Radio light slightly on after ignition kill loud crack on speakers then mute

VW Beta Radio / CD player

Hi all,

I've had this problem for quite a while now where after I kill the ignition the radio orange backing light is still on but dim and if I leave the fuse in it will drain my battery virtually overnight. Also when i do put the fuse in for it at the fusebox the radio will play for around 5 - 10 sec the a loud cracking and popping sound from the speakers then the radio goes mute. Would it be a faulty radio, bad earth or faulty / damaged wiring? Any help would be great.

Thx in advance :)

Apologies for double post I can't delete one.
