I have a 2006 9N 1.4 Polo. A couple of months ago, after some engine running problems, sudden loss of power, difficult to re-start. I had an error on the engine speed sensor (16706, G85) and misfire on cylinder 3. I replaced all the coils, spark plugs and the crank sensor (very awkward job).

It has been fine since then, however this week I have had the same symptoms once again. Again there is a error on the crank sensor (code 16706), but no misfire. I doubt the sensor has gone already, so I am thinking either wiring fault or ECU.

Does anyone have a ECU wiring diagram that shows the pin numbers I should be testing for continuity between the crank sensor and ECU? Or any other ideas?

Fantastic, thanks a lot. I've checked the wiring all seems to be as expected, earth too. I am thinking that the ECU is at fault, but I will replace the crank sensor again, this time with a VW part, just in case and see if that cures it before looking at swapping the ECU.

If you have a multimeter? you can do some basic tests, disconnect the sensor and between pins 1 & 3 with the igniton ON you should have a minimum of 4.5Volts then with it connected between pins 1 & 2 as you crank the engine over you should have a pulsing voltage

Sorry to revive and old thread but have been forever trying to fix my car, or so it feels. 1.4 tdi AMF engine code 2004 , engine rough at idle, difficult to start, cuts out . 16706/P0322/000802 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal is the error that keeps coming up. Naturally replaced sensor, twice even to make sure , still no difference. Traced the wiring back to the ECU and found that 1,2,3 run into top connector into the ECU. 1 was loose /broken so soldered back on, but 2 and 3 have been joined together for some reason by someone before me? That doesn't look right so just wondering if someone knows where each one is supposed to go with perhaps a diagram. Any help is appreciated.
