So the paint is looking really rough and I've got a few rust spots

Has anyone done a respray with rattle cans to any kind of good standard? How much prep work is involved?

Hi sorry to leech onto your topic but I want to do the same thing as you. Well pretty much but with a cheap paint gun instead.

You could fork out about £15 - £30 for a spray gun off eBay and then get a 2L tin of paint for about £20 - £40 (which states that would be enough to do a whole car) but obviously your'd want to get lacquer aswell to protect your paint)

I wanna know whats in the prep work the same as you and whether us novices can get OK finishes doing all the work are selfs if we take it easy, prep it up to a good standard and gradually do the spraying in layers

I used to work at a paint suppliers so I can get ancillaries and cheap paint. But I dont think I want to use a compressor because hassle!

If your rattle canning it matte colours are the safest choices ofcource but I donno what end result your aiming for....

prep work is 90% of the job, do it well you'll get a good finish. watch some vids on utube to get the right technique

Graffiti paint is where it's at for cheap little prep needed just key the pair repair stuff where needs it and spray. Check graff City Montana black cans are what u need there 3.50 or so 400ml cans probaly take 20 to do a car for under 100 including prep materials

its just as cheap if you have a compressor,t here are a couple half decent paint suppliers online that do kits enough to paint and prime 2 cars and come with the spray gun for under £150 in cellulose, i have also done alot of research on this at various times as my cra needs a new paint job, but i dont fancy paying 5x the cars value for one.

I would say celly is the most forgiving paint for a newbie, plus its cheap and very simple, 50/50 ratio with thinners and that it, you dont need a lacquer because you cna just cut it back and buff it up really nice, especially if you use high gloss thinners.

And 2k is nasty stuff, and 1k is hard to work with apparently.

if your going to do it with spray cans, don't buy the cheap ones from the shop because the spray pattern and paint quality is really bad, if you go and get some cans or even get some custom colours mixed from your local auto paint suppliers you will know the different as soon as your press the nozzle.

I was thinking vw's new ish chocolate brown metallic or maybe silver because logbook.

Id probably have to do it abit at a time as the car is used for work but I'm thinking about doing this!

Spray cans for Spray gun? if you have a compressor it will probably cost about £40 more than spray cans, but you will get like 5l of paint, 5l of primer amd 10l of thinners, thats enough to do 2 polos inside and out and engine bay twice, so leaves plenty if you get it wrong, plus it will look alot nicer and last alot longer, plus its always nice to have excess paint to repair parts and paint new parts or whatever you want

Make sure you have a decent size compressor that doesn't run out every 30 seconds and takes 5 mins to re charge

Like stated above u do really need a big compressor with a big tank to be able to sustain the pressure as the small ones run out then re fill the tank where the big ones get to a pressure then refill before running out. When doing it with a. Gun though u gunna spend a lot more time doing bodywork to make sure the paint will stick. With graffiti paint it will stick no matter what

If however you're looking to use paint cans and with this talk of graffiti paint i feel i should share this, if you can then get the paint put into female cans and buy some of these http://www.writersbench.co.uk/graffiti-tips/transversal-cap.aspx They're meant to give a spray more like the shape of a paint gun.

You can also get adaptors for male paint cans http://www.ebay.com/itm/SEKT-CAP-ADAPTOR-PINK-ADAPTOR-FOR-MALE-VALVE-SPRAY-PAINT-/331047374764?pt=UK_Crafts_DrawingSupplies_EH&hash=item4d13f60fac but i haven't used one so can't say how good they are at sealing the pressure.

yeah if you do use spray cans, most definitely change the nozzles/caps like the first link joe420 sent, any decent paint supplier will use them if not better ones on there spray cans and they are brilliant compared to a branded or generic can off the shelf.

Its very unusual but very nice.

I reckon it cost me just shy of £100 for my re spray (this included paint, panel wipe, wet and dry, masking paper and tape, masks etc).

It's deffo doable if you put a little time into the prep, a lot of people ask me how much the wrap for my car costs and are quite shocked when told I painted it out of rattle cans.

Nice one, looks good, personally though if you have the time and equipment its worth doing it with a spray gun, and you will have plenty enough paint to paint another car or keep trying until you get your polo how you like it

Thinking about using a spray gun, i was looking for a thread the other day in wich the guy used a tyre for the air supply to the spray gun, i imagine you'd need a fair few tyres for a whole car. I couldn't find the thread to see the setup though. From a bit of looking i found this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Truck-Airline-Tire-Tyre-Inflator-Valve-Connector-Air-Chuck-Brass-8MM-Clip-On-/360851750436?pt=UK_Air_Tools_and_Compressors&hash=item540470be24 wich might work as an adaptor for the airline but it doesn't specify whether it has a valve inside that only allows the air to go one way. If any one knows how to connect up a tyre for air supply please say because i'm looking to do it for small repairs.
