I agree they make them out to be amazing, people fall in love with the brand or the cars and the residual value is good but I'm not convinced. The best cars I've ever had are old Merc's, couldn't fault them and always ran amazingly.

I've found that VWs after 97 are when they started to decline in reliability. People who moan about older VWs being "unreliable" are just highlighting how little they know about cars or how to maintain them. Sometimes you can just be unlucky, but you can't expect any car to remain reliable for eternity.

That said, my mum has a mk4 golf which has had niggles but its never broken down and left her stranded. My bro had a Lupo, which although was a horrendous car to drive, had nothing wrong with it, ever. In 3 years of ownership my mk2f needed an alternator, thats it.

But everyone waits till they see a 'low oil' warning light on the dash to check it. And I have heard of people taking their car back to the dealer when that happens to get them to top it up.

At the other end of the scale, the number of times I've heard of people seeing the low oil warning light, buying oil and filling the engine til it's spilling out of the fill hole is ridiculous

I can just imagine someone surrounded by several empty bottles of oil saying "How much does this thing need?!"

New record, 9 days without a mechanical failure of any sort!!

5 weeks without electrical failures!
