Insurance for a 17 year old?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and I'll be buying my first car soon and I've decided that it'll be a mk2f gt. I've done a few quotes on "confused.com" and there coming to around £3000-£4000 annually which is pretty expensive. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to get a cheaper means of insurance.

Thanks

  • What you were intending to do is called "Fronting" and as said it's fraud by misrepresenting and you'd find yourself uninsured and liable to have the car impounded !! Remember this is an open forum

First Welcome to the forum.

You could try contacting one of the forum sponsors in the sponsors section, and you might find putting one or more of your parents/relatives on the policy as named drivers will drop the price the other thing to consider is the "black-box" recorder, as this often reduces premiums by quite a bit, but can be restrictive if you need the car for work and work at antisocial times

Churchill's good as a black box insurer. I got £1.2k annual on my first car when I was 19, and they haven't cancelled my policy or even mentioned anything regarding my driving. Which is very surprising.

Get a 1.0 or a 1.3 non gt.. simple mate. It'll take a few years to go down as you're 17. Or just pay it, 3-4k on a car which is seen as "sporty" is reasonable.

You just have to bite the bullet for a few years of not having the car you want or one that has any inclination of being sporty.

A gti mk2 golf for me now I'm 21 and have 3 years ncb has just dipped under 1200.

Which insurance company is that with mate?

Yeah I'm thinking of going for a 1.0 as I done a few quotes and it is coming at around £2000 annually.

that was through confused and with carrot insurance, it was on a 1.0 breaddy

Insurance for young people just isn't getting any better is it? I'm glad I'm apparently older and wiser now so insurance is cheap :)

Anyway when I was younger I found putting a girl around your age on your policy helped out too. No idea why, but I was saving on average £100 or so when I was doing it.

I'd suggest like everyone else has, just get a 1.0 first for a couple of reasons. Being your first car you are more than likely going to smash it at some point. Happened to us all. Also the money you would have spent insuring the GT can be saved and spent on either converting the 1.0 or buying a GT when you get old enough to have a more sensible price for insurance.

Alright, quoted around and the best quote so far on a 1.0 is £2300 annually with sainsburys without a black box. Will do some more hunting around.

Remember a lot is to do with your area. I don't think the site sponsors can help with 1st time drivers.

When I started driving it was £1600 for a 1997 Polo 1.4CL, 2nd year was £900 and it's been going down ever since. 9 years later, I pay £300ish for a 1.8T. All that was with Elephant, give them a try too, admiral and bell are sister companies so it's worth checking everyone!

Older and wiser haha :P

When I attempted to learn to drive, quotes for a 1,4 6n were around £3500. When I actually could afford to learn to drive and passed at 21, a 1.4 6n was £1,047.

Your best bet would be to get a 1.0 for a year, get a years no claims and then hunt a GT.

I had my Polo for all of 5 months though before I picked up the Golf. My insurance on that (1.6 Mk2) will be about £1,000ish on generic insurance, but it's old enough that it qualifies for classic.

Edit; I tell a lie, it's £847 for the Golf on generic insurance.

I've done a load of hunting around and the best quote i've got on a 1.0 is £2300 anually with sainsburys with no black box. The only problem is that they're not offering a pay monthly option and I don't have £2300 lying around. The thing that made the biggest difference in price was the location, I put in the address where my Grandad lives and got £500 off. Gonna have to try and sort something out or will have to resort to another car :-(.

Insurance for young people is such a scam. I'm willing to bet if you had to claim they would still try and do everything they could to not pay out.

Please remember that it is illegal to insure a car at a different address if you don't live there. Remember we have insurers on our forums.

Alright well i've had to abort getting a mk2 as insurance is too high. I'm thinking of getting a 6n2 1.0, done a few quotes on one and it's around £180 per month which isn't bad, going to add some additional drivers and see if I can get it any lower but leaning towards the 6n2.

Get a 6n2 for a year, chalk up some NCB and save up for a good, clean Mk2f in that time!

That's the plan :good:

That was my logic with the 6n I had. Ended up making the change after just 5 months of being on the road though.

Get a classic beetle, they are cheap to insure for young folk.

I have a 6N2 With a black box. 17 and First Year was £1200!

Who's that with mate, how did you manage that? Cheapest i've found is £1900.

+1 was looking for my girlfriend, £900 a year!

Best tactic is to go on confused or comparethemarket and go through changing one factor at the time, without lying. So, for example, change where you'll keep the car - for me it's cheapest on the road rather than the drive, but for some people it's in a garage. 'Street away from home' can be a winner if it doesn't ask you to specify exactly where this street is. Whichever gets the cheapest quote is the one you do - so if you're quoted for the road, park it on the road.

Play with your annual mileage, within reason. Mine's 6k miles/year, which should be plenty for me this year, but my housemate found that he got the cheapest quote at 15k/year.

Try changing your voluntary excess. If the car's worth less than £500 set it at whatever you like because frankly it's not worth claiming whatever you do because it'll end up being too expensive.

Have a look at your occupation. Sometimes you can change it without lying which changes things. For example, 'Student' rather than 'Student Living Away' might be cheaper if you're at Uni, but 'Student Living at Home' might then be cheaper than 'Student' if you've not moved out.

Also, get 2 parents or friends with a good few years' NCB on there as named drivers. As long as they drive the car at least once in the year it's legit, so let them park it for you or something. Doesn't have to be someone who lives with you, so a family friend or similar willing to be named on your policy would be okay. As far as I can tell, two is the optimum - any more or less and it goes back up.

To be frank, my housemates and I have spent literally hours on comparison sites trying to understand, and we've come to the conclusion that there's no actual logic. Certain obvious factors like NCB/Experience/Engine size come into it usually, but most of the time it's fairly random. British Insurance is a mess.

Personally I'd never use a black box. I've heard too many horror stories of the box being used as an excuse by the company to throw charges at you left, right and centre, and I don't like the idea of them being able to track your every move.

Finally, look into Guevara insurance. They group their drivers into groups of 20-30 or so. Each person's premium goes into the group's 'pot'. If someone in the group has to claim, it's paid out of that pot, and at the end of that year, the group only have to pay enough to top up the pot to what it was at the start of the year. For example, if there's 20 in a group and the total claims in that year have been £1000, the following year each person only pays £50, plus the baseline admin fee which is £120, I think. If the pot gets emptied, you just pay the amount you paid in your first year, which is the most you'll ever pay. Premiums are usually lower than other insurance companies.

If you can get in a group with people you know and trust, it could potentially be a winner for you.

Good luck anyway. At 17, you're exactly the kind of person they love to hate, abuse and take advantage of.
