So, what stuff have you got given to do, that makes you think the people you work for trust that you're good at your job?

This month, they sent me to sell noodles to the Chinese

When I have completed 2 years training, go on track doing normal maintenance and platform gauging etc for about 6 months.

Then I cross the man who is responsible for all of wessex route alone for the gauging and inspection for derailment hazards on switches. And passed a switch with a 500mm+ chunk out of the tip and he passed it. It's an automatic fail over 200mm and he's been doing these inspections for roughly 10 years. That was the first one I've seen take place.

He later asked if I would like to be "mentored by him to gain my competency" seen as I had done the course a year before. I think he actually meant the other way round [emoji14]

Selling noodles to Chinese people seems a task I wouldn't want to even attempt haha

I get left alone and no body checks or questions my work. That makes me think they trust me

I work for a service company in the Oil & Gas business and in the past I've had clients request that I do a specific job. Usually it is just a case of whoever is available, so that has made me feel pretty good about myself before.

I had that in my old job, it actualy meant no one else on site understood what I did, and even if they did, they didn't want to do it.

My last position was like that before I took the position I have now (same company though). At least if no one else can do your job you're pretty much safe when it comes to the threat of pay offs.

The Job I have now is the only one I've had pride in and been interested. I feel like a nerd just saying I like the railway. But I do.

Working a close at Domino's means one person from each role stays after we've shut to help prep the store for the next day - clean the makeline, wash tubs, mop, take out bins, etc etc. But even though we have 15+ drivers, I get scheduled to do the close 2-3 days a week.

Also for each close I do, I also get a 9" pizza with my choice of toppings, completely free of charge.

After Dora got crashed into I ended up using it for a few days before I bought the Nissan. Certainly got a fair share of compliments, both for the car and for my unusually quick delivery times. Of course it only gets about 20mpg so didn't want to make it a regular thing

Thing that makes me feel trusted is when I am asked to start a new development project off.

Plus, it gets my coding/creative juices flowing, which is ace.

The Job I have now is the only one I've had pride in and been interested. I feel like a nerd just saying I like the railway. But I do.

John, seriously, I love railway too. I honestly don't know why. I think it is an innate property of guys to love mechanical stuff, so yeah, railways are cool

But I also like computers, and my job. I enjoy what I do.

I never liked the railway till I got the apprenticeship and learned the ins and outs of everything lol, As you say i think its that innate property of loving mechanics, I worked in a service and MOT garage on my first job though and hated it so much...mainly because I knew nothing at the time and by time I did know a thing or two I was ignored

Computers are like another dimension for me. Same for anything electric although I'm wetting my toes and its a nice feeling to fix a fault, Maybe one day I will build myself a gaming PC...I've said that for about 8 years now though :P

I have always been one that likes computers and cars, and if I like something, I enjoy learning about and working with it. I'm not so good with car electrics, but my dad was a sparky on planes when I was younger, so I am going to learn some stuff from him. I get the basics...

Pictures do not do any justice to how rusty this car is, it's broke it's back and the rear leaf springs have come through the floor, the roof has also started to split where it's rusting.

I've told him to go and buy the good one on ebay for 15k cause it'll he cheaper but he's adamant he wants to save this one. A fool and his money are soon parted.

It's fucked, I've tried telling him this multiple times. I told him I'm happy to take his money but it's just not worth restoring... he is still adamant that he wants me to weld it up. He's even offered to pay me weekly for work done so I'm not having to hold out till it's finished for a pay day from it so I've kinda run out of excuses not to do it.

Sounds pretty similar to me and my mate at uni. It always seemed that there was only a handful of people that liked coding...

Either way, I have always liked it, I seem to be good at it, and it pays well too. Seem to be getting extra work on top of my day job too! [emoji106] [emoji108]

Fair play to you. I decided I'd rather stack shelves than stare at a screen for a living. To be fair though, it worked out ok.... even if I am staring at a screen for a living at midnight.

In another life, it's a shame my mate never had the dream I did or we'd probably have a decent little software company on the go about now. We were pretty much two dipolar halves of the same brain.

My company atm are in talks of making a new S+C inspection team at waterloo (the whole layout is changing) they need a couple track technicians, two signalling and transmission technicians and some permanent way operatives. Me and my colleague who I trained with for nearly 3 years have pretty much been told it's ours if we want it (the track tech jobs) and they are paying overtime contracts as well on a team leader grade which is 28g basic and that's in the first year...it increases a min 3% every year unless your a knobhead lol

I've been on crap money for 3 years doing this. 8500 1st year but all expenses and accommodation paid, 12450 2nd and 14750 now, it's a role clarity contract and I'm limited to 30 hrs overtime a month so I can only get an extra 225. Going from that to the next pay which will be in may is going to be crazy for me.

I would like to think I'm trusted enough for the manager of clapham to want me and my mate responsible for all the renewals of one of the most major stations but maybe I was just in the right place at the right time and tbh I don't know if I want all that responsibility. I just keep telling myself I'm like that one guy that goes all the way through training mucking about and somehow comes out alright. A lot of us are saying that to ourselves.

There's my whole story lol not sure that anyone cares but I'm buzzing a bit to almost be finished after writing 26 2500 word reports and 9 3-5000 word nvq's plus tonnes of courses to gain competencies.
