Boot light doesnt work

I have a 2004 Polo Dune. This afternoon i was digging around in the boot and found that the previous owner had taped over the bootlight and added some LEDs onto it, but had disconnected the boot light before selling. I plugged it back in and both boot light and LEDs worked when the boot was open and stopped working when boot closed as expected. However after a few minutes they stopped working altogether. And when plugged in with LEDs also attached, the bot wouldn't open. I have unnattached the LEDs and the boot now works again (thank god) but the boot light doesn't work at all. I have tested both the light and the LEDs with a battery and they both work. How should i go about fixing the boot light and possibly how to get the LEDs to work?
