikeymk had some ideas about the oil being half the reason 6n onwards, boxes were prone to failing.

I've been destroying gearboxes for ages, had a nightmare. This was with mineral 80w/90 and semi 75w/90, both are mineral oils and both are thick oils, and smell bad. Three gearboxes have lasted me less than a day, consistent hard use going up and down the gears was one of the big problems.

When I put this gearbox together recently I've now used 75w synthetic. Just 75w. It's alarmingly thin, doesn't smell much. Hammered the hell out of the gearbox and it's still the best it's ever been.

I wouldn't advise buying a bottle with the number 90 on the label. I managed to fill this gearbox up with Fuchs Titan 75w fully synth for thirty quid. So far, it's looking like the extra was well worth spending.

I think the problem is, minerals and semis tend to clog up faster and you never know what percentage of a semi is synthetic and what percentage is mineral...

Therefore, in a normal box or engine, regular oil changes with a semi synthetic is fine. However, in a 085 made of chocolate I suppose I would agree with you - fully synthetic probably is wiser. As for the smell - all gear oil STINKS lol.

Mikey - which did you use? Black bottle or grey bottle?

The black is fuchs titan but they all say 75w90... the grey bottle is fuchs titan sintofluid?

Semi synthetic oil is not a mixture of mineral and synthetic. It is mineral. Only fully synthetic is synthetic. And fully synthetic hardly smells at all.

I used Fuchs Titan Sintofluid, not from VW but I'm the squared pearl silver bottle. 75w straight.

I killed at least four gearboxes where each had brand new virgin oil. Two hadn't been out the bottle a day.

The problem was almost certainly that the thicker oils can't keep up, they're chased/squeezed out the bearing races before they can get back in.

Yep, that's the one. This stuff has transformed my confidence in the 6n's 085 gearbox, it generally feels better to use, too.

My current one has seen better days, I've kept it going with one new bearing, and yet it's behaving like, and feels like, the best unit I've ever had on there.

Hello sorry to bring na old thread , but is this oil the same as VW Gearbox oil G51SAE 75W-90 (Synthetic oil) 4) specified for the CWX gear box?
