It does it regardless of whether I'm in gear or not.

Hi have you checked lower ball joints and bushes as well as ensureing the calipers are nice and free both the pistons and sliders, especially if its ok brakin hard but you get a problem braking lightly, normally if the brake pedal pulses slightly when braking obviously wheels not locked its the rears if the steering wobbles as well its usually the fronts. One other problem I had with front brakes years ago when my car was on the brake rollers on the mot when you release the brake pedal you see the brake force reading decrease on one side it stayed the same then decreased slowly the other side worked normally it turned out to be the brake hose on that side (had delaminated internally acting as a one way valve stopping the brakefluid going back to the master cylinder) must admit it was many years ago cant remember any braking problems though car had ABS as well

Abs sensors don't necessarily show up. Only if they're faulty not dirty. Dirty pickup rings etc make it read funny and then brake funny. The rocking sounds like warped discs. When braking gentlying it feels like it'a braking harder sometimes than others? All within the space of each wheel rotation..?

Warped discs would be the first thing I'd check and while I was there clean sensor and pickup rings

All replaced.

Spoke to the guy who skimmed the fronts and he said check the rears which I'm going to do Saturday. Although he said it cant still be the fronts.

When i say its less prominent when braking hard, i think that the window of the worst part of the vibration is small so it probably goes past very quickly.

By rocking i mean that the car feels like its jolting forwards when braking at slower speeds.

Its a 2000 1.4TDI Polo 66k now.

As for the ABS how would i test this? The rear rings were new with the wheel bearing. I also replaced a rear sensor not long back. Ill double check sat.

Looked at the back and found run out on one side. Replaced both discs pads and a bearing hub to remove it. Still there.

My next step is tyre's, what do you think?

Tried unclipping a rear abs sensor from under the rear seat to disable it. No change.

Getting some winter tyres next week so ill see if that makes a difference.

After that I'm going to the guy who skimmed my discs

From what you've said I seem to be having the same problem albeit it's worse at higher speeds!

I've changed all bushes, steering rack and tie rods for brand new updated parts as well as all the brake and tyre checks you've done. Also put on a subframe but nothing has helped!

A mechanic suggested to me it might be the strut inserts that are loose but not had chance to check yet?!

I had some new tyres fitted which didnt make a difference.

That garage put it on the brake tester and said its the front as there is a bit of fluctuation.

Took it to the guy who skimmed the discs and said its normal for cars to have some fluctuation on the fronts as the suspension moves etc. He tried the back (new brakes) and found one of the rears causing a vibration in the pedal when braking hard.

I took the wheel off and checked it and found the bearing slightly loose (new bearing) tightened that up which took that away.

The vibration is better but still there.

I also cleaned the mating surface of the wheel where there was crap on.

At this point I'm going to check each corner with a dial indicator.

I now have it pulling to one side but i think thats the tyres.

I asked him many questions for which he answered a lot quite well. If i cant find it after the runout checks and cleaning the rest of the mating surfaces then I'm handing it to him lol.

My 9n has developed a similar problem in the last few weeks, vibrating under braking. I don't think it's the ABS as its more of a wobble than a judder. I'll need to whip the wheels off really and take a look but I'll be keeping an eye on this thread

Hi yes, it went for the mot a few weeks ago by the same guy and he said everything was fine. So must have been the rear bearing causing the runout. Still being loose so causing the runout still but leaving the disc with varying thickness. Now it must have worn off.

Did you check the runout? If the hub is out then the vibration will be back!
