So this happened yesterday.... It popped up on gumtree at 11am yesterday morning in London and by half 9 last night I was home with it.

Last guy has owned it 20+ years as sleag40 pointed out cant be 26years as advertised as its a 91 not an 89 but oh well still a GT

Its cosmetically in a sorry state, he said he hadn't washed the poor thing in nearly 10 years, just having it garaged all the time and coming out for MOTs. The Drivers side wing has been resprayed 15 years ago and has lacquer peel along the whole top edge so that will be replace/resprayed in time. Mechanically though its impeccable, anything it needed he bought including the entire cooling system 18 months ago. Its 99% original being a dodgey 90s tape deck the only thing changed out.

The only thing required to make this 100% mechanically is a nsf wheel bearing as it has a bit of a grumble.

This will not be replacing my Bready as my first love but it will be a daily driver with intentions on making it as close to original as possible with maybe some BBS RAs and minor lows other than that itll be bog standard.

Anyway here are some pics of last night on the way home and this morning before i washed it. Note the patch on the NSR roof that i rubbed up with a cloth to get through the grime.

And after a wash this morning, the foam started turning green and brown but the colour, although fairly faded the colour has come through. Time to spend my weekend polishing!

I've looked at the v5c and yes it is.. just looked back at the advert and it does say 89, but oh well the guy was about 65 so ill let him have that one.

Have a good poke under all the arch trims, as if these sit they like to collect moisture there and the front VW badge is annoying me...GTs should have black ones haha.

And everything is kosher on it the only rust is stone chips on the bonnet and chips on the lower doors, its completely solid!

I'd not feel bad at all, you got an honest GT which needs a bit of TLC. You could put under £1000 into that and make it loads better than some of the examples I've seen for that price.

I can believe it mate. A 250 mile round trip wouldn't even get me halfway through Devon. Don't ever see them in Cornwall. Shame really. I'd happily do miles for one if I could afford two cars. She looks pretty good though mate!

N/s/f bearing done this morning at work, 2x recon drive shafts being delivered and fitted Monday + New brakes all round. Then will be the perfect daily!

Update

Well... This turned into a mission car.

There is nothing on this mechanically apart from the engine that hasn't been changed by me since September apart from the 8 month old full cooling system done by the last owner.

The bearing noise turned out to be a knackered gearbox which I had rebuilt which cured the problem after the rest of the driveline was changed (Bearings driveshafts and brakes on the front, bearings brakes and even the stubs on the rear as they'd had it).

All front and rear suspension and bushes have been replaced with standard parts as I don't actually want to mod this at all, some of them were that bad I would actually query the quality of the MOT.

I've actually sorned in recently due to the brake master cylinder packing up and the cost of fuel due to the short ratio box and have gone back to using my breadvan for a month or so until it is exactly how I want it.

I've now had enough of the short ratio CEH box and have today bought an 8P box so I can save a little bit on my fuel costs and not have the engine revving so hard. The plan is also to stick the CEH box in my breadvan over the winter and make that better to drive.

So here's what I bought.

So the plan for this weekend or maybe evenings next week is to swap the boxes and have my GT back on the road for the winter

But the little £300 gem has been far from a gem!

There can't possibly be anymore issues! -.- lol

As I've done all the work apart from actually refurbing the gearbox, I still stand at less than £1500 for all the parts and including buying the car.

There's a few interior issues I want to resolve (split seams on the rear seat) which I can repair with my sewing machine :P And the odd cosmetics, new o/s/f wing, new bonnet and passenger door lock doesn't work on the key. Maybe if fundings allow buy the compound and heads to mop it but I may pay someone.

So I'd say Ill have it complete 100% mechanically and 99% cosmetically for less than £1700.

I have seen some pretty mad prices on GTs in the last year or so if I'm honest!

Quick update, will be the last for a while as there's no planned work for it until next year.

New master cylinder fitted this afternoon and now have brakes again :) gearbox was fitted this morning as I had a spare few hours, drives beautifully!! Dont know why they stuck that short ratio pile of shite in it if I'm honest. But is now taxed again and my little bready is taking shelter in the garage for the winter so I can do the 5 speed conversion, weber conversion and finish the interior.

Also had a trip to my local vw breakers yesterday and had them cannibalise the two mk3's they had sat there :P

Best thing I came back with was these :)

There's one near chelmsford sort of near me, they occasionally have mk2/3 in there but theres a mk3 coupe and bready there currently, as well as two very sorry looking mk2 breadys, the interior in the mk3 bready is mint! one even has a recent rebuilt aav lump in it Ill PM you mate
