Afh injection wiring

Featured Replies

So firstly hello to everyone, I've been lurking around for a while trying to get as much info as possibly on this subject, but it's about time I started asking my own questions!

So unhelpful to myself I have aquired a late spec loom and none of the stuff I have read is relevant now (sod's law)!!

But the principles are the same I would imagine? Need power to the fusebox/relay plate to supply the ecu with power and from there that sends what it needs to do to the engine (really simplistic way of saying it lol)

The fuel pump however I am not 100% on, as in the mk3 it is wired how it is, so am I just taking that and bypassing it so it runs on the afh fusebox, therefore making the original relay/fuse redundant?

Here's a few pics of what I have 99% sure I have it all but need to lay it all out and double check

The coloured plugs on the relay plate go through to the bay, but not all of them do? Anyone shed any light on this aswell, as I'm not sure wether I need them all cos they disappear behind the heater motor/box before coming through the bulkhead.

Anyway sorry for babbling and if I put it in the wrong section I do apologise!

Any help is greatly appreciated

Just had it out this is what I have,

Missing the pink brown and blue as you can see, I'm assuming these don't go through to the bay?

On this one I'm missing the wiring that goes to the left of the '19' relay, I remember the relay having '53' on it, but there's no sign of the plug for it on the loom I got today, so I'm guessing it's not part of the same loom, but not sure where it would go in relation to it's route to wherever it's other end is?

This plug is from the bay to the right of the 3 block connectors near the stat housing, I don't have the other plug to this, which I think I'm going to need, but can't figure out what it does as I seem to have all the plugs for the ancillaries/ecu and back into the car bar the ones mentioned above. Anyone have any clue?

Thanks again

the engine bay plug is for an early engine loom, so you will need either another engine loom or chop off either end of another loom( so an ealry engine loom side plug or a late bay side plug) from a scrap yard etc. the pins should fit so you would literaly be swapping the plastic parts.

the missing plugs ate the fusebox i think would go to the dash loom and the wiring going to the rear.

is this going into an early car? so 86c etc? if so i would personally split the loom open and remove everything that isnt needed, and then add it to the existing loom in the car. otherwise you would end up with alot of extra wiring that you wont neeed and never use.

if its going into a 6n then I'm assuming you have n early one and a late loom? if so then go back and get therest of the car loom and swap the whole lot over. its easier this way.

Cheers for the reply, it's going in an 86c and yeah was planning on trimming what I don't need but for now laying it out is easier for me to imagine where it goes in the 6n if you get me.

I have the wiring for the ecu and engine which is obviously the main bit, and that interior bit will somewhere power the fuel pump, so I don't understand why I need the other half of that big round block connector as I can only assume it doe the rad fan and lights ect? I could run the mk3's loom for that could I not?

A mixture of tiredness and it being years since I played with one of these looms is making it hard for me to remember that round plug. On the early loom one similar connects the bay loom to the engine loom, but you must have that part as you have the throttle body ect plugged in. On the later loom that round plug is replaced by 3 smaller rectangle type plugs.

The cars rad and temp gauge sensor wiring is kept as is so if that round plug is for that you don't need it

You are right about the fuel pump wiring too, take the live from the 6n loom and connect it to the live wire for the cars fuel pump. you can leave the fuel sender earth and signal wire as is

Now I'm assuming these would be the 3 plugs? These are near the stat housing, thing is I have these on my loom with that big round connector, this is why I'm thinking that it does the lights and everything in that area?

In your first post, first picture, that box above the relays is a central locking module, not fitted on a polo till the 9N, So I think you might have a loom from an Ibiza?

Yeah it's the comfort control module from a 6n2, nice spot! Yeah the interior loom is from a 16v 6n2 but I'm in the process of rewiring that to suit. I thought they were the same until I read the wiring diagrams, but they aren't too dissimilar from each other.

I'm only in this situation as the scrappy I go to had a valver 6n so I thought why not get the loom, so I took the engine loom and a few other bits, then went back again to crack on taking the dash out to get the rest of the loom, but a lad had already cracked on with it doing the same conversion, so I left him to it as he got there first, and I went on patrol to find another car with a loom to suit and the closest match was this 6n2 so I took it out of there instead.

To cut a long story short I've made life more difficult than it needs to be, but looking at the diagrams it's not gonna be too much work to sort it out so I'm willing to give it a good go.

that fair enough, you can definably make this work.

i stand corrected, that round plug is in fact the front panel connector and isn't needed.

if you lay it all out, then start at the front panel plug, unwrap in until it reaches the engine connectors then basicly work back keeping only the wires that go to those plugs in that area. there will be a few shared earths and connections along the way, but as long as you keep the wire going to the engine connectors or ecu in one piece then it will be fine (ie chop off the part your removing only). there are alot of extra wires in the loom as the 6n2 had ABS etc as well as all the lights.

then once you have all those removed i would take out the loom from the car and do the same but remove the engine wiring, then lay them on top and wrap it all up. that's the way i would do it anyway.

also, are your sure that was from a 6n2? mine doesn't have that central convenience box above the relays? if it did i would change it for one with a receiver inside from an ibiza and have remote locking :)

You will need very few wires from the interior loom anyway. Just that for the immobiliser, a couple of ignition wires, live feed for the fuel pump and the signal for the rev counter.

If this was an early 6n loom I could of reeled off which number plug and pins you would need from the fuse box, but I haven't had much to do with the late looms when doing these conversions unfortunately

Yeah 100% from a 6n2, removed myself :), maybe it just controls central locking and if you don't have it then vw won't have put one in? In theory knowing vw you'll have the wiring for it so why not lol.

So I have begun with the 6n2 interior loom and removed all the tape

Then I removed all the fuses that I didn't need and depinned all the wires, traced them to their source and with the help of the wiring diagrams de pinned unnecessary ones. Still got some to go yet but it's looking a lot less scary now!

I have started comparing the plugs to the 6n's engine loom and swapping wires over from the 6n2 interior harness to where the 6n would have them. If it wasn't for the wiring diagrams I wouldn't have a clue what to do!

Will be starting on the 6n's harness next week hopefully.

Although now I've jumped in at the deep end it's a lot less scary than I imagined, it's a question of whether it will run though with all the modifying required!

Yeah man all the research I did beforehand was mostly reading your posts on wiring! Has anyone done the conversion with the late spec loom?

Seen one lad use a late spec loom to do it, can't think of his user name but he had a beige mk2 bready and had a build thread for it

Nice one! I'll see if I can find it

Cool cheers, how's yours coming along?

Still sat there haha. Got some mk1 Golf coilies fitted the other week. New tyres tomorrow and waiting for a mate to sort my loom out then done :) hopefully won't be long now (although I've been saying this for 2months)

Haha good lad! I managed to source a complete engine instead of just a head so got unreal amount of spares now :)
