Mk1 polo 1.4 bike carb conversion

Featured Replies

Welcome to the sale of my 1981 polo mk1.

It started life as a standard polo N 900cc and has since had full restoration. It has had a new wing passenger side and a NOS repair panel welded to in the driver side. The bumpers are custom made as is the exhaust. The car has also had a full respray in the original Porsche Malaga rot with a retrimmed interior as close to original as possible.

The car is lowered on coilovers front and rear and has a big break conversion up front using mk2 golf 16v discs and Vauxhall GSI calipers (stops like nobodies business).

The wheels are 14” golf snowflake wheels painted gloss black with continental tyres which tuck into the arches nicely.

The engine started life as a 900cc which was under-powered, it now features a 1.4 ABD engine from a golf mk3 but has been livened up with a polo GT cam. The head has been match ported to a custom manifold to utilise the Honda CBR600 bike carbs. I also kept the mk1 clutch and flywheel as they are lighter than the golf counter parts.

The engine is mated to a rare formel e 1.3 gearbox which is great off the line but also has a brilliant fuel economy gear for cruising. The ignition setup is all from a golf mk2 1.3 and the bike carbs are fuelled from a facet gold flow fuel pump.

The car weights just under 600kg and produces 90-100bhp so goes like STINK!!! and sounds amazing!

Inside the car there is a mountney steering wheel, golf gear knob to match with the retrimmed interior.

This car has had thousands spent on it and would be a great cruiser for any VW enthusiast.

Now for the not so good bits.

The rear arches have been fiberglassed by the previous owner – we decided to leave them as they seemed solid (just wanted buyer to be aware).

The engine is smokey, this is more than likey the valve stem seals although I’m not 100% sure. My plan was to strip the head to check it out and fit a thinner polo mk3 polo head gasket. In the process up the compression and get more power.

The paint work could do with a good mop and polish, I took the car off the road to finish the engine work and haven’t got round to it so it could do with some tlc to make it shine again.

Other bits

The car is still registered as a 900cc polo and it would be up to the owner to change this accordingly.

I will include the original bumpers, some left over Malaga rot paint and my small stash of new polo mk1 parts.

The original engine and gear box are also available if the new owner wants them.

I also have a good polo GT engine with all ancillaries which can be sold to the buyer should they require it.

The car has been off the road for almost 5 months therefore has no tax or test.
