I thought I would start a thread for the wifes Polo

these pics were taken by P/O but nothings changed bar a scratch on the drivers door which happened about 12 hours after ownership

apart from fixing door locks and having an issue with the ABS module all is well.

I've just spent £40 on the right gearbox oil for it as the clutch was done before I bought it and now it doesnt like to select 3rd when coming down the box.

update... changed the gearbox oil today

the fluid that came out it looked right and was clean..

so now I'm starting to wonder if I've bought myself a tin of problems...

so I've now discovered when coming from 4th or 5th if I release the clutch blip the throttle and then dip the clutch it goes in sweet..

so after some searching I've discovered its a common problem and its a sign the box is on its way out.

so I'm now looking for a gearbox but also thinking is it time to get oily and rebuild a box....

I've also wondered is it possible to fit a different box? say one from a 1.9tdi fabia or golf?

I've found plenty of threads but bar folk buying recon boxes I've not seen any answers

anyone wanting to buy a polo?

Best thing I've ever owned, fantastic on fuel, good to drive, £30 tax a year... No complaints

well I've bit the bullet... I'm just having a coffee break the gearbox is booked in for a rebuild..

Well I started stripping the box out around 12.30 today and by half 3 the box was sitting on a bench at the gearbox specialist in falkirk. Not bad for an afternoons work

I've pulled the abs module out as well as going to have a look and see if I can get a replacement while the gearbox is away getting rebuilt

There is two common faults with the ABS pump unit, first is the fusable link on top of the battery, the often fracture and this causes a voltage drop and this puts on the fail light, you need to remove it and check for any damage, the other is in this link http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=312683

I'm getting a front near side abs sensor fault code and also when I try to scan with vcds its telling me there's no signal from the abs module. Would any of the faults above cause this? I have checked the fuses on top of the battery but will remove them to double check them.

That's confusing! if your not getting a response from the ABS unit, yet it reports the front nearside sensor??? but that sounds more like the actual sensor or the wiring to it, the resistance of the sensor should be 1~1.3 K ohms

Ok that's the ABS not talking tothe engine ECU

This might be down to your VCDS connection, Is it a canbus compatable lead?

yes its a can compatable lead it happily reads my brothers 54 plate passat and reads my dads 08 golf

I've also got a vag/can scan hand held tool that will read can bus and it wont read the polo either.

My thoughts at the moment is to get a second hand controller with the same part number and try that and see if vcds or my scan tool will read it

its also been suggested to replace the abs sensor and then reset it and see if this cures it.

I'd start with checking the resistance from the ABS unit and see if the sensor is within the resistance range, if not replace/repair the sensor/wiring, then I'd check those resistance between pins 6 & 7 on the engine ECU 60~72 Ohms and do a continuity check from the Engine ECU to the ABS, ECU pin 7 to ABS pin 11 & pin 6 to pin 10

well the wee polo has been back on the road for 2 days and all is going well.

I forgot to take any pictures of the rebuild as was just grabbing time on it when I could between dealing with 2 sick kids
