This is a follow on from part of the what grinds your gears regarding prices of old polos

In my eyes there are two things that have lead to a £300 mk2 being worth £700.

The first started a good few years back with ths recession and with high fuel prices and people started looking for cheap run abouts that were good with fuel and so the prices crept up. At that time a cl was abiut £400 and a GT about £700

Second is with old vws being recognised as cool and the whole dub movement where people want to buy in. It happenes the the mk2 and 2f are old enough to be seen as classic but common enough to be found.

A similar thing may happen with the 6n and mk3 golf in a few years time.

Scene tax does exist but the phrase gets thrown about to often and usually at items priced at the going rate, being old doesnt always make something cheap,

on the othwr hand as shown in the other thread some dogs of cars are being talked up or bug issues hidden to pass them on at a high price

Whats your thoughts?

I personally have noticed quite a few shitboxes of MK2f Polo's on eBay and Gumtree going for close to £1k. All non GT or G40.

I assume that people recognise they are somewhat desirable cars, especially for young drivers with the cheap insurance, readily available parts and how easy they are to work on. Plus, there is the Dub scene which increases their desirability.

I guess what will be will be. Parts on eBay are advertised for way more than their real value, and they don't seem to come down in price when they don't sell. I assume these are people breaking cars for the extra cash on the side.

We're going to get the best deals and the best cars from people on the forums. And even then, we need to be diligent...

I noticed the rise in price from when I passed my test till I finally owned one. Suddenly prices had doubled in what didn't seem long at all so I thought...better get one quick.

I don't think there is much reason for the price to go up but even since I have had mine the prices are rising further

Like I said in the other post. My best bet would be that one guy puts a mk2f up for 1500, someone else sees it and says ah I'll put mine just under that etc and then there is a roll on effect until before you know 90 percent are priced high and people think it's normal

Other thing is the price of scrap was high for a good few years. To some people, if it needs mending, it's just a lump of metal. You can get £100 for it as scrap, or you can get it mended, MOT'd and hope for £500 - what're you going to do?

I've noticed since the price of scrap metal has plummeted over the last few months the price of old cars in general has gone down with it. But the mk2 and mk2f prices have stayed high. But here is the thing, are they selling? I've seen a few that are relatively cheap hang about for a while. As a scene we could make these cars nice and cheap providing we keep everything amongst ourselves. But it seems young kids have snapped up all the cheap cars, slapped on a TA technix kit and alloys and try and sell the car on for hundreds more than it actually owes them. Still plenty bargains to be had outside of the 'scene' though.

Yeah that is the question, the couple overpriced polo's on ebay aren't selling. I've been eyeing the mk2 bready that was 2k and it's now 1.7k. Does look immaculate but it ain't hard to polish one up. The genuine van hasn't sold either.

I hear one or two go for a high price but they must have gotten lucky! If people can get more money outside of the 'scene' then I'm sure they will. I would rather choose the buyer of mine. Someone I can trust looks after them, not going to be a first car for someone and definitley not anyone on facebook! I would like my car to be looked after even if it's no longer actually mine

Plain originality is what I'm keeping mine like, there not race cars there great small reliable cheap to insure motors.

Well I have been looking at buying a 3rd mk2f but not at £1500 , I can get a good 6n1 for £400-500 and quite like that model.

Not for me my first polo ever was is my boulevard coupe I purchased last April for 300 with 2 owners full vw history sitting on 49000 but now on 51799. Then bought the same year make an model breadvan 4 180 off ebay in same colour black, I think they were the last of the good old classics that don't need laptops wen go wrong lol

Judging by the 2nd image, the seller has taken pictures of the car with a phone, and then taken pictures of the pictures on the phone.
