Hi all,

I drive a 6n2 Polo with no non factory mods etc.

I purchased myself a dash cam before christmas and due to this that and the other I haven't had chance to wire it in properly and have just been plugging and unplugging it from the 12v socket however I recently bought all the components to wire it in properly myself. My main question is where would be best for sourcing an ignition live that; a) will handle the small extra load with some headroom to spare & b) Is relatively easy to get to (I can remove bits of the dash with relative ease but once it comes to the support frames for it I'm stuck!).
The other thing I'd require would be a ground point as after having my head under the dash for about an hour today I could see neither ground nor switched live!!!

I have mounted 4 dashcams in my two 6N polos.

I wanted it also a propper way than out of the power socket.

In 6N1 (4pin) and 6N2 (10pin) you have a connector near the a-pillar on the driver side to connect the basic-wireloom with the wireloom going up to the insidelight under the roof. It depents what your car came with from factory. If you have the electrical sunroof, the electrical rainsensor with the automatic dim-rearviermirror or an caralarm the setup of the pins in that connector are different. But even with none of that you will have the insidelight under the roof. That means it gets plus (fused), earth/ground and (i only know that 100% in 6N1 polos) ignition to that connector.

These capabilities you can perfectly use for what you are planing to do. Don't forget your own fuses.

When you have found this connector you can make a picture and i tell you which wire has which capability.

Hi Christian,

I am in a right hand drive vehicle being in the UK so would I look on the left or right hand side of the car for the wires you mention?

I only have the light (No auto wipers, mirror dimmer or alarm)

It will be next week before I get chance to pull any panels off now!

Have a look behind the interior light, you might find two unused connectors a 4 pin & 6 pin, if there is, you want the 6 pin one, pin 1 (Red/Blue wire ) 12v ignition ON supply from fuse # 26 & pin 2 (Brown wire) Ground

Yeah take out the light and look in which direction the wireloom goes. Then you know on which side it is.

Haha yeah i am on CP's forum since 2003, i do know that you drive a RHD polo and that you are in the UK.

Some things are absolutely mirrored, some are the same as in the LHD polo.

Here i believe it is mirrored too, most of the electric is mirrored as in a LHD Polo.

I've had a look behind the light and can't find any spare connectors. The wire goes drivers side so I'll have a look down there tomorrow if I get chance!
Is there any other likely places to get the required if I can't get to the afore mentioned connectors?

There are plenty of "Ign ON" supplies, look for any Black/Yellow wire +12v with the ignition ON or Brown/Red wire on the ignition switch/radio/speedo +12v whenever the key is in the ignition

Would it be easy enough to splice into one of these wires as it exits the bottom of the steering column?

Yes either at the ignition switch plug or on the back of the fusebox/relay panel, if the current draw isn't that high you could have it on a battery live supply, that way if someone crashes into you while its parked you would get it recorded :)

Ah fair enough. Out with the snips and crimps tomorrow then!

It has a "Parked mode" that turns it on on it's internal battery if it picks up g force so that isn't an issue!
