Hi all,

I'm currently driving a 06 plate Polo with the AWY engine (1.2, 6V), and as much as I love it (it's my first car and an absolute workhorse) I'm getting tired of it's atrocious lack of power, and as all my mates are getting more powerful cars as their insurance is cheaper it's getting even more irritating.

Because of this, and the fact I don't want to sell it, I've been trying to look into doing an engine swap for it, found an AYP 1.8 20VT engine with all the ancilliaries reasonably cheaply, and an 02A gearbox at a decent price too. So would those parts be compatible as I build a sleeper? or are there better pairings I should consider?

Also, how much would it cost me do you think? I can get the gearbox and engine for 800 odd quid, how easy would it be to do myself? I can probably do everything but the loom, or is it going to be harder that I anticipated?

Basically at a loose end here and can find precisely nothing of use online and any advice or guidance would be extremely helpful.

Remember, you'll have to notify the DVLA and any insurance companies too. Most won't touch engine conversion so that will limit you to a specialised car insurance i.e, like one of our sponsors. And if you're young i.e under 25 or have less then 1/2 years driving experience you will have trouble getting insured.

Way up the ideas and see what's best and the cheapest, I'm sure someone who knows conversion etc will be along to help out, also take a look at some of the project threads to get some ideas.

I've got a year and a half of NCB and I'm still on a black box at the moment so the earliest I'd consider it when I have at least 2 years, just want to get an idea of what I'm getting myself in for like

The AYP was fitted to the MK3 Ibiza and the engine mounting is different to that used in a Polo, however there were two 1.8T fitted as standard in your model, BBU & BJX so if you could get hold of one of those, all the mounts would be off the shelf items along with the wiring looms etc

would that all simply be plug and play then? So I'm guessing I'd need, gearbox, engine, manifolds, brakes, suspension, wider wheels, relocate the battery, turbo, intercooler, loom, instrument cluster, ECU.

Anything else?

If you got one of those engine codes then it would be pretty much plug n play. That list covers it all apart from exhaust system :)

Or just buy and run one of those cars as it will be cheaper than insuring a converted one
