My 1.0 Polo 6n sounds like a tractor, I reckon at some point there has been oil starvation or something as it has a small leak and if not watched carefully it does use a little bit of oil or maybe lose a bit of oil though I dont usually see any drips under her.

Are the tappets a bugger to replace on these little uns - I haven't done such a job before but I am always game for a laugh :)
