Weber 32/34 DMTR carb conversion? Help

Featured Replies

hi, my current carb has a fault auto choke and it stead of fixing it i want to replace it with a more tunable efficient carb. However i need help getting the right carb for a slight performance on my 1ltr. I will not do an engine swap as my engine on has 19,000 miles on it. Can people help out as I'm not sure what carb is subtle and weather stuff for it will be custom.

Would this carb fit? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-JETTA-1272cc-1983-90-WEBER-32-34-DMTL-CARB-CARBURETTOR-REPLACES-PIERBURG-/201021565958?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2ecdd1ac06

Yeah, 32/34 dmtl is way too big and unsuitable for a 1litre.

You probably want a single choke Weber TLA (autochoke) or TLM (manualchoke). Both very 'subtle' as used on some Polos already.

Other more challenging options are 34ICH or 30DMTR or a DCD with small chokes.

If it's only done 19,000 it's hard to imagine what has gone wrong with the autochoke. Might just need some lubrication and checking the feed+return pipes are not clogged at all. When was the antifreeze last changed? It has rust-inhibitors which don't last 25+ years.

okay that really helpfully,

Okay thanks thats really helpful! Planing to fix the current carb aswell.

I just read on another page that it i use a 1.3 inlet manifold a weber 32 DMTR will fit? Is this rubbish?

It'll fit mechanically, but the airflow signal from a 1 litre is 30% less than a from a 1.3, which means you will get a horrible lean bog when the 25mm second venturi opens (like someone else treading on the brakes as you want to speed up). Also your low down torque with the 24mm primary will suffer and you will have to drive with higher revs to make the same progress: more noise, more wear, more fuel.

There are a few ways to mostly avoid the lean stumble (emulsion tubes, pump jet, secondary idle, float height), but getting the combinaton right is hard and they can all cause a rich bog instead. In the worst case at normal driving speeds around town.

sorry to reap information from this thread but what are the performance enhancements like running a 32/34 dmtl on a 1.3, or an ABD? as thats what i plan to have my hands on soon, will it sort the compression issue of having the bigger mouth to feed or is it not worth the hassle and should I turn to bike carbs instead?

I ask as the weber would fit a lot more for a retro bay

If you believe rolling road figures I went from 75PS =74bhp with a 22/26 Pierburg 2e3 to 73.6 with a 22/22 DMTR to 80.6 with a 24/25 DMTL

But I've made other changes (exhaust/intake/fuelpump) along the way.

(This is with a GK engine, 292 cam, 11:1 CR and Bosch Dignition. So you might not achieve that with another 1.3)

I reckon the 32/34 DMTL with 24/25 venturis is at the sweet spot for 1.4 ABD but variable venturis of bike carbs may give better driveability and economy and top end but will not look retro.

I was expecting to achieve more with a 25/26 DMTR but I've not got there yet. Might be another restriction, wrong jetting or rolling road measurement difficulties. I'm definitely using more fuel :D

Indeed a 32DMTR with 22/22 venturis should work if jetted appropriately.

Racing Hillman imps with 998 cc used the old Weber 28/36DCD with 22/23 venturis.

Something like

Primary

40/110/F30/230

Secondary

60/130/F30/200

might be a good starting point.

other people have used them and thats what i plan to do

i think it ought to cope with a less than 10% increase in capacity , worst case a few jets might need to be bought

Hopefully your right then, do you reckon much power can be made from the pierberg? as mine runs lovely and would seem a waste really...I'm crap with carbs if I'm honest but would like to up the power if I'm going though a conversion anyway...I could easily make a manifold for bike carbs but it could spoil the look of the bay, thing is setting up these webers looks much harder than setting up bike carbs and they cost a fortune too

Second hand Weber DMTL can be had relatively cheaply - judging by eBay completed listings. Repair kits aren't too bad. It's the ancillaries like adapter plate, accel cable attachment, choke cable, air filter adapter that will push up the price.

There's loads of info on jets for 1.3 and changing jets is easy with carb on car.

whats the difference with DMTL and DMTR, sorry for the questions and its probably obvious and second nature to you lol

what about this DMTL >>> http://www.dellorto.co.uk/merchandise/products_details.asp?PartNo=22670.916&CategoryID=3&PartsectionID=52

is it a straight bolt on part to my nz manifold? That price is very high but in all honesty with a full setup like that bike carbs would cost nearly the same i think...its setting the bugger up that scares me, I dont want it to run like crap obviously and I am by no means a carb wizard. I read through the weber carb thread and was baffled at first sight.

there is also an auto choke which i would prefer if performance and reliability are the same but i wouldnt know where to start with the choke, I've seen with manual choke people wire it under the headlight switches

try it with the pooburg , they're a nice carb when they work

i didnt get any power increases when i swapped over , i think all the moar power storys come from folk that replaced a totaly shagged poorburg and yeah its gona feel better

okay mate, yeah well mine has been fine so far and I cant say I've experienced the stuff everybody goes on about with the pooburg being crap. I've also heard horror stories with Webers but I guess the name is so big that its harder for the reputation to diminish. God knows then I might just settle power-wise when it comes to carb side of things, the bigger block, hi lift cam and different exhaust will probably satisfy but it seems a shame to leave part of the job out lol

Changing Pierburg jets is awkward and they arehard to get hold of (carburettor hospital)

DMTL has throttle quadrant on left of carb, DMTR on right looking at float hinge end which should be nearest front of car.

DMTL has an extra econojet that opens based on engine load for enrichment. This gives improved economy and better topend.

I'm sure I could see its operation on my vacuum gauge,

Yes the

Weber DMTL 32/34 Carburettor - VW Golf 1600cc Kit Part No - 22670.916

should fit, but needs different jets.

You could always try a Pierburg 2e2 from a Golf. In perfect tune they are a thing of joy. (search for bromyard)

Fastroadcars sold a DMTL for Polo now out of stock. But they do sell just the fitting kit for a DMTL

You can usuallly transfer the throttle quadrant from Pierburg. Or use the 9990249500 lever,

NZ is MPI injection?

I don't know whether you will need a different intake manifold to fit a carb.

Doesn't your Polo have the AAV engine in it just now? They are single point injection, not a carb. So you won't have experienced the issues associated with the pooburg carb. Unless you converted it?

Don't think it is guys, it is nz code but I'm positive I haven't got injectors as I changed plugs once and didn't see any plus saw the carb, unless it is a tb in which case I'm wrong about being carb but I'm positive it ain't an mpi

Unless it is a different kind of mpi set up I'm not familiar with, I can have a look tomorrow morning and look or maybe take a picture to show you

If it's nz then it is multipoint injection. Just above the HT leads on the inlet you should see 4 injectors, 1 in each port of the manifold.

I'm sure I've looked and I didn't have any, I know they should be just above the ports facing in towards the block but I'm sure I looked when I bought it and I didn't. If you say it is it must be though so I will have another look tomorrow, I was half inclined because of looking previously to buying an inlet manifold from a gt and welding bungs in the holes or something haha

Odd, is there a picture of your engine bay on here?

Do you still have the ECU under the scuttle tray?

There are crap ones on my thread with big pan filter in the way but I will try and get a picture in the morning, your probably right lol and I've never looked under the scuttle properly so wouldn't know I saw the heater motor thing but it may have been there and I just didn't see as I wasn't looking for one

Put it like to this, if it obviously mpi when I look tomorrow I will cry with embarrassment and go and die in a corner

As a quick test to make sure I'm not being a dunce I've been searching constantly for injectors on my model and have had no luck so far which makes me think I might not have gone full retard and just part retard
