Hi all!

I put a deposit down on a red T-reg red 6N today with 96k on the clock - collecting tomorrow. I think it's a 6N1 as the interior looks like the mk3 and very different to the mk4, so am I right in saying it's NOT a 6N2?

Very little in the way of invoices but service book stamped up to 70k. New front tyres and relatively new entire exhaust system.

A few niggles to sort but otherwise drove and braked very nicely. No rot and pretty good bodywork bar a dent in the rear valance/lower bumper, scratches around drivers door and boot lock, and a long scratch on the passenger door below the window.

Niggles...

1. Airbag light on
2. Drivers door lock 'does not work'
3. Broken door lock button/pull on top of door card
4. Central locking not functioning.
5. Cambelt ought to be changed & oil and filter change - will do myself ASAP.
6. No floor mats
7. Dent in rear lower bumper and long scratch on passenger door.
8. Stereo pants

Plan of action...

1) Owner said he was advised to remove a sensor below the passenger seat, clean up connections and replace... is there a sensor under the passenger seat? If it's not likely to be this, what else could I try? Have I been fed some rubbish about a more serious fault perhaps?

2) Not sure why it doesn't work. Will investigate. Does this sound like something one of those 5 piece door lock repair kits on ebay for less than a fiver would fix?

3) Have purchased a pair of new door lock pulls/buttons for the top of the door cards. Will fit when they arrive, along with my floor mats with red piping! :)

4) I've read about the vacuum system. Could be wrong but I think the pump is not operating. Will unplug and clean contacts and re-plug. Will also try to operate central locking by blowing down the tube/with a bike pump. If hoses are split that'll be cheaper and easier. Is there a good pattern part pump available if it is that thats broken?

6) Ordered new mats with red piping. Will fit when they arrive!

7) Might try to pop out dent in due course... not sure what to do about the long scratch - looks as though it's had a key run along the door and been repaired averagely.

8) Sony DSX-S200 headunit to be fitted when it arrives. Has a clever little tray for an iPod behind the fascia. Got an assortment of speakers at home too - will I need adapter rings for the (probably standard?) round JBL speakers and component speakers I have obtained?

Most importantly - to scan for fault code for the airbag light - I have a KKL FT232RL USB to OBD2 cable that I use with my Triumph Daytona 675. Can I use this with the Polo? I'm confused about the difference between CANBUS, OBD2, and VagCom.

In answer to the airbag question, most small cars of the same era that i have owned had the airbag connection underneath the passenger seat or under the carpet beneath the passenger seat so worth a quick look. Although I never had a polo 6n.

Sounds like a 6n1 if it has an airbag and also has a lower rear valance which has a dent in. This is a common sight on 6n polo's but the 6n2 has a one piece plastic bumper and is more rounded.

I picked the car up this morning and have done some fiddling. Turns out the ciggy lighter that he said had power but didn't glow actually had no power, and the shitty old aftermarket radio too.

I could blow/suck the central locking tube and get the petrol flap to lock and unlock. I hadn't heard the pump come on so I unplugged it, stripped it down completely, found very little untoward, and out it back together. Central locking still didn't work. I'd read online that the fuse was shared with electric windows - and mine work - so I ignored that. Flicking through the manual though I found the fuse diagram and noticed the central locking, ciggy lighter and radio were on the same fuse. Low and behold, working fuse swapped in and it all works!

I've ordered a new door lock button, floor mats, headunit, cigarette lighter USB plug, and door lock repair kit. Hopefully that will all arrive in the next few days and I can get to work trying to get a decent headunit in, and the drivers door lock working. If the door lock repair kit works i'll still have the same key, and the locking will all be working properly having cost me the grand total of £4!

Just a full service, including cambelt, to do, and paint/dents to perhaps tidy - after the door lock is fixed, lock button fitted, and headunit in.

Just the airbag light to sort out now... Not sure where to begin. My OBD2 cable definitely is no use. Anyone local got VAGCOM that I can plug in to?

Oh, and I could do with a spare key... any recommendations for someone cheap that can programme the new key to match mine?

Updated headunit fitted and all working great. Had a VW to Kenwood wiring harness in the car already, and the second hand Sony headunit had had the connection block cut off the other end, so I cut the Kenwood end off (and added bullets to use again in the future if required) and looking at wiring diagrams online joined the two ends together. It's a superb headunit - the iPod control works very well - unlike the Alpine with the little LCD screen I had in a previous car which wouldn't recognise the (similar age) iPod at all. Well chuffed for the £26 I paid via eBay

Drivers door handle removed - sadly the body holding the mechanism utterly mashed so removed the passengers side (and broke the paddle - doh!) and rebuilt it with the rebuild kit (very fiddly!) and fitted to the drivers door (fits ever so slightly differently - can see the dirt outline now - will polish off!). Drivers door lock working great now. Ordered a passenger door handle online and another rebuild kit - will build a new passenger handle (with my lock barrel to keep the one key) and fit it when they both arrive.

Noticed (oddly doing a google for something else!) that the heater controls should be lit. Mine aren't. Took the lower half of the centre console dash apart (finding cracked plastic bolt holes and clips galore - plastic very soft and crumbly it seems now - all glued back together with epoxy) and replaced the bulb. Working again but can't see if it's all lit nicely - should be though - will have to check in the dark tonight.

Griffin Powerjolt Micro ciggy usb charger arrived, fits flush with the dash - very nice - and works now i've replaced the central locking, stereo and ciggy lighter fuse. New carpets with red piping turned up today too, and the interior is looking a lot smarter now.

Bits to do still

Wash, clay, polish and wax tomorrow - can see how well the paint comes up

Major hoover out - including vents!

Build new passenger door handle with old barrel when parts arrive

Fit some better speakers - have a pair of new JBL component speakers in a box at my parents doing nothing

Try to diagnose airbag light vault via my OBD2 cable for my Triumph Daytona 675 - think the chipset is capable of working with Ross-Techs free version of the software.

Get a cheap spare key somehow

Figure out why water is collecting on the top of the engine subframe (??)

Put VW dust caps on when they arrive

Cambelt + full service

Eventually possibly maybe

Tidy up long scratch on passenger door

Push out dent in N/S corner of front and rear bumper

Tweeter grills poking up near the windscreen - more broken clips - bugging me.
