Cutting Springs

Featured Replies

Hi guys I'm new on the forum.

I've looked thru tons of threads about cutting down springs, all i want is some advice from someones whos done it. Whats the maximum i can cut out of each coil front and back? And roughly how much did it drop?

Please dont comment if its about how unsafe it is 😂

Cheers

Locking this before it causes an argument. It is unsafe and illegal. Just buy springs...

  • hows this for pikey ....i wasnt intrested in lowering mine at all but then one coil snapped off the end one day , so i jacked it up and cut the matching amount off the other side lol can do it on the

  • I like that seveo 😂😂 maybe ill just wait for one to snap and then match it up! No worrys man, ill probably end up buying some. But bordom and arch gap can drive a man insaine 🙈

Done it myself. Just chopped one off the front spring. Did it inline with where the spring ended on the last spring.

But to be honest you would be better just buying lowered springs nowadays due to the price. Secondhand springs are normally no more then £20.

Yeah fair one i know they can be bought cheep, but i really dont want to spend anything on it 😂 Did you pull the springs out and cut them side by side or cut them in situe like an animal? Thanks

I'd not try and do it in situ. Even with the car jacked up there's still a preload in the spring. So think about what will happen if you cut a cool out.

Yeah I've done it before, you just compress the part of the spring that your not cutting with spring conpressors

can do it on the car as long as you compress the bit youre not removing

I would have given you 60mm springs if I knew you wanted them but they were taking up space and I threw them away about a month ago [emoji20]

Springs are sooo cheap if you look about on German ebay or our ebay anyway, I would imagine it's a lot less hassle too but each to their own

I see. I had a horrible vision of it being done whilst preloaded. If you've done it before you should know what you're doing

My mate cut 3 coils of all round was ok but abit pointless when proper springs are cheap

Also when you take it for test and the tester is looking for it. Instant MOT failure for a dangerous vehicle. I know people have passed test with cut springs but if you go by the book it's a failure. Police can even stop you on the road for it and have the vehicle removed if they're feeling that way inclined. And if they're really in a bad mood call vosa to your vehicle and have them inspect it.

This will need to be declared on your insurance which you can't do as they dont except "cut springs" as a modification so insurance will also be void and will be done for no insurance :)

Just spend the money and buy cheap springs

Haha all springs are cut from factory, how can anyone check that on the roadside? Only a fail if thier not seating correctly or too loose when the wheels jacked up. Still pointless though I wouldn't cut mine.

Because the end is unpainted, rusted or cut at an angle. The car doesn't sit at the height specified. Really really easy to check roadside mate. And they will seize the car or have vosa check it if they're unsure. Also if it's measured lowered than standard without it being declared they will seize your car straight away and do you for invalid insurance and driving an unsafe vehicle on the road.

and also even if they aren't loose, if they have been visibly alterered it's instantly a fail.
