So i picked up this gem of a friend before he goes on his travels, cost me peanuts!

I have been looking to start/practice on a new car for a while and thought this will be just the thing before i undertake my Mk1. She will have the 1.4 16v AFH engine after I have taken her apart to see if there are any problems to attend to. Don't want to bore you with a big intro so lets get to it!!.

Spec & Plans

Nevada beige (sexiest color)

1.4 16v AFH lump - Wuuuuuuuuuuut

Coilovers

VWII brakes up front - Serviced calipers - braided hoses - vented discs

Drums up back - All new parts

New brake & Fuel lines

New Underseal - insulation - carpets

Rear arches cut out - replaced with cut to size mk2 Golf arches

So basically a full restoration.

I just want to say that i'm not a mechanic or any type of engineer, my main aim for this thread is to help show and encourage other amateurs that it can be done! especially with the information on this build thread!

Then picked up by the work horse

Managed to get everything i need for the conversion plus some spares!

Next is to get her on axel stands then strip down, remove underseal.

Nice, I'll be watching this :)

So during the summer I got Polly up on the axel stands and started to disassemble everything, searching for any rot.

Found a few rusty places, so....

Next port of call was to strip back the inner wings, then apply new seam sealant & underseal

Master cylinder and steering rack got some love

Yes the bracket for the steering arms is on the wrong way around! only took me a month to realize!

Then i done my first ever brake line! best to start on the shortest one . which took 3 goes but got there in the end!

Happy with the results :)

Next i attacked the belly, took me 4 weekends to strip back that underseal! and unfortunately i forgot to take pictures, its not hard to picture though.

Moving on from that it was time to check out the rear arches and look what i found....

Did you just cut out the rot and put a plastic type cover in place?

Wizard, I cut all the rot out, sanded back everything else, replaced with sheet metal, can't remember how thick but I can check if you like?

Was a bugger getting the shape right.

Oh just to say I'm new to welding!...I spent a weekend practising before I made the panel.

Any new welders out there, practise first! 🙂
