Insurance for a 17 year old?

Featured Replies

Alessandro hit the nail on the head. I did pretty much exactly what he's said with my last insurance (TT 225bhp @ 20) and it went from £2,100 to £1,300!! Would have been cheaper without my dad added on but he's always liked TTs so had to add him on.

  • I am 17 and had a quote of £1600 with a black box

  • What you were intending to do is called "Fronting" and as said it's fraud by misrepresenting and you'd find yourself uninsured and liable to have the car impounded !! Remember this is an open forum

As a laugh the best quote I've ever had that beats all logic was a jag xj8 4.0 v8 beast when I was 18 and got quoted 470 quid !

Consider being a named driver for a few years. Although you won't build up a no claims, you will save plenty of money. Possibly more than it would cost you to have your own insurance for a few years. Thing is convincing someone to let you on their insurance.

Bare in mind as well, that going through compare the market seems to slap a charge on the price. My quote on a 1.4 6n as a new driver at 21 was £1,400ish with Admiral on compare the market, but £1,043 direct from admiral's website.

That's with 2 named drivers.

Finally got a result today, on a 1.0 mk2f I done a quote as being a named driver with my sister as the main driver and I've got a quote of £1200 a year with no black box as well. Now to just sort the car out

Note if you do the above but you are the registered keeper and the main driver of the car then you are commiting insurance fraud and pretty much won't have insurance. If the car is your sisters and she uses it more than you then it is fine.

I thought if I give her the car to drive to the local shops here and there then it'll be fine, don't really want to have dodgy insurance as I'm bound to hit it as it's my first car. Might have to just sweat it out and pay the extra £800 a year.

Yep that's definitely what I don't want to be doing as that can cause huge consequences in the long run, thanks for the info guys.

It may be a fortune in the short term, but it's definitely better to have proper, valid insurance mate :)
